A memo leaked today to ABC News, which was circulated to the Martha Coakley campaign and national Democrats in December, outlines some of the problems that Coakley -- then with a 51%-32% lead over Scott Brown -- might face come Election Day. Namely, conservative independents who don't like President Obama.

The memo says Coakley has a "strength of support," but warns that independent voters "look pretty conservative, and the national political context is not helping us much."

It was written by Daniel R. Gotoff of Lake Research Partners after conducting an internal poll and reportedly circulated all the way to the White House.

"Obama, whose job performance is already just barely net positive, is rated solidly negatively by a majority of independents," Gotoff wrote.

"Over the next weeks, our task is to consolidate Democrats and break even among independents. We do pretty well at that right now, but there are about a quarter of Democrats who aren't yet voting for us. And while we have a marginal lead among independents, they will be a battleground throughout this race," the memo reads.

Obviously the best way to consolidate your standing among independents is to sneer at the idea of campaigning in the cold outside Fenway Park and meeting some of those independents.

Coakley, the DSCC, Rahm, and yes, Obama—they ALL own this debacle.

Patience. Demographic shifts (increases in minority population) are going to wipe out the voting power of inbreds.

Repulitard days are numbered. Granted it may take a couple decades....

They will be writing books for years about the democratic party's ability to take total victory and, in just a few short months, let it turn into total decimation by people who are angry about who knows what. Everyone of them seems to have a different reason for their fear and anger. (Fear of the black man, anyone?)

Well, then, you'd better start some of that loaves and fishes stuff with the vote counts, because right now it isn't looking too good.

Ok. So why didn't Coakley campaign harder if this was all a known known not an known unknown or unknown unknown?

Cuz she and her campaign staff are idiots. Is it asking too much for a Democratic candidate in Mass not to denigrate campaigning at Fenway Park and to have a clue who Curt Schilling is? (Jeez, it was a softball question. The radio guy pointed out that Schilling was supporting Brown. All she had to do was point out that Schilling was a Bosox legend but that he had always supported Republicans and was one of George W's biggest supporters, that she admired his baseball skills but not his political judgment. Would that have been too hard?)

Hmm.,.I'm sorry a nice guy like you is not in politics. It doesn't work that way.

By the way, I'm willing to believe what Coakley is saying, until I see the evidence otherwise.

Not a guy and not all that nice. Coakley and a few others are saying that the polls are wrong and that they are going to win. So why engage in this bickering that losing teams usually engage in?

I'm also pretty enraged at the finger pointing that goes on and not enough solution finding and team building. And I'm not just talking about "The Dems" either.
