Sen. Chuck Schumer will be primarily responsible for writing a new comprehensive immigration reform bill for Senate consideration this year, a new role on an issue that's stalled twice in recent years.

Immigration and creating a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants was one issue Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-MA) championed, bringing together a broad coalition and coming close to a deal in 2006 and 2007.

When an ailing Kennedy gave up his seat on the Judiciary committee during the last Congress, Schumer (D-NY) assumed the role leading the immigration subcommittee.

Sources tell TPMDC that Schumer and Senate Democrats are working with Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) in an attempt to craft a bipartisan bill.

As we reported yesterday, Democrats who threatened to block health care unless illegal immigrants were able to get coverage are likely to back the final health care compromise if the White House offers a firm commitment to dealing with the immigration issue this year.

House aides are a bit wary since Schumer is newer to the fight and they were used to working with Kennedy.

House aides also point out they've held dozens of hearings on immigration, hearing from interested groups across the spectrum including labor groups and large employers. Those hearings haven't yet happened on the Senate side.

"We've said we can have something that can be ready to go whenever the president chooses, as soon as early this year," Schumer spokesman Brian Fallon told TPMDC.

White House aides have signaled key immigration players on Capitol Hill and in Washington-based interest groups that Obama is serious about pushing a comprehensive bill this year.

Sources tell TPMDC that Deputy Chief of Staff Jim Messina has talked to groups and lawmakers interested in immigration to say that it's possible the Senate could start debating a bill this spring.

But a House staffer warned, "Any time a White House makes a promise on legislation it's difficult because it's not up to them."

As we have reported, House Democrats refuse to vote on a bill until the Senate passes immigration, with members not willing to be caught again in a position where they vote on something politically untenable only to be told they have to accept a more conservative Senate version.

Late Update: White House Spokesman Nick Shapiro tells TPMDC:

"Senator Schumer has been a vital leader and tireless advocate for comprehensive immigration reform. We are greatly looking forward to working with him to finally fix this broken system."

Now if we can only get Lou Dobbs into the Senate, we could have some real fun with immigration reform! *snark*

So Chucky is going to take time out from spending quality time with his torture buddy Michael Bernard Mukasey and promising those dirty fucking hippy liberal clowns that, yes Virginia, there WILL be a public option, to write the new Immigration laws.

If I was a member of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, who are reportedly pledging their votes on HCR based on Obama's promise to pass comprehensive immigration reform in an election year, and considering the fact that Chucky was Obama's point man on keeping the PO clowns in line, well, let's just say I would be ordering my new butt plug right about now.

A-fucin is a-comin...

I couldn't give a rats ass about being classy when dealing with a torture apologist like Chuck Schumer.

I guess being civil is more important to you than Schumer supporting torture and lying to liberals about the PO.

It's all about priorities I suppose...

Immigration is a perfect issue for Schumer to polish his liberal credibility on. He won't have to pretend to take on Wall Street interests who seem to be at the bottom of almost every other domestic issue ailing the country.

I don't know who writes the 'headlines' here at the TPM, but the one on the front page is, indeed, over the top.

When it comes to immigratiion, the "deep thinkers" among the Democrats, is pretty damn shallow, and it's obvious, unless your star=struck for entertainment value.

Lost among all the jibber and jabber in white America, it this mordant issue attendant to our "littlest citizens". These are the kids born here in the USA and to Undocumented Immigrant Parents. And when these parents are repatriated to their nation of origin, these kids suffer egregiously. Consequently, America and its deep-well of decision-makers, turn their respective backs on these kids, just as Bush's admirals and generals turned their backs on the Privates, Corporals and the Sergeants.

Therefore, no one knows if these kids receive three squares a day, receive decent medical care, live in a hovel, receive a qualitative and a quantitative educational experience. Thus, the list is long, and the Great Scribblers--on both the Left and the Right, haven't got a clue when it comes to being an 'intellectual heavyweight, and which is just another exemplar of Bush's Litany of Choices when it came to crafting and implementing for America, a 'criminally stupid' society.

Maybe we should allow all the aunts and uncles, the grandparents and the great-grandparents to come to the US also?

How about the cousins? They need to come to the United States too, in order to be a family unit because it would be most beneficial for the children, nurturing family values, you know?

Maybe we could allow all the other siblings of the undocumented border crossers, citizenship too, just in case?

While we’re at it; we could go to Africa and bring back all the orphans of Aids victims? They have no one to care for him or her either.

Just a thought, any problem with my idea?

This definitely ties in to the discussion over on the McCain-Hayworth story! It will be interesting to see how far away McCain stays from Schumer and this renewed effort.

That will be pretty interesting. I think he won't touch the bill with a 10 foot pole. Has to watch his right flank.
