Dems To Scrap Conference Committee For Health Care Bill, Amend The Senate Bill In The House
House and Senate Democrats have agreed to bypass the conference committee process for the health care bill, in order to circumvent additional Republican delaying tactics. Instead, the House of Representatives will pass agreed-upon amendments to the Senate version, and then send the bill back to the Senate for a final vote.

Harold Ford Considering Senate Primary Bid Against Gillibrand
The New York Times reports that former Rep. Harold Ford Jr. (D-TN), who ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. Senate from Tennessee in 2006, is considering primary challenge this year against appointed Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY). The Times says: "Mr. Ford, 39, who moved to New York three years ago, has told friends that he will decide whether to run in the next 45 days. The discussions between Mr. Ford and top Democratic donors reflect the dissatisfaction of some prominent party members with Ms. Gillibrand, who has yet to win over key constituencies, especially in New York City."

South Carolina Republicans Rally To Graham's Defense, Blast His Detractors
Roll Call reports that a group of former GOP county chairmen in Lexington County, South Carolina, have written a letter lambasting the county party's recent censure of Sen. Lindsey Graham, and attacking the process that they say is dividing the party: "On the e-mail notice that went out before the meeting, there was no mention that any resolutions would be considered, much less a resolution to censure our senior United States Senator. When the time came for a decision about whether a quorum existed or whether the motion should be postponed until February, the demands of a vocal minority won. For something as serious as a censure resolution, the process should have been above reproach."

Pelosi Faces First Election Without Bush
The Hill says that Speaker Nancy Pelosi and House Democrats face a new challenge in 2010, Pelosi's first election without George W. Bush in the White House: "Like professional athletes and protagonists in Hollywood blockbusters, politicians are judged against their adversaries. Bush was Pelosi's Darth Vader, and she was his. Now she and other leading House Democrats face a decision about how much to emphasize what they have done while controlling Congress and the White House, how much to contrast this with their former bogeyman, Bush, and how much to go after other high-profile conservatives such as Rush Limbaugh and Sarah Palin."

Jenny Sanford's Book Gets Early Release Date
South Carolina First Lady Jenny Sanford's upcoming book, Staying True, has been fast-tracked for a February 5 release date, ahead of the originally planned publication in April. Jenny Sanford got the book deal this past September, and in December filed for divorce from her husband Gov. Mark Sanford (R), as a result of his infidelity.

Ford will be perceived as a carpetbagger. Dems need to rally behind Gillibrand.

In NY?

Who isn't?

That's like Arnie not being a native Californian.

"Who isn't?"

Paterson, Schumer, Nadler, Spitzer... Who is, besides Hillary Clinton (and Ford is no Hillary)?

And add, of course, Gillibrand to that long list of non-carpetbaggers. If anything, New York exports carpetbaggers to get other states seats in Congress (and Wall Street buys off the rest).

That is, Robert Kennedy is one of the "who besides Hillary...".

Also, Michael Bloomberg is not a native of New York, either.

Plus he's even more conservative than Gillibrand -- not exactly what New Yorkers are looking for.

Ford is no real progressive and I see him as a doubtful winner in NY.

Why can't get a more liberal vote in NY?

Gillibrand is kind of lame, too.

I accept that red states will give us Blue dog types, but blue states should give us true blue liberals.

You're overlooking that while New York City may be pretty solidly blue, the rest of the state is more conservative. Remember George Pataki? Alfonse D'Amato? And Republicans can win even in New York City, as did Rudy Giuliani.

New York is no lock for Democrats, any more than New Jersey is.

What New Yorkers really want right now is a Blue Dog who went on to work for Wall Street after losing an election in the South, has lived in the state for 3 years and is even more conservative than Gillibrand.

45 days! So much suspense... I'm not sure his friends and his mom can wait that long.

Harold Ford has never advocated anything except appeasement and yielding to republican wishes. He is NO friend to either progressives or independents objectives and the good people of New York understand that, I'm sure.
A Harold Ford win = republican win !

Am I missing something? bush is not in office anymore so we can't use his record to clobber the GOP with anymore? Since when? Let's say voters don't want to hear his name anymore, all of 2009 the GOP has shown what they really stand for - they've been complete assholes, they've openly refused to help the President while this country is sinking, they continue to defend and support the failed policies of the last 8 years, that Dick can't stop running his mouth, and Palin/McCain continue to forget that they lost the election - Dems should worry why exactly? Dems have plenty of ammunition, they just need to use it cleverly and hammer it home until Nov.

Screw Harold Ford. I'm a lifelong New Yorker, and I can't think of anybody who represents NY less than this opportunist fake. He's a pure politician. What the hell does some fake-twang-slinging panderer know about New York City? Go blow, you Republican-in-sheep's-clothing.

The only people who are supporting Ford are a few wealthy, influential Upper West Siders who are pissed that Princess Caroline wasn't given the crown.

All it would take to sink Ford now would be for a TV reporter to hand him a map of the state and, on camera, ask him to find Poughkeepsie, Oneonta, or Watertown.

Give him a chance - ask him to find Hyde Park, FDR's home town. For a real test ask him to find Staatsburg and tell us who Ogden Mills was :)

I would think that Democratic dissatisfaction with Gillibrand would be exponentially higher for Ford. Isn't one of the reasons people are not excited by Gillibrand her relative conservatism? Ford is even worse - a self-righteous conservative Democrat.

NY Democrats and Progressives had better get their act together now and squash Ford before he gets going. He's already getting attention, he was on MSNBC this morning working to screw the Democrats.
