Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), under fire in a GOP primary for his support for the bailout, is now claiming, inaccurately, that Barack Obama joined him in suspending his presidential campaign to address the 2008 financial crisis.
As we told you, the Arizona Republic reported Monday on an interview its editorial board had conducted with the senator:
McCain said Bush called him in off the campaign trail, saying a worldwide economic catastrophe was imminent and that he needed his help. "I don't know of any American, when the president of the United States calls you and tells you something like that, who wouldn't respond," McCain said. "And I came back and tried to sit down and work with Republicans and say, 'What can we do?' "
In fact, of course, McCain returned to Washington of his own volition. And in an interview with TPM today outside the Senate chamber, McCain acknowledged as much -- but also appeared to try to drag Obama into the mess.
"[Bush] didn't ask me to suspend my campaign," said McCain. "I suspended my campaign -- as did Senator Obama -- to come back to Washington because the President had told me that we were in a world financial collapse. That's why I did what I did. I always said that consistently."
It's true that Obama went to Washington to join McCain, Bush, and congressional leaders for a White House meeting on the crisis, which, according to multiple accounts, was engineered by McCain. But unlike McCain, Obama never announced he was suspending his campaign. Quite the opposite, in fact: After McCain's announcement, Obama said he still planned to show up for the presidential debate that Friday, arguing that a president needed to be able to do two things at once.
Asked whether he remembered things the way McCain did, Steve Hildebrand, who ran the Obama campaign's field operation, told TPM: "Nope. We proceeded directly ahead, pointing out along the way that McCain was incapable of doing two things at once."
As for his own decision, McCain acknowledged to TPM that he may have given the Republic a different impression about the role Bush played in it. "If I mischaracterized it, or misstated, fine," he continued. "But I have consistently said, ever since the beginning, at the time, that I was coming back because I was told by the President of the United States that we were on the verge of a financial crisis."
Yesterday, Brooke Buchanan, a spokeswoman for the senator, told us the Republic had mischaracterized McCain's comments in the interview. She said that McCain had in fact told the paper only that President Bush had called McCain while the senator was campaigning, to inform him about the crisis -- not that Bush had "called him in off the campaign trail."
McCain is fending off a Republican primary challenge from the conservative former congressman J.D. Hayworth, who has criticized the senator for his support for the bailout. In his interview with the Republic, McCain also tried to play defense on that issue, claiming that he was misled by Henry Paulson and Ben Bernanke into believing that the bailout would focus on the housing market, not Wall Street.

McCain is now officially senile.
Obama NEVER suspended his campaign. One of the reasons why Obama's poll numbers INCREASED during that time is because McCain looked frantic when the economy was falling apart and Obama looked calm and in control because he didn't suspend his campaign and said he was going to debate.

you are correct, president sham-wow never suspended his campaign, even after he was elected, even after he took office, even now he is still campaigning. he is a great campaigner. one could argue that is all he knows how to do. he certainly is not a good manager, or executive, or president. he knows less about economics then a 3 year old. i wouldn't let him run the local mcdonalds. he is so self-absorbed he doesn't even notice how self-absorbed his vice-president is.

You must read "Game Change" and you will see how clueless and pathetic McCain was during that whole mess.
1. That Washington summit was ALL McCain's idea. Bush didn't want it and went along with it to help Mr. Maverick.
2. During the summit, McCain was clearly out of his depth.
3. Bush was furious saying "McCain insisted on this thing but just sat there like a bump on a log."
4. Paulson & Bernanke were furious at McCain's stunt and thought he was dumb as a box of hair.
5. Based on what they said, I bet that and Paulson, Bernanke did not vote for McCain.

And none of this is really news -- it was reported at the time, or shortly afterward. I haven't read "Game Change," but I knew all of this anyway. Does McCain really not remember, or does he think none of the rest of us will? Once the late night talk show hosts seized on it (and boy, did they, especially Letterman, who had gotten stood up by McCain on the false pretext of having to leave immediately for Washington), it was sort of permanently impressed on the national consciousness.

Well, it happened more than three weeks ago, so as far as the MSM knows, McCain's version of events versus the contemporaneously documented facts of record is just matter of two equally valid points of view. Up to the reader to decide which is correct. Not their job to pick sides, after all.

As for the rest of us? Just like all the other ReThuglicans, he doesn't give a whit whether Americans remember what happened two days ago ... just lie, lie, lie. Repeat it often enough, and there will be plenty of Americans who buy it hook, line and sinker.

