Former Sen. Strom Thurmond's youngest son, the 33-year-old Paul Thurmond, may run for the U.S. House from South Carolina.
Paul Thurmond, a lawyer who currently serves as vice chair of the Charleston County Council, has established an exploratory committee, Politico reports.
"I will move forward with this exploratory process emboldened by the belief instilled in me by my father, Strom Thurmond, that public service is a privilege and an honor," Thurmond said in a statement.
Thurmond said last year that he wouldn't challenge the Republican incumbent, Rep. Henry Brown. But he began considering a run after Brown announced last week that he won't run for re-election.
The field will likely be crowded with Republican challengers. Carroll Campbell III, the son of a popular former governor, has already announced his run.
Strom Thurmond was one of the longest-serving senators in U.S. history, retiring in 2003 at the age of 100.

And he's invoking his father right out of the gate. Brilliant.

i happen to like a woman who ran last time, and lost by 4%. when Brown announced he wasn't running again, she, Linda Ketner, is thinking about running again! this district's primary should be interesting to watch (for me, anyway, and i live in the 3rd district)

You know, if he cut off his lips and tattooed about six-dozen liver spots on his head he'd be a spitting (drooling?) image of dear old dad. But will he get an endorsement from half-sister Essie Mae Washington-Williams?

Maybe he'll use her in his campaign ads. "You Negroes can trust me, because I've got a sister that's half-Negro."

Great. Just what we need. I swear, I'm ready to begin stumping for a Constitutional amendment forbidding children, husbands, wives, sisters, brothers, grandchildren and variegated & sundry cousins, nephews and nieces of elected federal officeholders to be elected to federal office themselves.
As for state offices, well, they can do what they want, but I think it wouldn't be bad for them to take this up, too. We could be rid of the whole Bush and Cheney clans with one amandment.

South Carolina -- the most ignorant state in the union -- and proving it again and again since 1861.

Oh, come on now...there are a bunch of us real progressive in SC. True, we're just not enough to counter the hide-bound, true-believin' whack-nut, shit-tard republicans who run the place from top to bottom. Just don't hold the entire state to blame for its whack-nut, shit-tard office holders. I have to live here and deal with (some of) these people. It's hard, and...he forgot Poland!

i live in SC and if a candidate tells me that prayer is helping him make his decision, then i am a bit leery
"...“After much prayer and deliberation, I have asked for and received the blessing of my family and friends to explore a campaign to replace Henry Brown as representative for South Carolina’s 1st Congressional District,” Thurmond said in a statement. ..."

i fear he will become a new member of "The Family" and look for a room on C Street. we have too many members of The Family from SC as it is.

I live in South Carolina's 1st Congressional District (Charleston to Myrtle Beach). It is the fastest growing part of South Carolina and could possibly become two congressional districts after the next census. If Democrats are going to make any inroads in this state, we would be the best bet. In the last congressional race a woman who is openly a lesbian came within 4 points of upsetting a Republican incumbent. Though the odds favor the Republican here, the local GOP is about to have a civil war, so there may be an opening. We deserve some attention and financial support from the national Democratic Party, and we don't like to be called imbeciles. Don't judge us by Jim DeMint, Strom Thurman, Mark Sanford, and Joe Wilson. We are better than that.
