Tea partiers beware: "You can and will be banned for being a liberal."
Organizers behind the upcoming Tea Party Nation convention we wrote about this morning told members today that MSNBC's Rachel Maddow tried to join the group and "we banned her 7 minutes after she joined."
TPMDC, which also has signed up for the TPN mailing list, received an email to all members warning them that as the convention nears "we will in all likelihood be invaded by liberal trolls looking to disrupt the site." The subject line was "Liberal Troll Alert!"
"Tea Party Nation reserves the right to ban anyone for any reason we feel necessary to ensure the well being of the site and our members," the group writes in the email, which you can read in full after the jump and view here.
Late Update: Maddow responds.
Please be advised that over the coming weeks, as the National Tea Party Convention draws near, we will in all likelihood be invaded by liberal trolls looking to disrupt the site.Rachel Maddow joined this morning and we banned her 7 minutes after she joined. I have little doubt she will mention this on her show.
Per our FAQ's:
Note to Prospective Liberal Trolls: TPN does not tolerate liberal trolls. If your sole purpose is to join this site in order
to disrupt the flow of constructive dialogue against liberalism,
you will find your time here very short. You can and will be banned
for being a liberal. If you wish to debate the virtues of
liberalism (as though there were such a thing), there are many
other sites on the web who will tolerate you. TPN is not one of
those sites.
Tea Party Nation reserves the right to ban anyone for any reason we feel necessary to ensure the well being of the site and
our members. When they show up - ignore them, report them and we will ban them.
Thank you all for your patriotism and support!

Yep, Raphael Maddow is devious. Sometimes she looks like Mr. Bean, sometimes PeeWee Herman, other times Matt Damon. But the psuedo-baritone voice always gives her away.

I wish it was a spoof. But he wouldn't be camped out waiting for the next post the way he does if he was just spoofing, I do believe he's a bona fide pro troll on assignemen. My best evidence is that, apparently he's got time to hang out and wait for every new post, so he can comment first, and while many of us probably spend way too much time checking in over the day, I don't think most of us sit expectantly waiting for the next post, it would take either a crazy person or a paid person, and while the crazy theory has some legs, the pro theory seems more likely.
Methinks they consider this humble blog to be influential, or they wouldn't plague it with first-posts every time.
One good bit of evidence that there's a pro troll on board is their penchant for being first with the worst. There are others who fit this pattern, but I'll leave it to the rest of you to look into that, I don;t want to be accused of making false accusations.
One curious fact; quite a few of those i suspect quit commenting right after the healthcare reform bill made it through the Senate. Maybe they know how many of our lawmakers have a staffer reading and reporting on this blog for them, and figured they might use TPM to discourage their support of the HC bill, and when it passed, they quit wasting their time.
More than one supposed progressive who trashed the HC bill as worthless now seems to have left our ranks, in the wake of the Senate passage.

I really would like to see TPM or some other news org with resources look into the prevalence or not of paid trolls. What organizations are paying them and how do they operate.
I live in Boston, a liberal city, and the liberal Boston Globe web site is overrun with wingnuts every day on every story. I suspect paid trolls create dozens of web IDs to boost their numbers, and that their goal is to create a critical mass of wingnuts so that it attracts others and they can dominate the discussion. I have watched progressives show up on the Globe site and be stunned by the viscious and snarky rightwingery all around them. The upshot is liberals end up shunning the site and it gets even more conservative dominated.
Starting in the late '60s, rightwing organizations successfully plotted to spread their ideology through thinktanks in the media, academia and government. They were doing a really thorough job of controlling the debate until the Web came along. It's the one media where the left actually has a strong voice. I think the conservatives recognize that and are doing their best to disrupt it.

One of the best clues as to what the right wing is up to is to look at the accusations they make against the left. And since they accuse liberals of plotting to disrupt the flow of the conversation on their site, I suspect that you are absolutely right that that is what they themselves are doing here and elsewhere.

You nailed it! The 'Right' mentality is that they can only think like they think, they cannot think or empathize or sympathize in someone else shoe's it is part of the authoritarian psychological makeup. Therefore when they accuse or project they merely are thinking that the Left is a mimic to their tactics and mindset.
As far as an organized blogging effort...that too is their mindset...they look at influencing the idea marketplace as manipulation of the message, who is the fastest, loudest, most popular anything that can confirm tactically their ultimate position of authoritarianism---meaning they are in control--forget the idea of what is the right thing to do---it is control that is important.
Now with this purging of anyone not pure to their cause or ferreting out "trolls" an interesting old message board (the earlier version of blogs) term. Going back to the late '90's a troll was a person who was a fan of another sports team that the message board world began...my guess is that you can line up some old college BB or FB communities from areas like Kentucky, Indiana, North Carolina, Florida, Texas, Michigan where "trolling" was once done to infuriate a fan base.
And that is what is so fascinating---many rabid authoritarians errr Right wingers just can't debate either policy or politics---either you are with them or against them.

