RNC chairman Michael Steele's new book, Right Now: A 12-Step Program For Defeating The Obama Agenda, has a lot of Republicans angry, the Washington Post reports -- because nobody knew it was coming out until it hit the shelves this week.

"The book came out and everybody went, 'Whoa, what happened?'" said an aide to a senior House Republican, who said his boss learned about the book on cable news. "No one in the House or Senate leadership knew he had a book contract."

As Greg Sargent reported yesterday, a serious question exists as to whether Steele might be using his position as RNC to financially benefit himself through book sales: "So if Steele is profiting while the party is losing donors, that will only give Steele's critics more to be irked about at a moment when they're already plenty upset with him."

One positive review of Right Now has come from former Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-GA), who wrote a glowing foreword to the book. And Gingrich's praise of the book itself shows why a lot of other Republicans wouldn't like it: "He's different, he's gutsy, his book is tough, his book is honest. His book's going to make a number of Republicans mad, because it says we deserved to lose in '06 and '08, and we better learn some lessons from it."

Steele also committed another gaffe this week, as Think Progress discovered, when he appeared on Dennis Miller's radio show and appeared to deny that he'd ever sought the RNC's top spot at all: "I feel this is part of a calling for me. I mean, I didn't ask for, I didn't seek this job, I didn't ask for it. It wasn't part of my, you know, charted course in life to wind up as chairman of the RNC. You know, there was a convergence of moments here."

Of course, Steele ran for party chairman a year ago, and won a multi-ballot election at the RNC's meeting in Washington.

Late Update Greg Sargent also had this story on his blog before the WaPo proper. "His book claims that Republicans are going to be running on these principles in 2010," said a senior House GOP aide. "That was news to the Republican conference. If he's going to lay out party principles you'd think he'd be consulting with others in the party."

Between Steele and Palin, it's kind of refreshing to see conservatives who apply the conservative principle of "I got mine, screw you" to the Republican Party itself, and not just to people who didn't have the good sense to have as much money as them.

because he also bashes Republicans in it. Does the GOP really want every Senator and Rep being asked if they agree with the sentiments of RNC Chairman that the GOP deserved to lose in 06 and 08?

Strategically? Absolutely.

If the GOP won't seriously confront the reasons it's losing it has no hope of ever being in the majority again.

There are serious African-American leaders like Barack Obama and Colin Powell. Then there are jokes like Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, and Michael Steele.

Don't misunderestimate Rev. Sharpton. By sheer unabashed assholedness, he gets a lot done. Honestly, would you want Sharpton holding a press conference about you? Neither does anyone else, which markedly ups his effectiveness.

I find it hard to believe that the GOP didn't know about this book.

Why are the GOPers so upset? They want things both ways, they are following the advice within the book, yet they want to deny that are,and feign their anger?? Denial and Hypocrisy are the mainstays of the Republican Party platform and nobpdy should ever be surprised by that.

This book with Steele's name on, the Chairman of the GOP, only shows the extreme desperation of the GOP.

Zero focus on improving the lives of Americans or how Republican elected officials could better serve the American public. But only a terror based focus on 'attacking' the American government for political gain.

Never the solution, always the problem.

Think about it.....with the GOP right here at home, who needs terrorists from other countries?

As Keith Olbermann stated, is clear that the terrorist and the GOP have the same objectives'. Any harm to America or the American people is seen as a big win for both Al Qaeda and the GOP.

Another example of the Republican Party exploiting the ignorant for gain. "Okay - we'll get the black guy as RNC Chair and then we can dodge the racist label. See, everybody, we have a black chair, we have a big tent. Yeah, yeah, that's the ticket."

And just like the religious right and the teabaggers, it backfired on them. No surprise that Steele for exploited his position. He IS a Republican, after all

I want Steele in the news as long as it upsets the GOPtards. If they ever get comfortable with him, I want him gone, Pronto.
