Rep. Baron Hill (D-IN) is still keeping the door open to the possibility of seeking the Democratic nomination for the Senate seat of retiring Democrat Evan Bayh. However, it should be remembered that if he does seek the Dem nomination, for which Rep. Brad Ellsworth is already a candidate, it will be through a process without a conventional primary.
As we have reported, the fact that nobody filed the petitions necessary to appear on the Democratic primary ballot means that the state Democratic Party's central committee has the authority to name a new candidate. That meeting of the committee will come some time after the May 4 primary, and before June 30.
"A lot of people are undecided on the state committee. Some are favoring me. Some are favoring Brad," Hill told CNN. He also added: "I think I have to make it sooner rather than later. I think I need to make it this week."

Ellsworth would be as bad or worse than a Republican. He voted against the jobs bill, he opposes stem cell research, he has a 0% from NARAL (worse than any Democratic senator). Hill is possibly more conservative than Bayh, it seems like (both Hill and Ellsworth voted against the jobs bill, for example) but anything is an improvement over Ellsworth.

Durr, there's a typo in this post. Hill and Ellsworth both voted against the jobs bill, but Ellsworth unlike Hill actually voted against the 2009 stimulus package.

Ellsworth is pretty bad, but remember who he defeated in his very conservative district: John Hostettler, who is best remembered for telling a group of breast cancer survivors who met with him while he was in congress, that they may have brought their breast cancer on themselves by having abortions (even though they hadn't had them).

Oh, I don't doubt you at all. But "he's an okay get for his district" and "he's an okay get for the whole state of Indiana" are very different ideas.

Could John Mellencamp win in a write in campaign? Would he run against a Democrat selected by the Democratic Party? Has he made any statement at all? Are you tired of hearing about John Mellencamp yet?

They can run Ellsworth or Hill, at this juncture it doesn't matter. The dems here in Indiana are not happy with either of them. Democrats are demoralized here, and they're not going to vote for a retread. Between the two, Ellsworth has a better shot over Baron "this is my town hall meeting and I make the rules" Hill.
They also won't cross over and vote for Coats, (another retread) but they may cross the line for Stutzman out of frustration.
This could be Scott Brown all over again..