Simple; nuggets of progressive reason tend to coagulate in fruitful conversations on blogs like TPM, and can blossom like a lotus if the idea is new and pertinent.
In this way, the blogs have helped provide both encouragement and options for framing to candidates on the campaign trail. That soup of creativity was recognized by the right after the 2006 take-over, and that is when the first "regulars" seemed to pop up on so many blogs, supplanting the previously chaotic, spontaneous and unaffiliated trolls with a cadre of loosely-organized naysayers and defeatists, posing the most negative aspects of every conversation for no other reason than to keep that creative flow all dammed up.
Does that explain it better?

Rachel Maddow's voice is hardly "baritone." It's not a little girl's voice, certainly, like Dana Perino or Elisabeth Hasselbeck, but it's not Bea Arthur or Carol Channing, either. It's just a very pleasant woman's voice. Far more pleasant, to my ear, than Sarah Palin's or Michelle Bachmann.
She's also a very attractive lady.

These people need a bogeyman to oppose, which is why they eventually turn on each other. A Liberal showing up on their site would simply unite them until the interloper is driven out. Best to let nature "take it's course" so to speak, and let them devour each other.

I saw it. Yes, I did catch it. Apparenlty the RNC isn't that stoopid to let Steele on with Rachel. She will wipe the floor with his sorry butt. Since you watched, you must have seen the Ron Paul interview. I think the guy's a nutcase. What's your take on him. Rachel seems to like him

I was actually making dinner while her show was on, so only caught bits and pieces. My husband saw it and *cough*, said he liked him. I didn't see the interview, but I've heard enough over the years to know that I don't like him. I'll have to see if I can catch the interview later off her site. Maybe he's saying something new.

Oh! And about Steele, I don't think she would do it "intentionally". As is her style, she'd probably treat him with much respect and kindness. Unless he acted like a complete ass, which I don't see him doing. With what's happening with him at the moment, I think it could be an interesting interview, although probably a political death sentence for him.

Rachel is super diplomatic, even with those with whom she totally disagrees.
With Ron Paul, she can identify with his anti American Imperialism, but they did not get on the subject of Ron Paul's excessive libertarianism. He is anti tax, anti government, anti regulations, etc. So he represents the far left in his anti-military stance, but the far right in his anti-regulation stance. Interesting dude, but not to be trusted as president.

I disagree with much of what Ron Paul stands for, but I have to say that he strikes me as sincere and quite genuinely concerned about the welfare of the country. Even though I disagree with most of his positions, I do respect him. I don't see him as either a nut case or a self-serving SOB the way most of the GOP leadership is.

Dear all:
Our country, as you are all aware, is under attack from the godless liberals and the satanic muslems, lead by the cryptomuslem b Hussein OBAMA. We need to fight against this tidal wave of communism by making some needed changes constitution. But what? What do you think we should change that will help stop the assault on our rights?
My response:
I agree, but first we should be clear about what the attacks entail. That is, we should consider exactly the nature of the threats, list the specifics, etc., and then craft a response.

This quote from one of the more rabid illiterates on the TPN site pretty much sums up their entire agenda:
"If you can't pay for something, why should you get it for free. Better yet, why the hell should i pay out of my taxes for you to get something for free."
They send their kids to public school, enjoy the protection of fire and police departments, have clean water and functioning sewer systems, etc., etc., etc. And all of it subsidized by other people's taxes.
It's like I said earlier. Their entire agenda boils down to: "I got mine, fuck you."

Not only that, they insist that tax money go to parochial schools. See, you can use tax money to subsidize things in religious schools without making that a taxpayer funding of religion; disallowing it is discrimination against religion. But you can't use tax money to subsidize clinics for women's health care in poor nations unless you completely ban the clinics from even talking about abortion, because that would mean US taxpayers funding abortions. Tax funds that benefit religious groups are not fungible; tax funds that benefit women's health are. See how that works?

