In the latest effort to drum up the Democratic base in the Massachusetts special Senate election, the campaign of Democratic nominee Martha Coakley has sent out a fundraising e-mail from Ted Kennedy's widow Vicki Kennedy, who writes about the importance of keeping this seat in Democratic hands.

"The importance of having a voice and a vote that you can count on in Washington has never been more evident than during this ongoing health care debate. And we're going to need every vote again," Vicki Kennedy writes.

"Ted fought for national health care reform for 40 years. He believed that every American deserved their chance at the American dream, but that as long as an illness or preexisting condition could bankrupt an American family, that great goal could never become a reality. We need Martha Coakley to continue our shared fight for national health reform, to reduce costs for businesses and families and increase coverage in Massachusetts and throughout this country. This race will be very close and we need you to get us to victory."

Dear Friend,

Throughout my husband Ted's life, you were always there for him, for me and for the entire Kennedy family. We are tremendously grateful for your friendship and support in the past, and we ask you to stand with us now to support Martha Coakley in the crucial race to fill Ted's remaining term.

This Tuesday, January 19 everything is on the line. The people of Massachusetts will decide who will be their next Senator, and we need Martha Coakley.

The importance of having a voice and a vote that you can count on in Washington has never been more evident than during this ongoing health care debate. And we're going to need every vote again.

Ted fought for national health care reform for 40 years. This race will be very close and we need you to get us to victory.

We have just 6 days to do the hard work of electing Martha Coakley so that we can continue the agenda that Ted made the fight of his life - reforming health care, ensuring equality and justice for all, protecting our seniors, and rebuilding our economy to allow everyone to prosper. That fight for working families cannot stop - not now, not when so much is at stake for Massachusetts and America. And that's why I'm asking you to ensure that we are victorious this Tuesday.

Stand with me and support Martha Coakley by making a contribution of $35, $50, or whatever you can do today. My husband fought all his life to keep moving this nation forward -- now we must make it the fight of ours.

We need to do everything it takes to ensure our shared fight continues. I am asking you personally to do one more thing for Martha Coakley. We cannot do this without you.

With gratitude,

Vicki Kennedy

P.S. I know together we can keep fighting for our shared vision of the future. Please go online today to www.marthacoakley.com to make a difference.

It is beyond pathetic that a Democratic candidate for the Senate in Massachusetts is now having to use Ted Kennedy's name to get people to donate and vote for her.

Beyond pathetic.

Oh shaddup. Any Dem running statewide in Mass. will do this, especially in a bad year for Democrats. Coakley is no star candidate, obviously, but lay off.

She acted like the seat was a Democratic birthright and that the primary was all she needed. Brown was out working for votes eventhough the christmas holiday when Coakley took a vacation - people respect Brown and dislike Coakley for taking them for granted.

Lay off? Shaddup?

Why? She waits until a week before the election to take on her opponent?

Maybe this is simply a tempest to energize Democratic voters in Mass. for next Tuesday, but from outside Mass, it looks like a political crime that a Democrat might be in danger of replacing Ted Kennedy.

The crappiness of her campaign is well-established. But right now, one week before the election, I want Coakley do whatever it takes. And that includes getting VIcki Kennedy involved.

This would, in fact, be a really good time for Democrats to try to overcome their tendency to engage in recrimination, however justified, before the fight is over.

The situation is what it is. If she wins and she's smart, and all accounts indicate she is, she'll learn from the mistakes she made here and never make it again. Just as a ridiculously young governor from the state of Arkansas learned some lessons when he unexpectedly lost his race for reelection in 1980 and just as a fellow named Obama learned a few lessons when he got his ass whipped in a primary challenge to a four term incumbent the 2000 race for a house seat.

In the meantime, this race is just too damn important for us to all stand around bitching about the lack of perfection. That's why I just threw a few bucks at it. Hope everyone else here will do the same.

Anyone with "CT" in their name should know that crazy, senseless, and horrible things can happen in the Senator selection game.

This Brown guy is a right winger and a tool. Independent voters in MA can't be blind to that . . . right?

