A new poll by the Omaha World-Herald shows Sen. Ben Nelson (D-NE) is losing support back home after the Senate health care debate.
The poll shows just 42% of Nebraskans approve of the job Nelson's doing in the Senate, while 48% disapprove. More than 60% of respondents said they were opposed to the health care bill and "a majority" were opposed to Nelson's vote in favor it of it. That's after Nelson negotiated a unique deal in exchange for his vote that requires the federal government pay the full costs of expanding Medicaid in the Nebraska in perpetuity.
The dip in approval would worry any politician, but it's especially surprising for Nelson, whose political career has been marked by broad support in his state. In 2006, pollster SurveyUSA reported Nelson was the highest-rated Senator in America, based on his 73% approval rating at the time.
Nelson's current term in the Senate ends in 2012. But he and his allies have already begun a campaign to raise his flagging approval ratings in the wake of the health care debate. The Nebraska Democratic party has spent $350,000 on ads supporting Nelson, the Omaha paper reports, and Nelson "has been aggressively arguing his case on radio shows and in meetings with newspaper editorial boards."

Is there another Democrat in Nebraska who could possibly win this seat? If not, the GOP will pick up this seat in 2012 and Democrats will be even more at the Republicans' mercy.

Dead wrong. It is time for the Democratic Party to remember that it exists to accomplish policy goals, not merely to wield political power and get people elected. The Dems do more harm than good with DLC Dems who are just Republicans by another name. Nelson isn't a Democrat. Good riddance.

Oh, dude, that is so intellectually dishonest that I really can't believe it's you saying it.
The fool's constituients are dumbass wingnuts. 60/40 wingnuttery, as far as the eye can see, out there in Nebraska. Corn and wingnuts.
Much as we despise him for being too far right, the fact is that he's being punished by his constituients for moving too far left, pure and simple, by voting for the evul soshulist plot to kill gramma and give honest hard working folks' tax dollars to welfare queeens.
Doesn't mean he's not a complete dumbass, of course, because he totally is.

I'm sure you won't mind if I send this post to the nice folks in NE.
It's about time the pompous, arrogant and tyrannical base of the Dem party is exposed.

Well, it's not clear what Ben Nelson's convictions are, at this point. Does he stand for anything besides Ben Nelson's re-election? Might help for him to take a stand on a matter of principle where he is not a shadow Republican.
It's a shame these Dems can't figure out how to win on a popular issue like health care reform.
