The so-called purity test touted by some in the Republican party as a way to ensure they field conservative candidates hit a major hurdle today. The Republican National Committee's State Chairman's Committee voted unanimously to oppose a purity resolution that some members of the GOP wanted to use to decide whether candidates culd get party funding, CNN is reporting.

The chairman's committee rejected a resolution requiring that GOP candidates to prove they hold conservative positions on eight out of ten key conservative positions, such as opposing President Obama on health care and the stimulus, in order to receive RNC funding.

Despite the setback, the purity resolution hasn't been completely killed. The resolutions committee can still decide to bring it to a full committee vote on Friday at the RNC's general session.

An "accountability" resolution, would empower the chairman to cut off party funding for a candidate if the chair judged them to be insufficiently conservative, is still on the table, according to CNN.

Get James Dobson in there - he can give them all purity rings to go with the purity pledge. Maybe a tiara?

The whole point of the "Purity Resolution" was to reject it so that the GOP could then claim they're not a bunch of mindless ideologues.

Reagan would fail #5 clearly in that test. And one could argue that part of #1 (he exploded the deficit) and a good part of #7 (he secretly sold arms to Iran to free hostages in Lebanon via Iran/Contra)... any others he would fail that would put him on the proposed RNC enemy list?

If they do go through with the purity test, I'll bet at least half of them will end up getting knocked up.

They don't need a purity test. As we all know, Republicans are naturally pure.

Com'on guys, pass the dang thing. How else are you going to get your party cleaned up? Let Steele take each one in a private room and administer the test. He can do a little rap thing on who passed and who failed and serve some potatoe salad and fried chicken under the big tent. I'm sure the teabaggers really want you to have the test.

Just to be clear though, they can still do blow and cheat on their spouses, even with same sex partners, right?
