MSNBC's Ed Schultz said tonight on "The Ed Show" he is "a long way from any kind of decision" on whether to make a bid for the U.S. Senate as a Democrat.

"I can't say I'm even considering it right now," Schultz said. "I'm in a different place than politics right now."

His show is less than a year old, and Schultz said "to go from Fargo to 30 Rock is a dream come true for any broadcaster."

Earlier today, Schultz revealed that North Dakota Democrats asked him to throw his hat in the ring, and a top contender opted not to run.

Tonight Schultz didn't rule it out, noting that no one has officially announced for the seat and that the race would be "intriguing."

"I plan on living a long time," he said.

Schultz, the subject of a new draft movement, said he wanted fans to hear it from "Your friend, big Eddy."

Schultz previewed the issue several times during the show, during which he also asked Dorgan to stay in the senate.

Ed should hire Steve Hildebrand to run his campaign (if he decides to run).

Of course he's a long ways away, because if he decided anything now he'd have to quit his show. He won't decide until the last possible minute - sorta like that cat out in Arizona thinking about primarying McCain.

It will be interesting watching Ed over the coming months to see if he changes his attack/approach, or seemingly starts focusing on a message.

Any way to find Ed's ratings in ND?

Yeah, our big friend Eddy may just have to tame down his tune a little & get off his high horse. Not to mention cutting the President some slack.

I expect he'd have to leave the show shortly and start on the retail politicking it will take to win over people without firm opinions about him. That worked for Franken. He should also learn from Franken that any bad thing Republicans can bring up, he better bring up himself first. Franken's biggest problems were penny-ante stuff, but they almost beat him.

There was a question as to whether he is constitutionally able to run in ND because he has not lived there CONTINUOUSLY over the last 5 years. It turns out, however, this is not a problem:
____________________________

"A Fargo area paper reports that Schultz CAN run because that rule is only if he were running for a state office. He can, however, run for the US Senate.

Here’s the Article

Schultz initially quashed the idea of a Senate bid, saying he couldn’t run because of a North Dakota law requiring a candidate to be a state resident for five years. He and his wife have been living in Detroit Lakes, Minn., for the past two years, he said.

However, the residency law Schultz apparently was referring to pertains to statewide executive offices. The U.S. Constitution requires only that a U.S. Senate candidate be “an inhabitant of that state for which he shall be chosen.”

Schultz owns a home in Fargo, as well as a home and 60 acres of hunting land in Mott, N.D., he said."
