House Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-VA) isn't exactly laying the foundation for the bipartisan part of next week's bipartisan health care summit at the White House.
At CPAC this morning, Cantor declared that "we will say no to this health care bill because no is what the American people want."
Asked moments earlier about what might be "up the sleeves" of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Cantor said, "Lord only knows what's up their sleeves."
Cantor said Democratic health bills are predicated on "back-door dealing" and declared that "these bills are ultimately designed to lead this country to a single-payer system, something that the American people reject."
We Republicans will go to the president and insist that he push the reset button and get serious about offering Americans a positive reform agenda.

President Obama isn't going to "lower any hammer". He's too weak and feckless.
This was a time when a Lyndon Johnson-type of democratic president was needed. Instead, we got a weak imitation of Jimmy Carter.
I'm ashamed that I bought into Obama's blather and even more ashamed that I made excuses for him and the weak democratic legislators for so long.

well, same types of comments throughout the primary and general election, and before every Obama victory--then Obama kicked everybody's butt. So, get ready to put away your angry rhetoric for the 20th time as he achieves another victory. Sure, it won't be a public option or a single payer, or whatever, but sitting around imagining that he had the ability to do this if only he weren't weak, or feckless, or whatever, is silly. I really don't understand where this kind of verbiage about Obama being week or feckless comes from. It just shows such a colossal misreading of Obama the man and the politician that I sometimes just think the people making these comments are big narcissists: they're too fixed on their pony, their murdered pony, etc. to actually put facts together in a coherent way.

The rate hike information and the CPAC statements, if followed up with by the GOP in the summit sessions, are the best things for Obama's style possible.
He really believes in the ability of people to work together to form a directed consensus. You don't cut people out of the process, but if they have nothing constructive to add you eventually let them cut themselves off/move on without them. This is a powerful way to accomplish lasting change as by the end of the process the vast majority of participants/observers come to find the outcome reasonable and all but inevitable, if not everyone's ideal solution.
However, it only works when people are put in a place they have to take a position and stick to it regardless of consequences. The GOP through all of this has been squirming from objection to objection without ever taking a stand. Most of it has been sniping with no meaningful alternatives, and mushiness about wanting some reform wihout really clarifying your position. The election of Scott Brown, though, seems to have made Cantor and others think they can just stand up and say no without offering anything to the process. That, and the horrible premium situation, allows Dems to come together and acknowledge there's no point to trying to convince the GOP of anything, and the American people to see the choice of vision for what it is - something positive if not perfect or nothing (with disastrous cost increases in the latter). At least that's what Dems hope will happen. If the GOP actually offers something good, bonus - but I won't hold my breath on it.

Very coherent summary of the situation. You say that this works out perfectly for his style, and one could apply that it's luck from that statement. And, so often, people say that Obama's successes are luck. Actually, his approach is probably just a really astute reading of personalities and trends that people are too wrapped up in their anger or hubris to bother noticing--he is REALLY good at predicting what his opponents will do.
In other words, Obama knows how people will tie themselves in knots, and spends his time organizing for a more important win while everybody's talking about how he will fail. And it's actually a help that his many foes consider this approach a matter of luck, or even a sign of weakness--if only I had a dollar for every time progressives have quoted FDR saying he welcomed the "hate" of the right, and wished Obama would crib the comment--or just don't consider newsworthy because there's no spitting or punching. It's a help to him because basically, people are underestimating him.

I agree, calbearinillinois. I'd add that this health care summit is meant to stiffen the spines of Dems in Congress who want to pass the Senate bill but are afraid of political fallout. Obama has designed this to limit the political price because, just as he did when he met the GOP legislators at their retreat and swatted away their propaganda there, he will do so here. They'll be more prepared for him this time but they can't change reality. Facts are on the side of reform. The summit will make that clear. And the highlights will be shown on cable and commercial tv, on the web, and in papers for days afterwards.
It also helps that Anthem Blue Cross, with their rate hikes, demonstrated,as no talking points from either side could, what happens without reform.