I disagree. She has the bully pulpit. Why not remind the voters what Teddy stood for?

If she does eek into office I hope the Dems boot her crummy candidate ass out in 2012 via primary challenge from somebody with guts. Coakley is Creigh Deeds in drag.

That would be "eke." And do you have anything to substantiate your inflammatory statement? Hs she ever used her "stance" as an excuse?

Some people govern better than they campaign. Sadly, we haven't figured out how to identify one from the other. And you haven't said anything that convinces me about what you said, either, BTW.

I wish people would stop pretending as if they saw it coming the whole time. This suddenly tight race was a surprise to every one. I have no personal love for Coakley, to me she is just a vote, but people need to stop ripper her and start helping.

I did as well. This is a wake up call to all Democrats for November too. Laziness pisses away all that's been worked for.

Just got an email from Schumer forwarding the Vicki Kennedy email, asking for $, and saying:

Martha Coakley is running to fill the rest of Ted Kennedy's term, and her opponent is a far-right tea-bagger Republican.

It would be bad enough to lose this seat -- and Democrats' sixtieth vote in the Senate -- right before the final health care reform vote. But it would be even worse for the decisive "no" vote to come from Ted Kennedy's old seat.

I have to agree... I think losing Ted Kennedy's seat to the Republicans would be politically devastating. How would one explain the loss of the seat of a stalwart Democratic Senator in a solidly Democratic state? Sure, we would get the "special election" spiel, but that weak explanation would be lost in all of the Republican (and Teabagger) gloating and the the concomitant media frenzy about "Democratic Doom."

They've raised $350,000 so far. Go Dems because while you piss us off, what's the alternative? Vote for the teabagger?

This is the first time I've ever donated to a political campaign, but it seems the stakes could not be higher. $50 for Coakley (and $50 to the Red Cross).

The progressive base of the Democratic party needs to become has hardlined as the conservative pawns are becoming on the right. For the past generation and a half, Democrats have ignored their base with such disregard that there is no fear of electoral repercussions. This is evidence by the behavior of the administration prior to the health care reform debates. The "public option" was never even on the table much less "single payer'. "Don't ask don't tell" could easily be repealed with an executive order. Escalating the fake "war on terror" by sending more troops to Afghanistan. Still putting wall street before main street.

The effect of all this is the glacial pace of any real change in our government. 30 years of conservative hegemony with a few years of limited reversal of that course. What is there to show for it? In the ranking of nations, other than tv's and guns per capita the US is not at the top of any list that is a positive benefit for its population;education, health, manufacturing, nothing.
Yet here we are as a nation, like a dog chasing its' tail, concerned about 'terrorism'. I said that because it is the far-right wing of this nation that is so concerned with catching and defeating the far-right wing of some foreign nation.

The shrinking middle class is happening because we the people have allowed ourselves to become part of this corporate serfdom. We watch our 24 hour news filled with advertisements to keep us drugged and buying. The 'news' is just a sideshow for the commercials. When a news anchor challenges a politician for lying it becomes "newsworthy" why? Because the norm is to allow it to happen.

Need further proof of the blurring of lines between news media, politics and commercialism? Look at not only the signing of Sarah Palin to Fox news but also how Ed Shultz was courted to run as a Democrat.

Is it really any wonder, the greatest American export of our times are blockbuster movies and video games. We sell fantasy to the world and do it well, so well, that we believe our own fantasies.

Coakley will win this election with comfortable margins on par with every other US Senate race in MA over the past 15 years.

Conservative media elites and the pro-Republican MSM tried this same hype strategy to Stampede the Cattle Herd with Romney v Sen. Kennedy in '94 --even published late "polls" showing the race tied or Romney ahead. President Clinton rushed to Mass to help campaign, and Kennedy took out a 2nd mortgage to beef up his campaign funds.

In the end, Kennedy crushed Romney (who spent $7M) 59-41. Yet even today, Republican spinners will refer to '94 as "a close race."

Sorry, Scott! You'll need to do more nude photo spreads to extend beyond the standard 15 minutes of fame...