This has been a standard line of his every time he's been caught in a "misstatement." And media "heavy weights" like the late Tim Russert just let him get away with it.
"Oh, he admitted he misspoke. No need to take it farther." I want to see David Shuster say, "Senator, you have a history of misstating over and over. Why should we let you get away with it yet again?" But noooo. He's a darling of corporate media ownership, so he get a free pass over and over and over.

McCain did one honorable act in his life and even that was the minimum needed to fulfill his duty as an Officer and a Gentleman.
The rule for POWs is first in, first out. You simply don't accept a line jump for an early release. McCain who was at that point the son of the Commander in Chief of the Pacific or CINCPAC, the top military officer in the Pacific and so a tremendous propaganda asset for the N. Vietnamese refused special treatment and early release and was punished for it.
Okay great. But he was a shitty pilot before that and an even shittier Midshipman at Annapolis befor that and a guy that ditched his long suffering wife for a younger, more beautiful, richer, more politically connected trophy wife and never looked back. This guy has been riding one instance of doing his sworn duty for four decades now. It is not like he was the only POW in history that upheld his oath as best he could.

The more McCain and Hayworth try to out-crazy each other, the closer Arizona gets to electing its first Democratic Senator since 1994.

Dems are running nobody. I guess one could hope they have a top tier candidate that they are keeping secret so McCain feels safe tacking hard right, and then will spring a top tier moderate Dem on him who can then challenge him on his far right remarks and how he stands for nothing other than getting/staying elected.

If Obama hadn't tabbed Napolitano for his cabinet, I'd definitely agree with you. But what few prominent Democrats there are still in Arizona are either running for re-election to their current offices or running for Governor. None entered the Senate race because they all thought (understandably so) that McCain would win easily, and now it's probably too late.
I'm not even sure Napolitano could win it at this point, given the damage to her rep from the Christmas Bomber incident.

What damage is that?
The reason Janet is not running for McCain's seat, is the budget mess in Arizona. I'm not saying she made the mess, but she can certainly be smeared with it. Besides she probably likes her new job just fine.
I like Janet, but she is a careerist.

Maybe there's something to this senility speculation. If he thinks that pinning the same conduct on Obama that he's losing Tea Bagger votes over is a winning communications strategy, he really is losing his stuff. Not that he had much all along.

McCain: "I suspended my campaign -- as did Senator Obama -- to come back to Washington because the President had told me that we were in a world financial collapse."
Suspending his campaign, like selecting Palin as his running mate and ALL of his economic "proposals", was just another gimmick from McCain.
At this point, it is so obvious how lucky we all are that this sad clown was NOT elected POTUS.

It's not that I want McCain to lose, but damn if it isn't enjoyable for him to get called on his BS. Sans Palin and the campaign suspension he had a real chance of winning because no one, and I mean no one was calling him out.
It brings a smile to see McCain exposed for who he truly is, a stoooooopid lying sack of crap only interested in John McCain.

McCain: "But I have consistently said, ever since the beginning, at the time, that I was coming back because I was told by the President of the United States that we were on the verge of a financial crisis."
I need to fix this for him...

Gee, I am old, but even I remember that McCain supposedly called Obama and ASKED him to suspend his campaign and then without waiting for a reply went out to say that he (McCain) was, which he did (but not until after he appeared on CBS News and lied to Letterman). His old campaign staffers must be aghast.
Now for the total lack of responsibility, he admitted that he had not read the really long (3 page) Paulsen Plan!
Per Joe Wilson: he lied! Will AZ voters finally wake up to the reality of what the GOP is doing to their state (for the record, I was born / raised there).
The DSCC needs to seriously finance the DEM Candidate ?Glassman in AZ!!!

It appears to me that McCain is desperate. He's throwing any lie he can against the wall to see what sticks, but so far, his hands are getting dirtier and he's reeking of feces. He does to himself better than Karl Rove did it to him. I'm so happy watching this guy self destruct.

He's been a liar as long as he's been in the public eye. Did he lie to the Viet Cong? Or did he lie about lying to the Viet Cong?

WOW, what a genius group of individuals on this site commenting about McCain. I am assuming you all have minds of steel and can remember every word in every order of every detail of your entire 70+ years! Impressive- I however, will continue to support and vote for McCain. Just in case you missed, he has been in Washington fighting for OUR Nation's security, fighting against the mounting deficit and fighting against govt run heatlhcare. McCain may not be as perfect as you like but his desire to serve this Country for the best should never be questioned

John McCain is running against a guy in Arizona who has squash for brains, even earned the title in Congress as "dumbest member of Congress" not to mention others such as biggest boozer, biggest blowhard. We are not going to let ourselves be represented by someone with such poor ethical standards. JD Hayworth needs to find a job in which his actions do not affect the American People.

I am SO glad this guy was the reThuglican nominee in '08.