As liberals, we should be grateful for the Republicans helping to kill the Senate's pseudo-reform of health care. It is truly a disaster that could only further alienate voters from the Democratic Party and from voters at large.
Lest we forget...
Item 1: “A mere seven months ago (that would be around June 2009), The New York Times/CBS poll found that 72% of Americans ‘supported a government-administered insurance plan—something like Medicare for those under 65—that would compete for customers with private insurers.’”
Item 2: As of February 2010, the Democratic 'reform' has mandated voters pay premiums to private sector insurers; required subsidies be paid by the government to private sector insurers; stipulated the legality of insurers spending only 80 cents of every 100 cents on actual health care while spending 20 cents of every 100 cents on lobbying, 'sympathetic' candidates, CEO bonuses, 'administration' and fighting your claim for treatment; nixed the single payer health care reform and stiff-armed the 'government option',
Item 3: Other than PhARMA and the insurance industry - those who created the sop for themselves - everyone (well, at least, 72%) reject this charade Obama and the Democratic leadership calls 'reform'.
Obama and the Democratic leaderships cry "It could be worse" does not persuade voters that the bailout or the health care 'reform' was or is a good idea.
Thank you Republicans for saving the Democrats from themselves and us from Obama and the 'Democratic' leadership.

To sit back and wait until Hell Freezes over for the Republicans to cooperate is no excuse for doing nothing. It's time to use all the tools available for real change. Nuclear Option is one, Budget reconciliation is another, Bipartisanship was NEVER an option. If an effective law for health care can pass, which it can IT MUST! If Calbearinillinois is correct about Obama believing in 'consensus', then why would he not lead the Congress to support a single payer? The 'consensus' Obama is after is one in which all corporations agree to a bigger slice of the middle class's budget, either through direct premium payments or tax subsidies.
For a 'consensus' to occur for Obama, you simply exclude the voters and deal only with the vested interests.
Once the vested interests have figured out how to leverage the system to get into your/our pocket books, a 'consensus' has been reached , and Obama will peddle it.
It's not the consensus of the voters; it's the consensus of the lobbyists. To get them all to agree, you have to keep sacrificing the well-being and welfare of the middle class. This is what we saw in the Bush/Obama bailout and what we're seeing in the Obama health care reform.
The kind of 'consensus' Obama is after is the kind that puts people (voters, the middle class) last, because they've been excluded from the discussion (see Max Baucus hearings on health reform where no representatives of single payer were allowed to testify - same with the up-coming 'summit').
Dont let the process BS about 'consensus' and 'bi-partisanship' blind you to the reality. The reform is currently a mess and will only get worse, when the Republicans get their way with malpractice. (Malpractice is another great example of your rights sacrificed to their benefit, in order to reach 'consensus' through a process in which your and my needs are not represented.)

I think most of us realize the problem right now. Does Obama?
Obama has let these people jerk him around every which way. It is *high time* to get tough with them, and beyond *high time.* So the question runs, will wrap this up, or allowed continued sabotaging? They will be *happy* to jerk him around some more, agree to have another look at the problem, schedule a "bare minimum" number of additional hearings, working groups, just the "bare bones" in an "expedited" attempt to work out the "final details." And if he lets them get away with that, he begins to look a lot like a failed President because they'll use the opportunity to paint him as an ineffectual buffoon.
Right now has to be the end game, period.

Is that how the new bipartisanship is going to work? The bill won't even be posted until Monday...how are they saying, "NO" already? Typical.

"because no is what the American people want". This is about as useless & clueless as a politician can get. I guess this shows how terrible any ideas they actually have must be.
Tomorrows headline; Cantor says "Americans, all of them, hate teleprompters". He had more to say, but his teleprompter malfunctioned.

