Sen. Byron Dorgan told MSNBC's Ed Schultz tonight his surprise retirement decision was "no reflection" on the Democratic party and insisted he would have won reelection if he'd decided to stay.
Dorgan (D-ND) said he has served 40 years and now wants to do "some other things in life." He said he would prefer people ask, "Why did he leave so soon, rather than why did he stay so long."
"This gives me the opportunity to do that," he said.
Dorgan said the political climate showing him trailing potential Republican challengers is "not" why he's retiring and added, "I would have been successful this year."
Dorgan said he talked "at some length" to President Obama today and that he's not concerned about the political climate.
Schultz, who earlier today said he had been courted to run for the seat, asked Dorgan to consider staying.
"I have to ask you tonight to hang in there," Schultz said.
"God bless you," Dorgan responded.
Schultz pressed Dorgan on the reimportation of prescription drugs issue, a source of friction between him and the White House.
Dorgan fought for an amendment the Obama administration helped to kill during the health care debate, and Schultz asked if that left him with a "bad taste."
"I'm not going to tell you I've got a bad taste in my mouth," Dorgan said. "I'm going to get that amendment passed ... and save the American consumers $100 billion."
Schultz asked if Dorgan would consider a spot on the Obama Cabinet.
"It hasn't been offered yet, Ed," Dorgan said.

I hope Dorgan does get offered a cabinet post at some point. Not sure which department would be best for him, but he would be amazing in any of them... perhaps Treasury?

Amazing people think he's awesome now since six months ago he was teh evil because of his vote against cramdown and his wife being a secret lobbyist for banks or something.

Shame... I reckoned Treasury because of his otherwise consistent pro-regulation stance... he voted against the repeal of Glass-Steagal
And FDL can blow me. They've become about as disjointed from reality as the Tea Partiers... and to think I used to think Kos was bad

Oh, I have no issue with Dorgan at Treasury...certainly his support of Glass-Steagal more than makes me feel comfortable in that position, and his real reason for opposing cramdown, in that it would cost North Dakotans a lot of tax money since North Dakota wasn't dealing with a foreclosure crisis.

The difference between Daily Kos and FDL is that at Daily Kos, there are monkeys in the zoo, but at FDL the monkeys are running the zoo.

Amazing cash raising monkeys who are invited to address congressional caucuses, break national stories, and who's talking points are now distributed to democratic legislators.
Them's some damn talented monkeys!

Yes, you're right. Let's get rid of all the Democrats this year and elect all Republicans. After eight years of George W. Bush, everyone seems to have forgotten just how bad things can be in this country. ONe more term with the Republicans in power will doom either the country of that party. God help us all. Republicans....the party of NO.

'This year's Daschle' - a poem
Fare thee well, o august organ,
the to and fro of learn'd debate.
"Time to move on", thought Byron Dorgan,
the K street sirens won't abate.
Could it be that this year's Daschle,
to "spend more time with family",
will soon find that all that cash'll
keep him right here in DC?
