Sen. Al Franken (D-MN) could be beginning to let his sense of humor show itself again, after a mostly low-key tenure so far in public office. A new fundraising e-mail from the Minnesota senator displays a certain self-awareness on the part of the comedian-turned-politician about the absurdities that usually show up in these sorts of things.

The e-mail seeks to parlay Franken's opposition to the NBC-Comcast merger into some campaign contributions. "And as much as I don't trust Comcast and NBC to be honest brokers on this deal, I am trusting you to help me build support for my positions on issues like this one," Franken writes. "And as usual, by 'support' I mean 'money.'"

The e-mail also includes a graphic with the corporate logos "Comcast + NBC," contained inside a "no" symbol of a circle with a line through it. The caption declares: "Support The Vocal Opposition (ME)!" Check it out after the jump.

(Via the Star-Tribune.)

Dear _________,

You might have seen in the news, on Twitter, or on Facebook recently that I'm opposing the NBC/Comcast merger in its current form. I wanted to write you today to explain why, and to ask for your help.

I have some experience in this industry, and I flat-out don't trust Comcast and NBC to operate in the best interest of consumers in Minnesota and around the country when it comes to this merger. Combining a company who provides programming and one who provides the pipes that carry said programming would almost certainly be a raw deal for consumers and independent content producers alike.

Click here to represent your opposition to this merger by supporting the vocal opposition (me) with a small, secure grassroots donation today!

I came to Washington to stand up to the lopsided influence of special interests on behalf of middle class Minnesota families, and opposing this merger is an opportunity to do just that. And as much as I don't trust Comcast and NBC to be honest brokers on this deal, I am trusting you to help me build support for my positions on issues like this one. And as usual, by 'support' I mean 'money.'

Online grassroots donations fuel our operation, and I need your help to keep it going strong -- click here to contribute, please.

I'm not afraid of standing up to these guys -- as I said it's why I ran for the Senate. But I also realize that given the recent Citizens United decision in the U.S. Supreme Court, corporations can now turn around and spend millions running ads telling voters I want to blow up their T.V. -- a patently untrue claim that they've got no research to support, by the way. But I don't need them on my side. I want you on my side.

If you're on my side on this one, please click here to help us build a massive grassroots machine to get our message out.

Fights like this one are more than worth having, they're essential to keeping our democracy representative of people instead of corporate entities. I realize that with a lot of my positions, I'm inviting special interest groups to spend a lot of money to defeat me down the road. As long as I have you standing with me, that's ok by me -- because corporations getting their way isn't some bad medicine consumers need to swallow -- we can stand, fight, and win.

Thanks for your time today, for all you've done, and all you'll do.

Al

P.S. If you think what we're doing in the Senate - taking on Halliburton and NBC/Comcast -- is a worthwhile endeavor, please consider joining our sustainer program today -- click here for more information. And, thanks again!

I got that e-mail and had similar thoughts.
But I don't mind that much. I just heard Senate candidates have to raise $16,000 a day to compete. I'd rather Al get it from me and thee than from Xe.

I contributed to Al during the campaign and during the recount, and I will probably do so again. But don't ask for my support so you can do your job. Do your job and then ask for my support. Surely there is some piece of legislation or appointment that Franken can hold up to guarantee that the merger is denied - or he can pass a bill that institutes an Iron Wall between the parts of the company if the merger occurs.

Hang on -- if we raise a fuss when Republicans use those tactics to delay legislation and appointments, we can't ask Democrats to do likewise.

So if we are going to object to bank robbers using guns to rob a bank, then we can't arm the security guard because we object to the misuse of guns by the robbers?

The conservatives are going to raise funds to impede good government no matter what the good guys do, so the good guys better also raise funds to make the conservative efforts ineffective.

There are two panhandlers in my neighborhood. One just smiles and acts charming and expects us to guiltily give him our change when we come out of the deli. The other one, a street lady, just comes out and says, "Got a quarter?" I vastly prefer the streetlady's approach. And I always give her a quarter. Go, Al!

You surely don't think he's coming back to see if there were responses? They've been making unsubstantiated claims like this ever since the start of the recount. Every claim fell apart, every finding of fact in the court cases went Franken's way. Snarky remarks are all they have.

The fact Minnesota does not validate U.S. Citizenship when people register to vote and vote in the voting booth or by absentee ballot would open cracks in voter integrity, common sense dictates that non-citizens would slip threw those cracks.

Remember Minnesota like most states let people register to vote with nothing more than a copy of utility bill as a means of identification.

Get a copy of Minnesota's Voter Registration Form and we go over together how easy it is for a non-citizen to register to vote and then vote by absentee ballot.

This is entirely misguided opinion in combination with more unfounded assertions. If you have knowledge of illegal votes cast in Minnesota, as a good citizen you should provide this info to the authorities. Until then, you are just "makin' stuff up".

Since you asked a valid question, I will answer your question with a question.

Please explain how a copy of utility bill can prove one's citizenship?

Then forget your a Liberal and use you GOD GIVEN COMMON SENSE and think about my question before your answer, is that possible?

Liberals in the know, know that non-citizens are voting but they will never admit it to the general public. Even when a Liberal Politician like Francine Busby got caught red handed on video tape telling a group of non-English speaking Hispanics "You don't need pagers" to vote, she denied she was encouraging non-citizens to vote.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H5DmDtWr0WE&feature=related

You can watch the above video but I doubt it will have any effect on your Liberal mind. The fact is Democrats want and need non-citizens to vote to help their candidates get elected to public office.

