A new national survey from Public Policy Polling (D) suggests that Democrats should go ahead and pass major initiatives such as health care reform and allowing gays to serve in the military. If they don't pass these things, the poll suggests, the people who are against it won't vote for them anyway.

The poll's top-line finds 37% of Americans saying they definitely will not vote Democratic for Congress this fall, 34% will definitely vote for the Dems, and the remainder are up for grabs. The poll shows that 50% oppose the health care bill, with 39% for it -- thanks to a 94%-1% opposition among the people who won't vote Democratic. The poll also found a 54% majority in favor of gays in the military, to 37% against it, with people who will or potentially could vote Democratic favoring it 72%-24%, and those who won't vote Democratic opposing it by 59%-25%.

"Congressional Democrats really need to decide if they're going to let their agenda be dictated by voters who won't support them no matter what they do," writes PPP communications director Tom Jensen. "These numbers provide pretty clear evidence that most of the voters opposed to health care and repeal of DADT will not consider voting Democratic even if the party decides not to move on those issues."

They don't have 60 votes in the Senate. They accepted that framing and can't get the American people to understand that it is Republican obstructionism that is breaking the Senate.

I think Obama might need to do a prime time presser to get the point across. Dems only had 60 votes for what five months? Franken was sworn in on July 7th 2009 giving the Dems their 60th Senator. Ted Kennedy died August 25th and Kirk wasn't sat to September 24th.

And even when the Dems had 60 seats they had Lieberscum and Nelson threatening filibusters. 58 seats and 58 votes wasn't enough for the Republicans. Bring out charts showing how the GOP used the cloture vote more times in one year than any other President faced in their four years or even eight years.

Obama is correct in demonstrating patience and doing it publicly and openly, he looks bigger than both parties in congress. Now all he needs to do is tell the Thugs he has a starting point for negotiations, you don't show up and we will use Reconciliation to get everything we want. Just moving the conversation forward and getting that oh so precious and overexposed "win" will make the Thugs look as small as they are. Very Lincolny (TM) if you ask me. Moving the repeal of DADT is icing on the cake. Congressional Dems need to get their shit together and the embittered PUMAs/Clintonistas need to shut up and get a life.

"Congressional Democrats really need to decide if they're going to let their agenda be dictated by voters who won't support them no matter what they do . . ."

That's been the approach so far. It's been mirrored by attempts to reach out to Republicans in the White House and the Senate. And a lot of good it's done.

Why not fight for what you believe in, get the best you can, show the voters you have courage and cojones, and let the voters decide? If you lose, you go out with a clear conscience knowing you did the right thing (and probably got some long-lasting achievements in the process). But chances are, you're going to make it more likely you'll win because voters will see you have character, principles and integrity.

The only logical answer to your question is that they don't believe in much of anything.

Because most politicians are spineless and care more about holding on to their position of power than actually using it to accomplish some good. And politicians who face even remotely threatening re-election opponents don't want to take chances and give their opponents any ammunition.

Duh. They needed a poll to tell them this? Dems are just brain dead. They put all this stuff into bills to get repuke votes and they get none, so why do it in the first place. Pathetic.

I agree, Michael A.

What in God's name do these people think they were elected to do?

It boggles the mind that they would just let the healthcare bill sit and molder after the year of bloodletting we've been through.

A small suggestion for those who want to exert pressure on obstructionist Dems. Write to the DNC and the DSCC saying you won't contribute until those organizations pledge that NO money will go to Dems who threaten to filibuster Dem legislation (Ben Nelson). I threw in Blanche Lincoln's name, too, as an opponent of HRC.

Why should we give money to people who work against our interests, regardless of their party?

Exactly my thoughts. That they conducted a poll to determine this borders on astonishing.

Look Congressional Democrats - Rasmussen has Obama at 50 percent approval, so he's probably at around 55. Guess what? That makes him a POPULAR president!

He's a hell of a lot more popular than any of those congressional shitheads, that's for damn sure.

A large fraction of those who oppose the current bill are opposing it from the LEFT - they think it doesn't go far enough.

I disagree. You have to distinguish between the Senate and the House.

The Senate is the body that has to agree to reconciliation measures. That's where pressure from the citizenry can make a difference. Call your senator. (I've called Senator Kerry several times, and I did not neglect Scott Brown, whom I will call but whom I already e-mailed, telling him to vote for the healthcare reform bill in reconciliation.)

This poll confirms what has been obvious to most of us in the thinking portion of the Democratic party for a long time, but will probably come as news to a great many members of Congress.

Hope this puts some starch in their spines to do what is right for the country. The country actually wants the policies that Democrats propose.

The Dems have no clue. Day after day I see Dem spokespeople fail miserably at the sound bite game on teevee when it would be so easy, with so much ammunition to absolutely destroy conservatives, yet they don't. Day after day. How hard would it be to drum a phrase like 'country club conservative' into the public's mind? Not very hard, yet the simple things always escape this Party. Could these talking heads hammer the fact that the Repukes are responsible for about 80% of the deficit? Sure, it would be easy....but they don't. Is it so hard to splice together contradictory statements by Repukes on almost any subject for boffo political ads? Naw, but the desire is lacking apparently. It's hard to believe that smart people can't see these things, can't find a plan of action to take advantage.....maybe the really don't want to?

They need to hire an elite ad agency. Really, they do. They are pathetic at messaging and marketing.

Why not just ask the Reps who they're for: Obama or Osama?

It's a stupid question, so it's right at their level.

Poll on the Tea Bagger movement:

'But both surveys also yield evidence that most Americans know little or nothing about the movement, and some additional results suggest that those who are only "somewhat" supportive hold positions that may be at odds with those frequently associated with the movement. Here is more from the ABC News report:'

Tons of ammo for Dems here that they won't use.

No, no, no! It makes much more sense for Obama and Congressional Democrats to ignore the people who put in so much volunteer time and effort to get them elected, and instead desperately seek the support of people who hate them, and us.

"They are pathetic at messaging and marketing."

You've hit the nail on the head. I believe the vast majority of Dems are people who are innately suspicious of marketing and advertising, and believe that in a perfect world it would be unnecessary to resort to such crude hucksterism to persuade people. Simple, plain, cold facts and logic should be enough. My parents were emblematic of this attitude, and so are most of the Dems I know, most of whom are or were educators, creatives, librarians, university or gov't employees, or self-employed consultants who engage in active marketing with the greatest reluctance.

By contrast, Republicans, coming mostly from the business class, come to politics having already embraced marketing, and pursue it gleefully and zestfully, regardless of what sort of lies and horseshit they're peddling. It's just part of normal business to them, and so they run rings around Democrats in the area of marketing, positioning, and messaging. Unfortunately, Obama and his "brain trust" are just as clueless as the rest of them.

It is pretty simple. Let us put the health care bill to vote. If the bill is not passeed, people will know who are against it. If the people did not like the failure to pass, they will get a chance to unseat those incumbents who did not vote. Isn't that democracy?

Why not put Public Option to vote which the majority of the American people favor, pass it by reconciliation, and gain back the popularity in the poll that, it seems, senators and the administration love.

Any compromise with GOP or any effort to pass one of the two bills or their combination by reconciliation will be considered offensive and arrogant by the American people because they do not like these bills or combinations.

Since when 59 votes or even 51 votes became smaller than 41 votes? The administration and the Congress seem to be in a trance and not bold enough to try to pass the bill, and 45,000 people are dying every year because of lack of health insurance.
