Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC), who famously declared last year that the health care debate could be President Obama's "Waterloo," and that beating Obama on the issue would "break him," is taking some credit for the Republican victory in the Massachusetts Senate race, The Hill reports.
"I'm not looking for vindication but I do believe that was a call to arms early in this race," DeMint said. "I was one of the first who was willing to take the president on directly on an agenda that I thought was out of control. So I certainly don't regret saying it."
DeMint made it clear that he doesn't want to break Obama personally. "I wanted to break his momentum," DeMint explained. And he also had a warning for the Democrats: "If the president and the Democrats don't get the message from Massachusetts, it will be their Waterloo."

You know, I appreciate that TPM doesn't want to be seen as beholden to the WH or the Democrats in general, and should in fact be critical in its reporting. On the other hand, this putrid post by Eric is nothing but stenography for one of the most notoriously unhinged right-wingers in the Senate.
Get a grip TPM. Some slither of editorial judgement would be appreciated.

So true. And the disgusting thing is that all of our comments re: TPM go ignored. None of the reporters seem to care one whit about the comments we make. It has gotten to the point of extreme arrogance even when commenters have tried to educate them on issues. Such has how to interpret a poll. There is no excuse for the TPM reporters to try to improve. They honestly don't make any effort as is apparent. How TPM has plummeted in quality over the past few years. Sadly, even a comment like this will go ignored by their reporters. They will continue to take Republican talking points and report them as news and amazingly get paid for it not by the RNC.

If they don't pass the damn bill now, they will have to ask for permission from the Repubs to pass anything in the future. If for no other reason, do it to wipe the smile off this idiot's face and break the HCR=Waterloo meme.

,i>"If the president and the Democrats don't get the message from Massachusetts, it will be their Waterloo."
Well, on this I have to agree. Only DeMint and I have different desired outcomes. If the President and the Democrats don't start fighting for Americans, and make their case better, it WILL be their Waterloo. That was the message of Massachusetts: things are fucked up, and we're sending in outsiders, because you people in DC can't do anything right. That's the message of MA.
But sadly, I don't think the Democratic "It is mathematically impossible to pass legislation" Party really cares.

"We're sending in outsiders?" Huh? How does sending someone to the Senate who ran on the standard of stopping the health care reform constitute an improvement, especially when that replacement is of the party that caused this problem in the first place? Republicans had years in the majority and they chose to do nothing. They had almost 8 years with control of both ends of Pennsylvania Ave, and again they were AWOL, so why would anyone think that sending one of them there would be a positive solution for the country? What we have here is a case of biting off their noses to spite their faces. Too bad the rest of us have to suffer as a result.

I do not understand why would DeMint want to break Obama's momentum . . . The Republicans are getting everything they ask for . . .

The WH needs to start playing smart. Look at FDR. He always had a smile on his face, but wielded a stiletto in his hand.
Carve this damned bill up and pass popular provisions like the ban on denial of healthcare for pre-existing conditions.
And take note of any Republican or conserva-Dem who refuses to vote for such a bill.
Also, pass something that the Republicans can't oppose - like a reduction in the payroll tax.
And then take credit for it.

Now that makes sense. And get it done quick and start spending hours of debate on how the dems are fixing or trying to fix the economy and job situation and the repukes are just trying to block everything.
When will they wake up?