Ok I just joined the site and have been poking around for a bit. They have a chatroom with a little over 100 people in it. Here's a sampling of topics:
- January 7th will be a day to remember, due to "troll attacks".
- Keep an eye out for "sleeper trolls"
- The site is being subjected to "psy-ops" and "cyberterrorism"
- One of the more prominent members "wants ip logs [of the trolls] so he can wreak some havok"
- Their image gallery is full of pictures of guns, cartoons of obama, and giant sandwiches. Not sure about that last one...
It really sounds like they feel they're being attacked by terrorists, and they're almost enjoying it. I'd have to say that by and large these folks *want* an enemy, and they're downright happy to have one right in front of their faces.

It's one thing to organize a movement in a free society, it is another matter entirely to organize a movement that adgeres to the freedoms of that society.
"The next level" sounds ominously like they are planning their own version of Kristallnacht.
Maybe they'll storm the streets to break out the windows of every Ben and Jerry's across the land.
Yes, that was trite, but when a group that has already seen guns carried into their events talks about "the next level" we can only assume they intend some sort of physical destruction.
I remember the group of Pinks, Quakers and Musicians for Peace I joined back in Davis, CA in 2002 to protest the inevitable invasion of Iraq, was made up of people who would never propose violence towards our political adversaries, or anyone for that matter. These were bona fide peaceniks, who lived it, they did not just espouse it.
No one ever came to one of our marches carrying a gun or swearing an oath to harm the "other side."
And yet we were spied on by state and local police (maybe the feds, too, who knows for sure?) as if we were planning mischief way beyond our simple marches.
I wonder if this new group of protesters, these gun-carrying, hate-spewing, war-loving tea-baggers, is getting the same kind of scrutiny from our law enforcement agencies at every level.
Probably not; the creeps don't spy on each other.
But I would suggest these 'baggers are more likely to turn their futility into violence, and I also suggest that is what the code words "the next level" is fomenting.
And the worst part about all of this, while we KNEW what we protested for "PEACE", plain ans simple, the baggers have no idea what their cause is, except that their enemies are "liberals."

Check out the price of tickets for the convention here:
http://tpn.eventbrite.com/?ref=eweb
$349 + $10 fee for the cheapest ticket.
Who is profiting from this fiasco, Palin for sure, there is a whole page dedicated to her. But who else, that's a lot of cake for a group that despises paying taxes.
Way too funny:
"Special Keynote Speaker for the event will be Sarah Palin, Governor of Alaska (2006-2009) and 2008 Republican Vice Presidential Nominee."
What no mention of her mayoring skills that were touted as reason enough for her to be VP.
One more classic quote:
"*Please be aware that any disruptive behavior will result in the immediate removal from the convention site and all ticket purchases will be forfeited. There will be no exceptions!"
I guess they reserve the right to disrupt others meettings, but their own. Pathetic.

we could start a good betting pool creating profiles and stating a liberal bias and then see how long it takes them to get deleted, the time slots may have to be kinda short though :)

They may have gotten sandwich guy, but using the same technique, I'm in!! And what a bunch of loonies!!
Here's a quote...
"This is a response to today's email from TPN:
"This is an excellent idea!! Keep the libs outa here !!!! The liberal weinies spew nothing but putrified, immature, uninformed, hot air. And their hated of all things Christian, American, and Constitutional is very evident every time they open their foul mouths. Personally, every libnut should be locked in a room and the only possession they can have is a copy of the Constitution. Once they have been redeemed by that glorious document, they will be released to join the rest of the true blue, patriotic, Constitutionally strong, God blessed Americans.
"Today is my birthday and thanks to God, our Founders, and all the men and women in uniform, I have the right and priviledge to say whatever I want. Afterall, this still is THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA......at least for now."

Wow, I was banned merely for agreeing with someone that posted that John McCain had cut someone off just as Franken had done with Lieberman. Oh, I did say that it wasn't McCain's best moment. I even was polite about it.
Banned....for that? That was probably my first, and last experience with a right winger site.