The recount in Minnesota just recounted the ballots, it did not validation the citizenship of the person who casted that ballot.

The way the law is written in California and I'm sure it's very close to the way it's written Minnesota, and that is a citizen has to watch the non-citizen actual vote, then report this violation to the State of Elections office. That is hard to do when the non-citizen is voting by absentee ballot.

I have written more about the issue of non-citizens voting over at the Voter Suppression in 2010: It Begins Again blog by Tova Andrea Wang.

Your not even honest enough to answer my question, it shows how weak your argument truly is..

The material is the Minnesota Voter Registration Form itself, that it will accept copy of utility bill as a form of ID. I guess you expect everybody to be as honest as you when the register to vote, right?

If you call the State of Minnesota State of Elections Office you can ask them "How do you validate U.S. Citizenship when people register to vote and vote?" and "How do you validate the voter registration database for non-citizens". You can post your findings here.

So answer the question...Ms. One Way.

Please explain how a copy of utility bill can prove one's citizenship?

People this person is a Cyber Stalker, I complained about he/she stalking me around to shutdown the debate, no amount of source would suffice for this Stalker or anyone else here with a close mind.

I going to take the superior position and completely ignore this Stalker , and you people will see it follow me around the web site stalking me without debating. This Stalker can't debate my issues because it knows it will lose.

These tactics are known tactics of Liberals to avoid debate, it just proves this person is not interested in Free Speech, but Liberal Speech only and tyranny.

The only discussion I have ever had with you is the fact that within your writings you have shown yourself a serial plagiarist
(you have admitted as much) and the fact that you readily make false assertions while continually refusing to provide proof of your assertions.
I have never been nor will ever be involved in any "debate" with you, because your repeated offenses have shown your debating style lacking in integrity.

the fact that you readily make false assertions while continually refusing to provide proof of your assertions.

There are facts to back up my assertions and I have not refuse to provide my sources of my assertions, you just don't accept them.

Now you have admitted here that you are not interested in debating me, that makes you a TROLL. Your sole purpose here is to personally attack me and disrupt any debate I might have with other posters, now that is against the TOU and you know it. That makes you a TROLL!

This is my VERY LAST RESPONSE TO YOU...EVER, I will now and forever just ignore you while I'm at TPM!

Get a copy of Minnesota's Voter Registration Form and we go over together how easy it is for a non-citizen to register to vote and then vote by absentee ballot.

According to your assertion, it is "easy" for non-citizens to register and to vote. Cite your sources.

Also, just because it is "easy" (which is yet to be proven), does not logically necessitate that it actually happened.

Of course ... you could cite your sources and report the voter fraud to the authorities. You've had very substantial amounts of time to do so, yet you have chosen not to do so. Maybe you noticed, but there was a statewide recount, and the vast, vast majority of all vote records were examined in some detail.

What evidence do you have that has somehow escaped a nearly year-long investigation into Sen. Franken's election ..?

Make sure you also account for all the non-citizens that voted for Coleman, too.

Oh. BTW. If any member of the Senate deserves unconditional and unquestioning support, Sen. Al Franken is easily in the top three. Send him any and all money he requires. Al Franken will always do the right thing. In fact, I expect him to be assassinated, like Wellstone before him, for his dedication to truth, service and honor.

It takes a true patriot and an exceptionally brave man to stand in front of assassins' bullets and dare them to pull the trigger.

Get used to it: President Al Franken.

It's coming, if we are lucky. No matter how undeserving we are of such a great man serving us and our country.

I have listed my sources over at ….

But I know how easy it is by my years of research on voter fraud. I called all 50 States State of Elections Office and collect data on voter fraud.

Thank you for your questions...smile

datora wrote: Also, just because it is "easy" (which is yet to be proven), does not logically necessitate that it actually happened.

What a typical Liberal response to a very common sense question, there are people right speeding on the Highway breaking the LAW regardless if a Highway Patrol Man has caught and given them a ticket! If States don’t look into non-citizens voting, they won’t find any. Minnesota like most States don’t look into non-citizens voting because they don’t have the resources and man power to validate the voter database and States like Georgia that try to validate their database for non-citizens and dead people all of a sudden Eric Holder shows up and stops the investigation.

What we have is institutionalize corruption and these institutions refuse to validate citizenship when people vote and vote because non-citizen voting benefits the Democrats the most and that is why Democrats are against any type of Photo ID laws. All other explanations are bogus and progressive propaganda.

After all illegal aliens actually received home loans from Fanny Mae and Freddy Mac, that’s documented fact, it shouldn’t be to hard of a stretch to believe they are voting too.

Open your mind and receive the truth of the matter and suddenly it will come to you that it’s very possible that non-citizens are voting in our elections without the fear of getting caught.

But my “Common Sense” senses you are ideologue that won’t change their mind regardless of how much evidence is presented.

This isn't anything new. Franken's fundraising appeals have always had the same tone, and he raised a national record for a senate race. Maybe some people appreciate the honesty. Some people appreciate the humor. Some people appreciate humorous honesty, so their contributions count double.

Actually, it was the reupniKKKlan obstructionism that fucked us in the healthcare so that they could focus on their private wealthcare for their corporate friends.

Al Franken has delivered, in spades several times over, even after losing the first half year of his first term to crybaby coleman and the repugnican't hate machine of sore losers.

Olympia Snowe scuttled the public option.

Al Franken made it possible for rape victims to prosecute their rapists.

So, now we know: you are a rapists-rights advocate and a rape-victim suppressor.

Nice.
