White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs called out Sen. Richard Shelby (R-AL) this morning over his rare blanket hold on all of President Obama's nominees in the Senate. Reports from this morning's press gaggle are coming in, and they show a White House that is flabbergasted by Shelby today.
From DailyCaller White House reporter Jon Ward's Twitter feed from inside the gaggle:
"Gibbs on Shelby holds: "I fear there won't [b]e a greater example of silliness throughout the entire year of 2010."
More from Ward:
"Gibbs said Shelby holds are a "poster child for how this town needs to change the way it works."
We'll have more on Gibbs' statements in the gaggle shortly.
Late Update: Here's the full transcript of Gibb's remarks about the Shelby hold in the gaggle today (Provided by the White House):
Q Robert, Senator Shelby has placed a hold on 70-plus of the
President's nominees apparently until two of his earmarks get restored.
Can you comment on that?MR. GIBBS: I guess if you needed one example of what's wrong with
this town, it might be that one senator can hold up 70 qualified
individuals to make government work better because he didn't get his
earmarks. If that's not the poster child for how this town needs to
change the way it works, I fear there won't be a greater example of
silliness throughout the entire year of 2010. It is --Q Robert, can you tell us a better readout on the meeting last
night with Democratic leaders?MR. GIBBS: Hold on one second, let me just finish this. I think it
boggles the mind to hold up qualified nominees for positions that are
needed to perform functions in a government because you didn't get two
earmarks.

That's it? Gibbs should bury this guy. Shelby is also the Senator Dodd is bending over backwards for to get some shitty watered down financial regulations bill through.

The reports I've seen from other sites suggests that Gibbs called out Shelby for essentially shutting down Washington in order to get two earmarks.
Between this story and the GOP social security "privatization" plan, I think Democrats have plenty to pound the table with if they are on the ball.

The senate is silliness.
It's time for a constitutional convention. The repukes wipe their a** with the current constitution and the dems can't get sh*t done with it. Time to throw it out and start over. It was nice for 200 years until the reactionaries were able to twist it into nothing. Throw it out and let's implement a parlimentary system. Our system is broken beyond repair.
The constitution was designed to protect the aristocracy in the 13 colonies and slave owners for pete's sake. Now it is protecting the 21st century aristocracy. Let's start over.

Might as well do it your way.
After all, the document isn't even intact anymore. Just look at how Bush and Cheney shredded the Constitution to bits!!

Agreed completely, but I worry about what kind of Constitution would come out of a convention if today's Republicans were participating. In order to have a functioning democracy, we need to change from a presidential to a parliamentary system, we need proportional representation, we need to ban private campaign donations, we need fair ballot access laws, and we need a national voting system that actually records the actual votes of the actual voters.
It's hard to see how the Republicans don't manage to screw up one or more of those at a Constitutional Convention. As usual, we need better voters if we want to make any real changes.

There is already a call for a constitutional convention that has been signed on by a bunch of states. If we don't change the system, nothing will ever get done.

"Silliness"? He couldn't be more forceful than that? What Shelby is doing is NOT silliness, it's extortion and obstruction on a grand level. The WH should be suggesting that we have reached a very grave and serious turning point in our political discourse and that this is the culmination of an entire year of obstruction by the GOP and if it is not addressed our nation will be at risk. (A point which I truly believe.)
The fact is, if Shelby is not slapped down and slapped down HARD, it will only "embiggen" the rest of the GOP. And frankly, the Dems are as much to blame as the GOP by not calling them on their obstruction throughout the year. The thugs just got bolder and bolder each time Obama tried to "reach out to them." And connectionless, cowardly scumbags like Blanche Lincoln just empower the GOP more. The WH needs bitch slap Shelby and connect this to the rest of GOP.
Frankly, I don't even think this is really about the Alabama projects. I think this is just a test to see how the WH and Dems will react and then see how much further they can go.
Man, talk about a fifth column.

This language is incredibly wimpy. Why not label this as the "extortion attempt" it is? The Obama White House seems to use the label "silly" every time something outrageous happens. We Democrats should not find that acceptable. It is a Clintonian triangulation technique, an attempt to make the President seem "above" Congress which is petty. This just will never lead to the positive actions the nation needs.
Obama in this, and in the health care retreat he is orchestrating, is proving that he is already planning to be a lame duck Democratic President with a Republican Congress. He accuses Congress of thinking about the next election, but the only way to understand his passive "I'm a nice guy" approach to governance is that he is thinking only about his own survival in office, and listening to pollsters telling him really dumb things. This is a repeat of what Democratic Presidents have been doing for many years, and it will not lead important progress for the nation or ordinary Americans.
Why should Democratic activists or funders support this? It is a matter of throwing good money and trust after bad.

Excellent points. As Chisholn says below,

has not worked and will never work when dealing with the GOP.

Quite a bit stronger than "Shelby Holds are Silliness," wouldn't you say? Methinks Evan used a headline that fit his predetermined narrative.
Show me where a press flack under Bush used words like "extortion" to refere to the other party in a press conference. Gibb's response was as strong as you're likely to get from either party in these circumstances.
The jackals braying for blood here need to take a cold shower. God, what idiocy.

Silliness? He's not blowing up animal balloons, he's obstructing nominees everywhere until he gets his billions of dollars. Can't we just once play hardball? They should be calling Shelby a terrorist and an extortionist, not making him seem like Howie Mandel with a balloon over his head.

This worked soo well for Ben Nelson and the Dems. Lets hope the Tea Partiers mean what they say about their bipartisan anger. This is just extortion, and by one of the dumber men in the Senate to boot. If this doesn't end badly for the GOP, the Dems are useless.

how about blocking all funds to Alabama, and cancel all federal travel, conventions, meetings, etc. in Alabama.
and how about airports? aren't those federal enclaves?
if Shelby doesn't straighten up, close down all the airports.
he wants to play hardball, time for OBama & co. to do the same.
but no, it will never happens, since the democrats have long shown that they have no backbones.

I think Gibbs' use of "silliness" is all part of the No Drama Obama m.o. that they think is so effective and soothing.
They took the same "Oh come on you kooks" approach when health care reform died. "It's really not that big of a deal. Everyone just simmer down. Whatever."
The White House is like a wildebeest being ripped apart by a pack of dogs, and the whole time they're just saying "Hey you knuckleheads, knock it off. OK? Grow up. Let's see what we can all agree on."
Unreal. My kingdom for a Democratic Richard Shelby!

You are delusional. Extorting billions of dollars on wasteful pork and halting the filling of important nomination is really happening. You "not give it credence" is delusional. What next, don't talk about the millions who are unemployed because that would give it more credence than it deserves?

Bring up some unobtrusive nominee and let him filibuster. Let them try to make excuses and more importantly, sned the word to all Dems to make that THE only story for as long as it occurs. And when the hold is lifted, do it again. And at some point, try it with real financial regulations.

Why is Shelby getting any earmarks anyway? I don't mean this in the "I didn't know Congress is a cesspool" sort of way, but if he is going to be such a blatant a-hole about it, why not play hardball?
The pork-system needs to be changed. So why not have Dems own change as their issue, starting with the poster-child situation?
