Scott Lee Cohen, a businessman who won the Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor of Illinois in Tuesday's primary, is insisting that he will not drop out of the race. Cohen has come under fire for allegations of domestic violence, involving a 2005 arrest for allegedly holding a knife to a then-girlfriend's throat.

"I have no intention of stepping down or stepping aside," Cohen said in a statement. "When the facts come to light, after my ex-wife and ex-girlfriend speak, the people of Illinois can decide, and I will listen to them directly. I am asking my ex-wife and ex-girlfriend to come forward and to talk with the media.

"There are questions, and I will provide all answers honestly and openly. I only ask for time to do the interviews. 2005 was a difficult time in my life. I was going through a divorce, and I started running with a fast group. I was in a tumultuous relationship with the woman I was dating. We had a fight, but I never touched her. She called the police, however, she never came to court, and the charges were dismissed. I realized this relationship was not healthy, I ended it, and we parted amicably."

Gov. Pat Quinn, who won a close race in the Democratic gubernatorial primary, earlier today raised the possibility that Cohen should withdraw from the race. "If there are matters that are raised about your conduct that disqualify you from running in a proper way for an election in the fall, then the only appropriate thing is to step aside. And I think that's what we're looking at here," said Quinn.

It should be noted that while Quinn and Cohen are technically "running mates," in the sense that they will be listed together on the general election ballot in the same way that people vote for president and vice president, Quinn did not pick Cohen. Candidates for governor and lieutenant governor in Illinois are nominated in separate primaries, but then run together as a ticket in the general election.

Quinn, a former lieutenant governor who succeeded to his office a year ago after the impeachment and removal of Gov. Rod Blagojevich, won his own primary with just over 50% in a two-way race. Meanwhile, Cohen was nominated with a 26% plurality in a field of six candidates.

You weren't a teenager for crying out loud. Running with a "fast group", are we in the 1950's?

Good job Illinois.

I should add that I hold nothing against prostitutes (at least not without protection - zing!), however as a character witness, a prostitute ex-girlfriend may not be the best choice.

Gov. Quinn has acted correctly so far in not standing with Cohen. If Cohen persists in running Quinn (and, to the greatest extent their bylaws allow, the state Democrats) should endorse a third party candidate or the Republican.

Oh, hey, I misunderstood completely how this works.

The Lieutenant Governor of Illinois is the second highest executive of the State of Illinois. In Illinois, the lieutenant governor and governor run on a joint ticket, and are directly elected by popular vote.

(As TPM describes above.)

Hilarious :(

It's easy to assume otherwise. Illinois is one of the few states that retains this archaic system.

Democrats continue to dis each other doing the republicans job for them. Good to know there are still so many perfect people in the world that we can eliminate all of those that have made a mistake from representing us. I guess Clinton was the worse President in the world for not having sex with that woman or was just a man who made a bad decision.

Excuse me! The concern from Democrats isn't about the guy's "problems". It about the fact that those "problems" mean Quinn won't be reelected with him on the ticket!

Not sure if I respect this guy for his guts in sticking with it and making a feeble attempt at clearing the air or wanna hit him in the head with a hammer to knock some sense into him.

Poor Quinn. This just sucks for him.

How did no one know about this earlier? With every Republican and Tea Bagger up everyone's ass, now, you'd think someone would've called him out on it.

Absolutey.

I mean - $9.95 and an online background check for criminal history would have uncovered this information.

Let's hope a Democrat did the job - and he did not wait until the GOP released the information 2 weeks prior to the election.

Another reason for parties to vet their own nominees beforehand. thoroughly.

Obama needs to get the political side of the Democratic Party back in working order.

Obama isn't the only Democrat in the country, you know. Somebody else could do something, too.

This wouldn't be bad if Dillard won the GOP nomination, but Bradley is horrid in his own right.

His name is Brady. Quinn is a fine man and has always been a reformer. Cohen is a sleezeball who ran ads ad nauseum. Hell his stuff was all over TPM that last few weeks, on the radio, giant billboards on all the expressways. He bought the election which ought to worry anyone concerned about corporate cash in politics. And where'd he get the cash? From his payday loan operations which and pawn shops.
