Appearing today on Laura Ingraham's radio show, RNC chairman Michael Steele said that he wrote his book Right Now before he became chairman. The problem is, the book itself doesn't read like it could have possibly been written before January 2009 -- it was clearly written in late 2009, either in November or December, and is based entirely on current events up to that point.
"I wrote this book before I became chairman. Because of the clock and the calendar, I wound up doing it now," said Steele. It's not clear whether this might have been intended to somehow deflect criticism from other Republicans over the book -- GOPers have said they didn't know Steele was writing a book until it was released -- or whether he might have been speaking figuratively that he decided to write the book earlier. It's hard to know exactly what he meant.
When we here at TPM heard that Michael Steele had a new book, we immediately bought a copy and I proceeded to read the whole thing cover to cover. Unless Steele is remarkably clairvoyant, it seems as though it could not have been written before he became chairman -- it is overwhelmingly a commentary on the political situation in America under President Barack Obama, as of late 2009.
The book is full of references to current events in 2009: The stimulus bill, the health care debate, foreign policy, ACORN, the party switch of Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter, the confirmation of Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, the Tea Parties and the 9/12 March on Washington, etc.
On page 38, Steele uses a partial quote from Barney Frank, which was spoken on the Ed Schultz show on October 26, 2009. Steele also takes the quote amazingly out of context, as a Nexis search would demonstrate, to give the misleading impression that Frank was openly admitting that Democrats want to control every last area of the economy -- but that's another story.
On page 61, Steele says of Obama: "He champions bipartisanship, but he supports a process where Nancy rams a 2,000-page healthcare bill through the House of Representatives on a Saturday night with just a single Republican vote." That vote occurred on November 7, 2009.
In his chapter, "Take Back National Security," Steele discusses the Iranian elections, the Honduran political crisis, and the Fort Hood shooting, among many other hot topics of this past year.
A few stray parts of the book may have predated Steele's chairmanship, and been incorporated into the overall narrative. A speech he gave on February 2, 2008, is included at the end as an appendix, as is Ronald Reagan's "A Time For Choosing" speech from 1964. There is Steele's discussion of the values he learned from his working-class mother, a theme that has run through his whole political career. There is his take on how the Republicans failed to live up to their small-government principles and lost the confidence of the electorate in 2008.
But even those are mixed in with current events. For example, the chapter on previous Republican failures also includes, on pages 27-29, a discussion of the November 2009 elections. He refers to the gubernatorial victories of Chris Christie (R-NJ) and Bob McDonnell (R-VA), and the three-way roller-coaster ride in NY-23 of Democrat Bill Owens, moderate Republican Dede Scozzafava, and Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman.
And finally, Steele refers to himself on pages 14, 28, and 73, as being the chairman of the Republican National Committee.
Late Update: Steele's publisher, Regnery Publishing, told the Hotline that Steele had been "working on parts of the book before he was chairman. He's made some updates recently."

The RNC would be better served if Ms. Palin were at the helm. She's less gaffe proned than Steele and would get into far less trouble from the likes of Limbaugh and others.
It's likely she would make very few disparaging remarks about the party that weren't true, and her comments would be praised for their insightful and constructive criticism.
Secondly, the GOP could benefit from the optics of having its first female chairperson--something the dems have failed to do.
Finally, Ms. Palin continues to cement her bona fides especially among the growing ranks of the tea party movement. The GOP would be well served to get in front of this movement before it tears the party apart. With Palin at the helm, it's likely tea party supporters would willing and cooperatively come back into the currently shrinking tent of the grand old party.

Mikee, if you and your rethugs in crime clearly feel that the majority of Americans are against what the Obama administration, why don't you run for President and change all that. If your right, you should win by a major landslide. But, good luck with that.
You clearly seem to have all the answers for someone who is not allowed anywhere near the classified data that the POTUS gets daily.
You guys were eerily silent when Bush was ramming 2 wars down our throats, not to mention virtually alienating the entire planet against us.
While I enjoy the thought that Pres. Obama got accolades thrown at him (the Nobel prize), you can a least take comfort than Bush had things thrown at him as well - a SHOE!!!! actually two shoes!!! Talk about utter hatred. No POTUS in our history has ever had that kind of treatment.
It was your party that put us where we are. Sometimes treatment feels worse that the problem, but when the problem finally is nuetralized, we will all feel better. Your party will then have to contend with saying no to all the treatment this (Bush plagued country) is getting. We are simply working with what we have and trying to undo all the damage the Bushies created. Americas prescription for you and your brand - take some time to reflect on the Bush years and all that you allowed him to do. Take all the time you need. We recommend 20-30 years.
If you need a refresher, get the movie "W"!!! Great movie.

It's like the Book of Revelations
Misbelievers claim that it was written in 90 CE or later, after there had already been more than seven emperors, therefore after the events it prophesied had already occurred. There is reason to believe that it wasn't published until at least 90 CE, but of course it must have been written before the events it prophesies. Of course!
So, yes, Steele's book talks about events that occurred in 2009, and his chairmanship, despite it having been written before he became chairman. That's because it's prophecy, every bit as reliable as Revelations. The fact that it was only published after the prophetic events it recounst just makes it, like Revelations, retrospective prophecy. Only the hopelessly ungodly would not be able to follow that logic.
Leave it to you secular humanists to use the very thing that proves that Steele is in so good with the Lord that he's been granted the gift of prophecy, as if that were some dig on his veracity and credibility. O ye of little faith!

Why would Regenery even agree to publish a book by Steele prior to his being elected RNC Chiarman last January? It's not like he was a major public figure before then. He was known for being Republican while black, for losing elections, and for fabricating the infamous Oreo cookie incident. Was there a market for a book by him before he became chairman?

One was cheating with staff
More where cheating
One was caught cheating on a open mic
One was lying about 9/11, grrr
One was lying about torture
And list goes on...and on...
and what do the pundit to invite them to thier shows and not even mention or correct their lies(fox and fools excluded, they can't call out noone cause they lie too). But as an American, it is just shameful that for a story or rating, some journalist have stoop to the level of disrespecting themselves, and the people they too are suppose to be serving!

All of Steele's awkwardness with this is easily explained. The phrase "I wrote..." once meant taking a quill pen and and inkwell and forming letters and words on a piece of paper. That no longer holds. Then it meant sitting down in front of a typewriter and pecking away for hours putting words on paper. That no longer holds. Later, it meant sitting in front of the computer and pecking away, periodically using spell check to remove the worst errors. Well, that no longer holds either. Now, for Repubs at least, it means finding someone to write a book and list you as the author. Well, Steele found the someone before he was officially in his current position. Thus, he is speaking truthfully, and really had no control over when that someone would actually put words into a computer memory. We all owe him an apology.

First of all, I salute the brave staff at TPM for having the courage to read Steele's book from cover to cover while risking great personal brain injury. I once spent a week in the hospital after reading excerpts form one of O'Reilly's book.
Secondly, don't tell the GOP base that Steele is lying, it might burst the little bubble of ignorance that shields them from reality.
I see on the TPM front page that if Michael Steele didn't exist, TPM would've created him. No, Steele is a product of the modern Republican Party. Or Mel Brooks.
