Rand Paul has a new ad in the Kentucky Republican Senate primary, slamming his rival Trey Grayson for having voted for Bill Clinton in 1992, and alleging that Grayson and President Obama are "dangerous allies." Grayson's spokesman fired back, the Lexington Herald-Leader reports -- by slamming Rand Paul for supporting his father, Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX).

The Paul ad blasts Grayson on national security. "He admitted to voting for draft-dodger Bill Clinton," the announcer says. "Worse, listen to what Grayson said about Barack Obama."

The ad then cuts to video of a video statement that Grayson reportedly made in January 2009, in honor of President Obama's inauguration. "I look forward to doing my part as Secretary of State, and as a citizen, to working with President Obama..." Grayson says, before the video quickly cuts away to the announcer's voice.

"Trey Grayson -- dangerous allies," the announcer says.

"Kentuckians deserve to know who Rand Paul voted for in the 1988 presidential campaign, when he was the top aide for Ron Paul's pro-choice, anti-Reagan campaign for president," said Grayson spokesman Nate Hodson. "Or, who he voted for in the 2008 Republican Presidential primary, when he campaigned across the country for his dad's shut-down-Gitmo, legalize-marijuana, cut-and-run-in-Iraq-and-Afghanistan, blame-America-for-9/11 campaign for president."

Rand Paul told the paper that he did indeed support his father, though he doesn't agree with him on everything: "It's hard for me to imagine anyone not voting for his own father. Trey must have different family values than I do if he's questioning me voting for my dad."

Here's the Paul ad:

These are people who elected Jim Bunning. And they're trying to reach them with REASON?

Kentucky 1992 Presidential election results:

Clinton 44.55%
Bush 41.34%
Perot 13.66%

Is it really a good idea to bash your opponent for doing something a plurality of the population did? I mean, then you're bashing a plurality of the population.

Oh, wait, I forgot, Republican primary.

I assume Grayson would have also voted for draft dodger Dick Cheney - I wonder why that wasn't included in the ad...

Do you think one of these guys can replace Jim Bunning? What is so insane is that one of them probably will, and will be an improvement.

Wow, Nate Hodson (Trey Grayson's spokesman) sure has an interesting spin on our elected representatives who dare to actually adhere to the Constitution once they're elected. The nerve of such people!

Only one problem with the story and that would be that Ronald Reagan did not run in 1988. Reagan ran unsuccessfully in 1976, 1980 (win) and 1984 (win) It was George Bush Sr. in 1988, so I am not sure what they mean by Ron Paul running an anti-Reagan campaign. Just the opposite, as Ron Paul was one of the first and only U.S. Representatives to endorse Reagan for President in 1976 when everyone else was going with Ford. Hmmm....and as I recall the Republican nominee in 2008 (McCain) was and still is for shutting down Gitmo. Still there is more, I think Trey Grayson's hero (Bill Clinton) was for legalizing Marijuana (Ron Paul is not, only that he believes it shouldbe left up to the states) and if I remember right Ron Paul voted for the war in Afghanistan, but not Iraq because he said there was no proof of weapons of mass destruction. Which there wasn't.

I've seen pictures of Rand Paul's wife and kids but not Trey Grayson's. Is he keeping them hidden or hasn't he married? Just wondering...

"Trey Grayson -- dangerous allies," the announcer says.

So, a citizen supporting the President of The United States is a dangerous alliance?

One can never underestimate the entertainment value of the Republican Party.

I noticed the video above says "Rand Paul Strong National Defense", but Paul's wikipedia entry doesn't mention military service.

But after all he's a Republican.

I live in Kentucky and this political season is going to be especially stomach churning. I just hope the dem candidates are paying attention. They should let these wingnuts rip each other apart and then replay their attacks in the general election. The dems on the other hand should take the stand that KY doesn't need another obstructive NO vote. Kentucky needs someone who can work with the President and help guide legislation. I personally like Jack Conway the AG. He has a good record for cracking down on special interests (price gouging by oil companies) and reducing fraud in government programs. I think if he runs on those two principals he could get some swing voters. Don't forget Mitchy saggy bags narrowly won reelection and has been an absolute embarrassment ever since. Most of Kentucky is ready to redeem ourselves.