I have this fantasy: The room is set up so all the Dems are on one side and the Rs on the other. This is so we can see all the empty seats on the R side with name tags affixed to each one, so we know who exactly isn't there. Then Obama at the podium calls upon the Rs to present their ideas first, just to be polite you see. After a certain amount of jaw hanging, the Rs can start up with all the things they won't go for. Obama can say, "Yes, but give us your positive ideas on health care reform, things you propose to actually improve health care in this country." This should pretty much seal the deal for any viewers.
Or the Rs could bring Issa with his HR 3438 - at least Issa has something to offer, inadequate as it is. [Issa thinks his HR 3438 is a complete package, all that is necessary. You gotta give him some props for thinking of anything at all besides the big N-O. I am not an Issa fan in any way, shape, or form, but I'll give him some credit on this.]

It's become pretty obvious the republicans are for laws that favor the top 20% of the wealthiest Americans, and couldn't care less about anyone from the middle class on down. You see, those folks have no clout! This is what makes it utterly maddening when the poor, southern Bible-belt folks vote against their own best interests, including the teabaggers. Keep on voting against what will help you most until you have nothing left, dixielanders. Voting for a republican is like an Arkansas divorce; somebody's gonna lose a trailer!

OK, Thanks for sharing. Now get the fuck off our streets, don't send your brats to our schools, don't fly on our airlines or use our trains or buses, don't expect any help from our police, and don't wait for the fire department, don't mail any letters through our postal system, don't expect your savings to be insured, and don't expect our military to fight for you or your rights. There's more, but perhaps you get my point.

If you want to make an argument about small government, please do. Your thoughts are welcome. However, if you are going to mix in name-calling, there are plenty effing libtards here willing to go toe-to-toe with you. And, frankly, you are not very good at it. Kind regards.

If the answer is already known to be NO, then I guess there will be no need to cash the generous campaign contributions checks from insurance companies, nor pal around with insurance lobbyists.
How many in Congress who oppose the health care reforms would be able to get insurance on their own, at a price most Americans could afford?

In other breaking news, water is wet, the sun rises in the east, and stuff drops toward the ground when you let go of it.
When did DeMint make that "Waterloo" remark -- maybe nine months ago now? That, perhaps, was a news flash. This is just more of the same. How much longer are Obama and the Dems going to bend over and take it from these guys? Nothing has changed; the Repubs have clearly announced their strategy over and over and over and over and over again, and the Dems are still bleating "bipartisanship" like it's their mantra or something. What, exactly, will it take to get through to them that that's not ever, ever, ever going to happen as long as the guy in the White House is one of them nigra boys?

Meanwhile, major private insurers continue to drop or deny coverage to anyone who they regard as high risk, increase annual premiums by as much as 40%, and rake in huge quarterly profits.
It's a curious aspect of the conservatives' collective mindset that if their taxes increase a little to offset the cost of universal health care or a public option, all hell breaks loose and it's the end of society as we know it.
But if their private health insurance rates increase by several times what the tax would have been, it's all good, cause that's how the free market rolls.

just so you know, we conservatives don't mind paying for people who can't help themselves, we mind paying for those who won't. there is a difference.

And that overblown paranoia is what has led to the current situation, where foreign wars and bank bailouts sail through Congress, but health care reform stalls.
Health care reform really would make it cheaper for everybody! It just would mean that insurance company profits would shrink.

yes, and we all know that 'profits' are a bad thing. think of this, what would happen to you if the company you worked for didn't make a profit? and, really, outside of collecting taxes what does the government do well? now think before you answer, don't give me a list of what the government does, just a list of what they do well.

Cantor declared that "we will say no to this health care bill because no is what the American people want."
I seem to recall the Republicans lost the last election. I can understand why they wouldn't want to admit it, but you would think Democrats would point this out to them once in a while.

Don't really understand why some people think that profit is an absolute necessity. There are thousands of not for profit company's in the marketplace doing many great things and paying their people very well. Profit is primarily for stock holders. I seriously don't understand why our health care can only come from a system that puts profits before caring for their clients. If your not fortunate enough to be healthy and wealthy then perhaps you deserve your fate. That's a real moral position to take.