Folks, some info: First of all, that website is a Ning community. (See ning.com.) I own and run about 50 of them. The folks running it do not know that much about it yet, judging from what I saw on a quick visit this morning.
I am sure they are watching the Forum posts pretty closely. However, there are lots of interaction possibilities. You can post videos and photographs, for example. I happen to know from experience, because one of my networks has 120,000+ photos on it, that is is extremely difficult to monitor what gets posted there, unless you moderate them before letting them be posted. I suspect that we can find lots of unsavory photographs and videos in there. And, once a photo gets in past the first page or two of "new photos" - which can happen quickly when a lot are posted at once (You can do up to 100 at a time now, I think.) - it likely stays hidden in there for a long time.
If I were trying to harm that network I would prepare hundreds of images the owners might find inappropriate (for political reasons, not other reasons), join under a made-up ID and then post then all very quickly. OTOH, once they ban you all of what you did gets removed, so that may not be worth it except for some quick fun.
I haven't tried to post one, but it's unlikely they're doing that because (a) it is very time intensive and (b) they do not even user Moderate New Members in order to keep out even the automated Spam Bots which will eventually start joining and spamming, as they have done to many of my networks until I learned to moderate new members - which is a pain in the ass for a fast-growing network.
You can also liberally create "Groups" - which are also difficult to monitor once they are created. One of my networks has 1,200 and I have not been inside most of them. You could create a group and expect little that you do in there to be seen unless someone joins who reports it. Could be fun. You can also create Private Groups, which only those you admit can get into, except Admins can see inside IF they look. I expect they don't have many Admins yet.
They also don't seem to have paid attention yet to the fact that something you put on the Event Calendar shows up on the first date that it happens. The top item right now is an event that was put in as starting on November 26, 2009 and lasting until November 2, 2020. That's just gonna sit there on top of their calendar until they figure that out.
Oh, my, the running of the website reflects the inane and incredibly ignorant and hate-filled speech inside.
Also interesting, if you look at the Members list, you can go to its start and see who joined when. The owner was the first member and it looks like his girlfriend was second. Many of the members - at least early on - probably gave their real name and their real home town location (something I would never do.) so mining the Google with that information will find useful stuff about the kind of folks who join.
Also, folks who were early but who have not been active since, and especially those who have not even bothered to have a profile image, may not come back for weeks. One could load the Walls on their My Pages with lots of time bombs.
Oh, there's more, but I have useful stuff to do.

I got banned there tonight for asking which part of the Constitution the President was guilty of destroying, as well as a few other non-provocative questions. These people are in no way serious. If they didn't have Dick Armey's people behind them they'd have fallen off the radar last May.

Oh, if (when!) they ban you all you need to do is clear out your browser cookies and you can go in and have some more fun. Good for a few yucks, but it does get tiresome. Not to mention needing a shower afterwards.

If they think "liberal trolls" are a problem, wait 'till one of the 4chan subgroups (the GNAA, for instance) takes an interest... :)
PS: if you don't already know what 4chan or the GNAA is, I'd advise *not* googling them. Some things can't be un-seen.

Tea Party Nation isn't the first site...it was actually spawned off of another one. The guy that founded the original went off to form TPN. The original site is here:
http://912communique.ning.com/
You wanna see some really crazy sh*t, then click on the "vent" section. My personal favorite are the birthers, but man, if you look at some of their ideas, it is truly totally wacko.
And as a nod to Splendidone, when I joined their site I changed genders, location and name, and I used an email address that is only for junk.
check out their sister site...its more fun and less moderated :D
cheers

I joined. Not to troll, but to engage in an intelligible conversation of the important issues of this country (poor spending, poor education, the importance of socialized medicine and the bills that backfired because of the resistance).
I got banned. The few valid points they have were proved to be shadowed by an ignorant, stubborn attitude to block out any sense of reasonable conversation or new idea.
I wonder if the line was crossed when I said that Jesus was a socialist?

Same here. I joined to discuss issues politely and rationally, but was banned after the first post. The blogger was recommending actions to help correct the abuses of Wall Street. I commented positively on most of his points, but corrected his assertion that the debacle was caused by the "socialists" of the current administration. I suggested that maybe the problem was enabled buy the deregulation of the financial industry begun by Reagan and continued by subsequent administrations through that of G. W. Bush. I guess the last straw, however, was when I asked for explanation of just how the run-away financial abuses were consistent with socialist ideology. I was not able to get the answer to that question as I was banned from the site. So much for rational debate with Tea Baggers.

There are ten maddow viewers just on this thread, and the mystery-lurkers at TPM who watch her likely outnumber the commentors about 1,000 to 1, so do the math.

Yeah, except you've claimed more than once that the teabaggers come from all walks of life and all political persuasions. Now we find out that y'all don't want liberals, despite the repeated claims that there *are actually* liberals in the teabagger camp.
So which one is it, guy? Do y'all really have a big tent, or are y'all just blowing smoke again?
