Liz Cheney, daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, said today in an interview it was time for the policy banning gays in the military to end.
"It's time for it to end," she told TPMDC. "The joint chiefs, certainly the chairman of the joint chiefs, has been clear about that and I think that the country really is at a place now where it's time for it to end."
Cheney also left the door open a crack to run for president down the line, though she said it's not her focus. She said the "Draft Cheney" movement here at the Conservative Political Action Conference proves that conservatives have injected fresh energy into the 2012 field.
TPMDC caught up with Cheney this afternoon following her speech to CPAC. We chatted briefly about President Obama's new offensive in Afghanistan terrorism - which she's been talking about through her new Keep America Safe group and the political landscape of 2010.
She said it might have been the wrong decision to mirandize the shoe bomber in 2001, but that she still vehemently opposed Obama's national security policies.
The transcript is below.
Q: What's your take on Obama's Afghanistan offensive and the capture of Taliban leaders?
A: It's clearly a positive thing, it's a good thing that we've sent additional troops in, it's a good thing when we capture Taliban leaders obviously, and I think that General McChrystal is a tremendous officer. I worry though when we capture these leaders that we no longer have the option of using any of the enhanced interrogation techniques because the president took those off the table. When you've got people in captivity we'd like our CIA officials in particular to have the capacity to do more than just ask the terrorists to please tell us what they want.
Q: What's your take on Don't Ask Don't Tell?
It's time for it to end. The joint chiefs, certainly the chairman of the joint chiefs, has been clear about that and I think that the country really is at a place now where it's time for it to end.
Q: What's the difference between mirandizing Richard Reid and Abdulmultallab?
Richard Reid was apprehended back in December of 2001 and we had not yet established this new system of military commissions. The possibility of putting him through one of these commissions simply didn't exist. We hadn't set them up, the Supreme Court and Congress hadn't participated in it yet, so I think you can look back on that and say should we have done it differently, and maybe we should have, but that certainly shouldn't provide any comfort to the Obama administration in the aftermath of an attack where they interrogated the guy for less than an hour and then told him he had the right to remain silent. When they bring it up it's because they are trying to divert attention from their own mistake.
Q: What do you think of the 2012 field?
We've got a great field, I suspect you'll see others. I listened to Marco Rubio's speech this morning and I thought he was phenomenal. We do have a lot of young new faces for us. I think it is going to be an exciting several years at least for us.
Q: What do think of the draft Cheney movement for your dad?
I understand it but people are really interested in finding somebody who believes in conservative values and I think my dad was pretty clear he's not going to be the one but we've got a lot of good candidates out there and a lot of energy in the movement as you can see by the good turnout.
These Draft Cheney stickers don't have a first name on them I noticed.
A: I suppose that's true. (Laughs)
But this is really about the ideas and about the substance and people who care a lot about their country and want to stop these dangerous policies, that's really what we're focused on .
Q: Would you consider running?
A: Right now really my plate is full raising my kids and helping my dad with his book. Maybe one day, we'll see.

Draft Cheney - of course he'll just get five deferments and get his wife pregnant again if need be to avoid answering the call.
Who is Liz Cheney and why is she an authority on anything let alone having any perceived gravitas to criticize the President.
And wasn't it Dick who said "Deficits don't matter"? That is a great conservative message? Or do they only matter when a Democrat is in office?

Strange how the statements of Cheney changed after his daughter came out - in favor of changing the rule. And - - of course he is no longer the President and his assistant, George Bush has no power either. So he gets a freebie on this one. On the other hand, Cheney gets no pass from me one way or the other because he ditched serving so many times. He is surely no expert on the military since he so assiduously avoided serving. Some patriot, eh?

Strange? No, it is commonly the case that having a family member or close friend who is gay is a significant factor in people's perception of gay people. You can't really buy into the dehumanizing stereotypes when they're being applied to someone you love and admire.
I think one of the big things that has led to the turn of the tide in public opinion that we are seeing over the last decade or so is that so many gays have come out of the closet, and especially gays in the public eye. Call it the Doogie Howser effect.

