Democrats have called on Anthem Blue Cross officials to testify about the 39 percent insurance rate hike their California customers have been told to expect this year.
Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Henry Waxman and Oversight Subcommittee Chairman Rep. Bart Stupak will hold a Feb. 24 hearing to examine the rate hike, which the Obama administration has called "extraordinary."
Waxman and Stupak wrote a letter to Anthem parent company WellPoint's President Angela Braly, asking for her testimony and documentation about why the increases are being imposed given WellPoint's profits. Read the letter in full here.
The committee asks Braly for internal communications, including email, about the rate hike. They also request internal presentations relating to the California increases.
They ask Braly to submit a table detailing WellPoint revenue, insurance claims, sales, general and administrative expenses and profits from 2005 through 2008. Also requested were the detailed rates and increases proposed in California from Jan. 1, 2009 through the end of 2010.
Waxman (D-CA) and Stupak (D-MI) gave Braly until Feb. 19 to submit the information.
As we have reported, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius has demanded similar justification. Sebelius also blogged on the White House Web site holding Anthem up as a reason why reform is needed.
She writes:
What's happening in California can happen in any state. It's clear that we need health insurance reform that will give American families the secure, affordable coverage they need and put a stop to insurance company abuses and control out-of-pocket costs. We're closer than ever to reforming our health insurance system. Now is the time to finish the job.
Sebelius said that while Anthem has commented to the press, "they haven't given us the full answer we deserve."

It's worth noting Sebelius was Kansas state insurance commissioner before she was governor. She knows this stuff cold.

It's worth it to see if this example can be turned into a sort of rallying cry that regular Americans can connect with and rebuild support for reform. Because it's dying right now.

I'm grateful that at least Henry Waxman is willing to look into my astronomical insurance rates here in California.
God knows the president doesn't seem to cadre.

Cadre? What's that supposed to mean?
By the way, the President's HHS secretary initiated the inquiry. That seems to indicate that the President "cadres".

its smoke and mirrors the white house doesnt give a shit about policy just passing a "bipartisan" bill.
If Obama really cared he would push the public options and meaningful cost controls and regulations. Instead we get a bill that forces everyone to buy insurance with no cost controls, or public option.
Its a bullshit bill and no one is buying it.
FYI im liberal

Anthem cleared over $2 billion in profits last quarter, and they are trying to jack my rate almost 40%! These people are criminals.
Obama should just take over Anthem Blue Cross. Disgorge their profits. Incarcerate their executives. Re-make it the California Public Insurance Option, and let it be a test case for the rest of the nation.

How can Obama and the Dems complain about this rate hike on the one hand, and yet push a bill that will force everyone in America to pay whatever these greedy bastards want on the other? The mind boggles.

While they are at it I hope they put NH in the mix to investigate...we just got our annual rate increase...63%. It is for a small business owner and purchased thro our local Trade Assoc. And the other companies came in with 50% increases....Calif is not alone. As I understand it, Mass.is coming in with 20-30% increases. Is this national?? Ray
