Democratic candidate Martha Coakley has a very tough new ad in the Massachusetts Senate special election, hammering Republican Scott Brown as a right-winger not cut out for this Democratic state.

"Who is Scott Brown, really?" the announcer says. "A Republican. In lockstep with Washington Republicans. Blocking tougher oversight of Wall Street. More tax breaks for the wealthiest. No new prescription coverage for millions of seniors."

"Brown even favors letting hospitals deny emergency contraception to rape victims," the announcer says, juxtaposing the smiling Brown photo with video of a cowering young woman, presumably meant to signify a rape victim. "He lacks understanding and seriousness. In times like these, we can't afford a Republican like Scott Brown."

Late Update: The ad was taken down from Coakley's YouTube page, with a new, nearly identical one put in its place (which we've re-embedded in our post). Only one difference stands out -- namely that the fine print in the original video said it was paid for by the "Massachusettes" Democratic Party, while the new one has corrected the misspelling.

Good job by Coakley finally attacking Brown, but the remaining unanswered question is: how big is the ad buy? Is it saturation or close to it? Is it statewide? The attack ads need to hit saturation level to really work.

As long as they're buying enough points, attacking Brown should finish him off. It shouldn't take much to put him away, and it took Coakley taking a long nap and Brown crawling up for Brown just to get as close as he might be getting.

It's also worth remembering what reasonable expectations should be for this election. Ted Kennedy already a living legend beat freakin' Mitt Romney only 58-41, a 17-point margin, in 1994, and Kerry beat popular incumbent Governor Bill Weld only 52-45, 7 points, a couple years later...and that Kerry-Weld race was viewed as potentially much closer for a long time. So there are circumstances when a statewide election can be closer than one might think for Massachusetts even for a popular longtime Democratic incumbent. So if Coakley wins this "only" by 10 in an open-seat special election, it's not cause for alarm in my view. I think we might be a little spoiled from Kerry and Kennedy getting no real challenge the last few times and Kerry and Obama both carrying the state by 20-plus points the past couple times. But the state isn't necessarily THAT one-sidedly Democratic on a PERMANENT basis.

The other unanswered question is: why didn't the Democrats hit and hit frequently that "Brown IS Bush-Cheney"?

Twice now in these debates, the R's have telegraphed their worst fears about being tied to Bush-Cheney, by aggressively trying to preempt any such comparison. For Coakley and company to accede to the Republicans' wishes by not going there, is stupid stupid stupid. It's as if they heard Brown say "I'm not Bush or Cheney!", and their reaction was, "Oh. Sorry!"

They should have lathered, rinsed and repeated, until Brown turned into a "You're not running against Bush and Cheney!" talking doll, with no time for the rest of his disingenous message. At which point, voters might have started saying "I think he protests too much".

But I'm sure the highly-paid Democratic political consultants don't want any help from us amateurs...

Does that mean if there isn't an upset, you won't be coming back?

No, he just won't be looking to see who is making jokes, but that won't be a problem since we'll all be making jokes... and lots of them.

Does the GOP get its candidates out of some cloning factory? Brown looks like he came right out of a Tom Tomorrow cartoon.

It would be nice if Ms. Coakley, and/or the people in her campaign, were able to correctly spell the state she wants to represent.

Massachusettes?

Do they check their facts this carefully?

Best response to a claim of "I'm not Bush-Cheney!" is:

You just said that you don't want to be associated with Bush-Cheney. What did Bush-Cheney do that you do not approve of?

This is called journalism? How convenient it is to leave out the fact that Brown supported the right of Catholic hospitals to deny these contraceptions to rape victims. Do support forcing these Catholic institutions to do this if it is against their principles? I'm no Catholic but they should have protections against this. It was the right decision.

This lady thought she won the "Kennedy" seat when she won the primary. Talking to voters and campaigning was below her. Don't believe me? How else could she possibly lose this commonwealth?

If this "lock-step" ad is the best she has against Brown it is beyond over. This is a good man that has a great story. He was a troubled youth, his parents divorced four times each. He did a total 180 and has devoted his life to good causes. I really don't think Choakly has anything to drop anything in the next couple days.

For all you who think it was actually an effective ad (I live in MA and it's not), what connection does Brown have to Bush or Cheney? Wasn't Martha just raking in the drug company money last night?

Brown may not win but this is a sign of things to come. Latest poll of voters who "will vote" has Brown 5 points ahead. I won't have to come back here, you'll hear us all laughing from MASSACHUSETTS.