Okay, so actually she saved Dick Cheney from having to go to Vietnam by being born. But, hey, given the near certainty that he would have been killed by his own troops had his sperm not done their part in his effort to avoid serving his country in a war he supported, it amounts to the same thing.

Liz Cheney for president in 2012! She's qualified for GOP: no experience as an elected official though she spouts party rhetoric and lies like hell (she has complete disregard for the truth). She's never been in the military, but is courageous enough to start one, and doesn't flinch at the prospect of torture, as long as she is pouring the water, and doing the enhanced procedures. And lastly, Her Dad was president (in reality, though not officially), just like George W. Bush. She gets allowances from the right people and will carry their water for them. And the right to remain silent means that he wont incriminate himself. But the 200 or so passengers on the train the burning pants and the fact that he said he did it is more than enough to convict him. Dope. It's not whether we can CONVICT him. Sure a lot of people on the plane SAW him. But can they testify WHY he did it? Maybe he was just a suicidal crazy. Would that be terrorism?
What about who he met with before he boarded the plane? If he is not mirandized, then anyone else they find will be "fruit of the poisoned tree," and they can't convict THEM either.
Or do you not care if these guys are actually found guilty? Putting people behind bars indefinitely because of hearsay is just exactly what we did at Gitmo, and now we're stuck in that tar pit. Can't try them, can't let them go.

I think you guys are talking past each other. But the point is not so much whether the person arrested can be convicted as it is what information can be gleaned from him about other plots and would-be bombers and saboteurs. The question is how best to get the most information out of each person you apprehend. The Cheney group thinks the only way to get information out of people is to torture them; those of us on the other side are saying that the evidence is that torture is actually counter-productive in addition to being immoral, and that skilled interrogators can actually elicit much more information by gaining the subject's trust.

If I remember correctly what I have read and heard on this subject, there have been hundreds of convictions on terrorism-related charges in civilian courts, with many of the convicted serving sentences of 20 or 30 years, or even life. There have been 3 convictions in trials under military convictions, all of whom have now been released from custody. (At least one of those, I think, was not convicted, and one or both of the others received relatively short sentences and have now been released.)

This is the kind of softball interview I'd expect on Fox not TPM . Liz Cheney mouthed the falsehood that the Christmas bomb plotter was Mirandized less than an hour after his capture.
* Liz also floated the B.S. that the Mirandizing of the shoe bomber was different because the system of military commissions didn’t exist at the time. But Liz’s pop has conceded that he could have been placed in military custody, and the claim is bogus for other reasons, too.
I expect TPM interviewers to be better prepared to challenge these talking points that have been debunked for awhile now.

Just to reinforce your point, Bush created the framework for military commissions in November 2001, one month before Reid's attempted shoe-bombing:

Liz Cheney wanting to get rid of DADT is symbolic. I remember years ago, the Rev. James Forbes of the Riverside Church in NYC commenting that many religous people were anti-gay and very homophobic until someone in their family came out. Once it was someone they knew and loved and realized that being gay does not make you any different as a human being, they changed their views. So many homophobic people are this way simply because their church told them what to think. One of the good things about progressive religion is that it actually encourages critical thinking.

If she didn't have a sister who was gay and violated every prohibition these christianist morons hold sacred (like having kids between two lesbos), I might have some respect for them. But it's just like Sarah Palin who didn't give a rat's ass about retarded kids or retarded people in general (show me her record that speaks otherwise) until she decided to bring one into this world (again on her christianist beliefs), and now she's god's anointed spokesman for political correctness. If you ask me, they're all a bunch of F*ckin' Retarded lying Crooks!

Sure would have been nice if the Cheney family had come out against DADT back when, you know, they still had some kind of power to do something about it.
Oh well. I guess even if this seems a little dishonest to me, if this gives cover to Republican senators to vote for a DADT repeal it'll be a good thing anyway.
