Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), one of the co-sponsors of Rep. Paul Ryan's Social Security-slashing budget proposal, went on Fox today to advocate privatizing both Social Security and Medicare.
Blackburn never used the word "privatize." But her idea to change the entitlement programs so people have separate accounts with their money is privatization.
"We need to make sure that individuals get the money out that they have placed in," she said. "This is one of the reasons we have had the discussion over and over for our younger earners of having accounts that have their Social Security number and their information on it, so you have that personal account."
The Fox host, Stuart Varney, then said, "It was roundly rejected when President Bush suggested doing just that."
When asked by Varney how Republicans could reform entitlements without cutting benefits or raising taxes, Blackburn called for "cutting back the bureaucracy that surrounds the program," and said many town hallers have suggested just that.
"You don't necessarily have to have benefit cuts," she said.

Another Republican bimbo. First class.
The overwhelming majority of SS recipients collect FAR MORE in benefits than they have donated to the fund in their working lifetimes. Even with interest.

In addition to a secure pension, Social Security provides disability insurance and survivors benefits. These save countless families from ruin when a worker is injured or dies.
Any discussion of the return on SS payments should include the value of this coverage.

Social Security gives a $255 survivor benefit. Canada Pension Plan (the Canadian equivalent) gives a $2500 survivor benefit. Canadians have not only better health care than a comparable American but a much higher CPP survival benefit too. Canadians get far more for their taxes than Americans get.

Right, Marsha. Medicare has SO much more overheard than private health-insurance companies. And everyone knows the bonuses that people in the Social Security Administration collect make Wall Street bankers look like pikers.
Like tens of millions of people, I've been paying higher SS taxes for most of my working life thanks to the Grenspan commission. And apparently all that's accomplished was to make the annual deficits look smaller and enable tax cuts for the wealthy.

Well, Social Security has a very low overhead (about 1%), and is considered to be very secure against hackers who would love to get their data.
So I guess it is now time to give it over to private companies who often fail to safeguard their information, and can pad their overhead and pay executives high salaries. Add that up, and I guess under the Republican arithmetic, you get savings!
But what many people don't realize is that a lot of people under 65 collect social security payments. Social Security is not just for retirees: it also provides monthly benefits for disabled workers and their dependents, and for the dependents of deceased workers. Together, these two groups comprise 31 percent of all Social Security recipients. Of course, if one casts them aside, there is probably a lot of savings. I suppose one would call that "compassionate conservatism."

Doesn't matter one bit how much is saved by cutting waste. With all the revenue being switched over to private accounts, there won't be a dime for the existing senior benefits.

Given that this is the quality of thought that emanates from Republican representatives, why in the world would Obama want to carry on a dialogue with these people? How could such a dialogue be anything but a complete waste of time?
She believes that savings will come from 'the bureaucracy that surrounds' Social Security? Does she realize how efficient SS is? Does she have any idea what she is talking about?

That's why you get 59 cents worth of health care from every dollar you pay in insurance premiums, insurance companies. Privatized Social Security and Medicare would give 59% return on money paid in as well.

When the republicans use the word privatize, it means giving it to Wall Street to manage---another case of further transfer of wealth.....imagine if Chimpy had succeeded at doing this......there would be blood in the streets because with the crash of the market, it would be gone with no federal government to bail it out.

So the Replublican Party wants to do the same thing that Bush wanted to do that was rejected a long time ago. Also, we have all seen what has happened to the Stock Market in the last year so lets have the people on fixed incomes rely on the Stock Market who is only out for themselves. Along with getting rid of Medicare which is how a lot of our elderly get insurance is the exact opposite of trying to get more people insured. I want them to explain exactly all of the good anf favorable things about this plan that would help me. A person in the lower class that needs so much help right now. It won't help me at all. This plan will only help the upper class and that is the only class they are worried about.
I can't believe that there are people that truly think the majority of Americans think this way. I realize not everyone will agree on everything but I can almost guarantee that more than 70% of all Americans will think this is a stupid idea. Who wants to trust Wall Street again. We should have seen how good that was going to be this past year.

You guys need to READ the freaking Ryan plan and not just read what commentators say about it. It would still be run by the government and not by wall street. it would invest in the stock market, which has annual returns of 10% over 100 years. What's the actual return on the SS stuff right now? It also guarantees you get what out what you put in even if things go bad for a few years (that's normally how these cycles work. It would be very similar to what ALL FEDERAL EMPLOYEES currently HAVE.
Also, the continued claim that all GOP supporters/reps/etc are racist are stupid, move on to a different point not the same old lines, also learn some history. Yes some of the supporters are not all that you would hope for, but there are plenty of well educated people out there as well.

Lol, EricC... how well did those returns on the market do in 2007-08? I'm sorry, but the stock market is risky and risking the money is not viable, wise, or prudent. What's more, it runs against the purpose and intent of Social Security, which is to provide a safety net that allows and encourages investment. It's like a money-market account where you put a portion of your retirement savings. Then put the rest in investments - if you're fortunate enough to be making more than subsistence-level wages.

You are so right, benintn. I am just now beginning to recover and that's after transferring a lot of my money into bonds. I did not retire 2 years ago as I had planned for the very reason that the stock market was in the tank. Marsha Blackburn has never been all that smart. I mean what does an image consultant know about government?? The Repugs in TN just sent her up there to nod her head and look pretty. I mean, can you think of one piece of legislation she's written that's passed???? And, if she's got such great ideas (as she told Pres. Obama last week), where in the hell have they been over the past 6 years when she could have actually done something about it??? Just proof, that is all about Marsha and not about the people. Yep, Greg Rabidoux gets my vote. Everybody who thinks Marsha's bad for America, log on to www.rabidoux4congress.com and give the man some moolah. To Eric--learn some history. The South used to be solidly Democratic. Then Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Bigoted whites flocked to the Republican Party in droves and form the core of the present day GOP in the South. Now, why would someone who is not a racist and educated enough to know the history, ever want to be identified with a bunch of hypocrites like that??? BTW, Marsha is from Laurel, MS, the same age as me, knows the history. That's why she's still a Republican. (Plus, she doesn't care about anybody but Marsha)
