Rep. Joe Sestak (D-PA) tells TPMDC that Sen. Arlen Specter's eyebrow-raising suggestion that Rep. Michele Bachmann should "act like a lady" was "unacceptable."
"I've been with Michele Bachmann on TV before a couple of times, and she overrides, but you know what, it's a debate of ideas and it doesn't have to be a sideshow," Sestak said in an interview today. "You just don't treat someone that way. Those kinds of words are unacceptable."
As we reported yesterday, Specter was testy with Bachmann (R-MN) during a Pennsylvania radio show.
"I'll treat you like a lady, so act like one," Specter said. "Now wait a minute, don't interrupt me. I didn't interrupt you. Act like a lady."
Specter reportedly has not apologized for the remarks. Bachmann's office didn't return our calls.
Specter has not spoken with the congresswoman since the interview, one of his aides told me.
Sestak said Specter "just shouldn't have gone there" and said the comments show his political rival is an out-of-touch "elitist."
Sestak is challenging Specter in the Democratic Senate primary on May 18, and has not been shy about criticizing the former Republican as wrong for Pennsylvania.
The Republican National Committee also took an opportunity to blast Specter, calling on him to apologize to Bachmann and his constituents.
"Senator Specter's rude and arrogant comments yesterday were not only disrespectful to Congresswoman Bachmann, but demeaning to all women," RNC Co-Chairman Jan Larimer said in a statement.
"Women should never be treated as second class citizens. It's clear Senator Specter has spent too much time in Washington, and this November I am confident Pennsylvanians will choose a new direction," Larimer said.

I'm waiting for Bachmann to apoloiize for lying about the president and his motives. In fact, she needs to apologize for lying about damn near everything. And, I'm waiting for the GOP to apologize for supporting a flaming lunatic for election to the U.S. House.
By comparison, Specter has nothing to apologize for.

Look at all the so-called progressives defending, dismissing, and supporting Specter's misogynistic statement. How pathetic.

He should apologize, we're better than Republicans. Actually he should retire because he'll lose to Toomey.

He shouldn't apologize. What should he have said? Act like a gentleman? It's all about showing some manners, and not about being an elitist. I did not know showing manners meant one was being elitist.
However, you are right, he should retire. Not because he would loose to Toomey, but because it is better to leave on your terms than to be forced out. He will eventually be forced out - if not by this Nov., then before the end of his term. He is getting too old.

It's not about behaving like a lady or a gentlemen. It's about not interrupting when someone is speaking. How is that a gender issue?
If he should apologize for anything, it is to the ones who are sensitive and take offense over nothing. This is a non-issue. Much like Harry Reid was a non-issue. You cannot say someone is a racist for speaking about race. You cannot call someone a sexist for using the word lady. It is ludicrous.

Maybe Specter should have made a gender neutral request and asked that Bachmann "act like a sane person."

I think Mr. Specter was right to confront her about her behavior. Perhaps he should have said '... behave like a civilized human being.' instead of '... like a Lady'. But, these differences are semantics... Mr. Sestak should have kept his opinion to himself. Surely he does not think that such rude behavior has a place in a civilized debate?

Specter is a gentleman, and is of a certain age where asking someone to act like a lady or a gentleman means "act civilized."
Maybe he should have asked Bachman to act like a human.
It's always rich when the GOP brings up charges of sexism.

Trumped up charges. No one would have batted an eye if she had said "act like a gentleman" to him. The remarks clearly had nothing to do with her gender; he was holding her to a standard that clearly was gender-neutral.

Michele Bachmann's male detractors compensate with vitriol for their lack of virility. Old Specter is vacant & vapid even with Viagra, but for the vibrant & vigorous bon-vivant, Michele is quite the lady...Ohhh, what a lady!

You seek to degrade not only all senior citizens, but also every person who has an age, young and old alike! I'll go ahead and report you for acute abuse.

Spector seems to have found his inner liberal since he switched parties! He seems to be quite at home with us now and I am liking him more and more every day. In the present moment of disarray and disheartenment for all clear-thinking Americans, he is sounding a firm note of resistance to the ugly strident authoritarianism that Bachmann epitomizes.
Someone has to have the nerve to speak plainly and directly to the teabagging mob and apparently that somebody is an eighty-year-old former Republican. Snarlin' Arlen puts the Screaming Mimi in her place and all progressives are relieved to see someone stand up for America and our democratic heritage or even just for common decency. I felt the same way watching this as I felt seeing Welch confront Joe McCarthy.
I think this effectively wins the primary for Spector and ends Sestak's campaign. It's now Arlen Spector, progressive hero and liberal lion, versus Joe Sestak, wimp and apologist. You the man, Arlen! Keep up the good work and let's hear more of the same in the future.
Don't you dare apologize for saying what needed to be said. Now we need more of our leaders to have the guts to call a spade a spade and condemn the insanity of the GOP and their teabaggin' buddies.

Interesting that Sestak did not ask that Bachmann apologize for disrespecting the Office of the President when Bachmann was at her teaparty podium with signs facing her that depicted President Obama as a chimpanzee . .
Why was this woman not asked to apolgize ??

I've got a different take on this -- it probably hurts Spector, not necessarily on a "sexism" front, but rather on a generational one.
One of Spector's greatest weaknesses is that he can seem old, out-of-touch and crotchety (yes, all very politically incorrect characterizations of seniors). It doesn't help an 80 year old Senator seem tuned in to the world around him if he goes on television and uses a hugely outdated phrase such as "Act like a lady."
Batting down crazy Michelle Bachmann is totally appropriate -- doing it using terminology that is 40+ years out of date is not good for trying to project a vigorous youthful image. And is frightfully similar to Harry Reid's use of the word "Negro" - neither is inherently racist or sexist, but they are both wince-producing for their profound tone-deafness.
This is probably not a good year for a long-serving elderly incumbent Senator running for re-election to sound like a throwback to decades ago.
Major gaffe?
Not really.
Deserving of an apology?
Not necessarily, but couldn't hurt to do one of those "I'm sorry if my choice of words offended anyone" cop-outs.
Bad optics for an 80 year-old Senator fighting for re-election?
Most definitely.

it's not demeaning or sexist, he was telling her to act like she had some class. An equivalent statement to a male would be "act like a gentleman." It was in no way sexist, and frankly Bachmann has ZERO class, so it was merited. this is a non-issue.

Sestak is a joke. Can he not try to score political points against Specter when Specter is only trying to point ou what a moon bat Bachman is. If he had any poltical wits he would say, "I wasn't there but some of the things I heard REP Bachman say on the House Floor made me question whether she was a human being, much less a lady."
