Jones: Americans Will Feel 'A Certain Shock' From Flight 253 Report
National Security Adviser James Jones told USA Today that Americans will feel "a certain shock" from today's upcoming report on the Flight 253 attempted bombing. Jones said that President Obama "is legitimately and correctly alarmed that things that were available, bits of information that were available, patterns of behavior that were available, were not acted on."

Orszag Confirms Fathering Child
White House Budget Director Peter Orszag released a statement yesterday, confirming the New York Post report that he has recently fathered a child, with former girlfriend Claire Milonas: "In November, Claire gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. Although we are no longer together, we are both thrilled she is happy and healthy, and we would hope that everyone will respect her privacy." Orszag recently became engaged to ABC News reporter Bianna Golodryga.

Stupak On Pro-Life Democrats: 'We're Not Overlooked Anymore'
In a new profile in the New York Times, Rep. Bart Stupak discusses the role he has played in the health care debate, and confirmed his intentions to block the health care bill if it does not include the anti-abortion language he passed in the House. "Before, when we talked about pro-life Democrats, you'd get a snicker and a laugh," said Stupak. "We were just always overlooked. We're not overlooked anymore."

Dodd's Retirement Could Boost Boost Chances For Financial Regulatory Overhaul
The Washington Post reports that Sen. Chris Dodd's (D-CT) retirement could potentially improve the chances of passing a financial regulatory bill. "He's got time to finish this, and without the white noise, the clutter, whatever you want to call it, of worrying about being reelected," said Ed Mierzwinski, consumer program director for the U.S. Public Interest Research Group.

Pelosi On Final Health Care Vote: 'Hopefully That Will Be Soon'
Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) told reporters yesterday that Democrats are close to arriving at a final vote on health care, though she declined to guarantee it happening this month. "It's possible," said Pelosi. "We will bring the bills to the floor when we are ready, and hopefully that will be soon."

Romney Will Visit New Hampshire
Former Gov. Mitt Romney (R-MA) will make several appearances in New Hampshire for his upcoming book tour, the New Hampshire Union Leader reports. The book tour also includes stops in Iowa, a seeming hint that Romney could be gearing up for another presidential campaign.

Hey man, he's just fighting for the interests of the unborn... except the millions of unborn who will be denied access to the benefits of basic maternity care if this bill isn't passed.

Can we please not use the term "pro-life" for Stupak? I don't see how someone willing to block health care rights to millions of children over the age of 0 can be considered "pro-life."

Exactly! These people aren't pro-life. They are anti-choice and we should call them that.

Or as Barney Frank put, their concern for life begins at conception and ends at birth.

50 million Americans killed by other Americans in abortions since Roe is a choice that can not be justified.

Healthcare comes after the right to live.

500 million Americans killed by other Americans since the defeat of a health care bill can be justified? No, wait....I think that is 500 trillion, isn't it? Let's see you top that.

That's because you apparently believe that real, viable human life begins at the instant of conception. I don't believe that a fetus becomes a real person until the cognative brain function begins (approximately the 6th month of pregnancy). We can disagree on that, but I've never believed that one side has the right to force the other to believe exactly as they do. In the meantime, humans-born and unborn-are denied the basics of health care due to insurance company greed and profit margins.

But these sociopaths don't actually care about children. If they did, they would do everything they can to end the suffering of all children, even those who have apparently devalued their worth in the eyes of Republicans by bearing the "sin" of cognitive functions. It's the equivalent of telling a starving child that you can't give him a piece of bread until abortion is outlawed. It's not principle, it's sociopathy veiled thinly by political dogma.

City Guy and Stroszek - your comments here are some of the most succinct and cogent statements of pro-choice and pro-health care reform arguments I've ever read. Well done.

Your notion that the two are separable just betrays the bankruptcy of your ideology. "Abortion" is a red herring for those devoted solely to enriching themselves and the super wealthy at the expense of actual, living children.

If all the bits and pieces of information about the most recent terror plot were not acted upon by our security system, then what was the whole exercise of creating the Homeland Security Agency about?

The creation of the Department of "Homeland" Security was a political publicity stunt to make the Bush Administration look "tough on terror".

Well ... right except if you recall it (DHS) was "forced" on Bush by Congress - including Dems. He readily fell into line.

The right to life is fundamental and more basic than a claim to reproductive rights.

Unborn children, given a choice, would choose life not death by abortion.

"Unborn children" are, at the earliest stages of pregnancy, nothing more than tiny lumps of cells that are splitting and multiplying, without any consciousness or cognitive function at all. They cannot sustain this process without the nutrients provided by the host body. In this regard, they are no different from a tumor. By your logic, then, a tumor -- if given a choice -- would choose "life" not "death" by removal. If the right to "life" is fundamental, as you claim, then we should stop performing surgeries and chemotherapy to remove these tiny little creatures from our bodies.

Modern medical technology shows the difference between a tumor and an unborn child.

I didn't say there aren't differences. My point is, to many of us, those differences are negligible: an embryo is far more like a tumor than a living, breathing person. That concept most likely violates your sense of the sacred, but that's the reality: many of us simply do not see the situation the same way you do, and nothing you say is going to convince us that a lump of tissue inside a woman is more important, and deserves greater protections, than the woman herself. You have the freedom to adhere to a narrower viewpoint, if you like, but others deserve the same freedom to have dominion over their own bodies. Trying to prevent them from that having that freedom would be the same, in my mind, as me trying to prevent you from curing yourself of cancer.
