Every cloud has a silver lining. And for tea partiers in Illinois smarting over their failure to mount a strong challenge to Rep. Mark Kirk (R) in the Senate race, that silver lining goes by the name Adam Andrzejewski. He's running competitively in the crowded GOP gubernatorial primary, and as voters go to the polls today, conservatives are predicting an upset victory for the man who Erik Erickson calls "a Rubio" and Rush Limbaugh labeled "the Scott Brown of this contest."
As Christina reports this morning, conservatives appear to have struck out against Kirk. But, as a myriad of conservative thought leaders wrote yesterday, Andrzejewski has given tea partiers a new reason to get excited about Primary Day in Illinois.
A first-time candidate and wealthy businessman, Andrzejewski actively recruited tea partier support back in April. He spoke at a Tax Day Tea Party back then and, as he told Politico this week, his speech was the start of a beautiful friendship.
"I spoke for 15 minutes at that rally and that gave my campaign early momentum," he told the website. "I recruited precinct committeemen, built my emails list and signed up donors and that gave my campaign a tremendous boost."
Andrzejewski offered conservatives a policy platform the tea party message boards could love. He's hammered state corruption, accusing both parties of allowing it to infiltrate the state government. He promises to fight corrupt contracting practices by "opening up the books" on state government spending through a website. And he's suggested ending the system of distributing tax revenue collected by the state to local governments across Illinois (a plan that has made local officials uneasy.) The conservative fiscal advocacy group National Taxpayers United endorsed him after he signed a pledge to oppose "and and all tax increases."
Today, tea partiers count Andrzejewski as their man in the primary, a crowded field candidates which final public polls showed is led by former Illinois GOP chair Andy McKenna. But McKenna had less than 20% support in polling, with the rest of the candidates pulling around 10% support. Last week, Andrzejewski released an internal poll he said put him within 2% of McKenna. Conservatives say that number reflects the true story of the race.
On Friday, former Polish president Lech Walesa endorsed Andrzejewski, claiming that Andrzejewski's outsider campaign was similar to the Solidarity Movement Walesa is known for. In a state with a large Polish population, conservatives have said the Walesa backing carries a lot of weight.
Early turnout figures from today should give his supporters more cause to be excited. The Chicago Tribune reports "very low turnout" in today's elections so far, the kind of news that's usually good for insurgent candidates with a motivated base like Andrzejewski. While most stay home, Andrzejewski can probably count on his voters to turn out.
Andrzejewski's national conservative stock has risen since the endorsement, with major voices in the conservative movement singing his praises in the past several days. In the American Spectator, his tea party-backed campaign was likened to "George Washington's ill-equipped colonial soldiers outnumbered by the professional troops of the British Empire."
At the National Review, speculation has begun that Andrzejewski might not simply win the primary, but could have a shot at taking the whole race. The Democratic candidates have been locked in a vicious primary fight, and the election will be the first since Gov. Rod Blagojevich (D) was thrown out of office. The magazine reports that the political climate is ripe for a conservative win. "Virginia, New Jersey, Massachusetts -- could Obama's Illinois be next?" the magazine asks.
Illinois tea partiers are excited, too. "I think we'll get a tea party candidate elected to the governorship," Chicago-area Tea Party organizer Ralph Sprovier told TPMDC. Sprovier went on to praise Andrzejewski.
As for the candidate himself, Andrzejewski says an upset win is coming, not just tonight but in November as well. "I think the parallel . . . is that Republicans are winning in Democratic strongholds by healthy margins," Andrzejewski told the National Review when asked to compare his race and the recent string of GOP victories including Massachusetts. "I expect the same in November when I'm our nominee."

I know this has nothing to do this clown in Illinois, but I'm not at all surprised he is ultra winger.
My ex-stepfather-in-law was an Andrzejewski. He was a complete jerk - he once chased me out of my own house yelling because I didn't change my name when I married. Needless to say he never came to my house again. One of his relatives cornered me at a party and asked me if there were lots of k**es and n****rs in Portland. Swell folks.

I get the sense this whole tea bagger thing is just a way for Republicans, and that is exactly the ticket they are running on, to dodge blame for the failures of their party.
They get to run as Republicans but can cite they are "tea baggers" when someone questions them about fiscal responsibility, history and social issues. They can dodge not just the 8 years of Bush, but of every GOP failure of governance since Nixon. That's saying a lot since Republicans have never once shrunk government, cut spending, reined in the deficit or lived up to their so-called "principles."
So anytime that is mentioned, these tea baggers get to dodge it by claiming some new form of expiation and avoid the label of their true party.
Tell me, who else gets to run unfettered back and forth between calling themselves the "tea pary" but legally run as a candidate of an entirely different political party?? No one. But Republicans are getting a free ride to run as Republicans and claim very little affiliation to it, other than money, support, legality, and caucusing that is. It's amazing and TPM is contributing to it.
Just call it what it is. They are Republicans running scared and calling themselves Freedom Fighters all the while. Christina and Evan you can do better.

I'm unclear on why Lech Walesa would endorse this guy - is it just because of the Polish connection? Does Walesa realize that Andrzejewski is the kind of right-wing reactionary that his own government suppressed?
Or more importantly, how does the endorsement of a liberal trade-union leader (foreign, at that) play with the teabagger base?

Hey Liberals here's what your choice is up to....
Don't believe me ...Check it out for yourself online or just wait for your paycheck if you haven't noticed it yet.
OBama did not want this our especially before the elections but it leaked. Payroll folks were told how to tax so you need to be ready for a decrease in your check of at least 3%.
If you were at 25% you are now 28% and if you were 28% you will now be 31%. This is how they are solving the deficit instead of cutting programs. They didn't even have
the guts to tell us what was going on. Also for 2010 tax year they are going to stop altogether or in some cases limit the mortgage interest that we can deduct. And the Charitable deduction is GONE! This is for the middle class too folks even though we were told that the middle class were not going to have tax increase.
Change we can count on! You know what they say about people who live in glass houses....SHUT UP!

Yeah, that $4 reduction in my paycheck has me wondering what to do. That was it, $4. It would be a latte, if I could afford lattes on my salary. I think I can handle $4 less a month. It would be even better if I didn't have to pay a bloody fortune for health insurance, but thanks to the evil (Republicans) the venal (Conserva-Dems) and the spineless (the rest of the Democrats) I suspect I'll keep paying until the glorious day I am eligible for socialized medicine.

You want me to subsidize your health insurance so you can afford lattes!!! Pay attention Socialists, this is why there is a tea party. You shouldn't need any lattes with all the Kool Aide you've been drinking. You'll have more than enough tea bags swirling around to get your fix on.

Oh, please... I live in Chicago where I've been barraged wtih campaign literature and calls. Until today, though, I had never even heard of Adam Andrzejewski. Mark Kirk has the nomination in the bag and just may win the seat.
