Rep. Darrell Issa told TPMDC today he would be happy to co-sponsor Rep. Paul Ryan's budget "roadmap" which privatizes Social Security and creates a voucher system for Medicare, saying it it a "much better" approach than President George W. Bush took in 2005.
We interviewed Issa (R-CA) at the Conservative Political Action Conference today, asking about the budget plan which former Majority Leader Dick Armey and others say is a smart plan to end the deficit.
"Paul Ryan did a very good job of teeing up the only possibilities. It's not like we want to do any of those, but the fact is there has to be enough income for the outflow and that's going to include potential changes in age, in means testing and in fact in how we collect revenue all of that has to be part of it," Issa said.
"It's a much better approach than what President Bush did a number of years ago which was to talk about a change, as though a change was the answer rather than an actuarial reality that not enough money goes in for the amount going out," Issa said.
Watch the interview:
He also said that it's Minority Leader John Boehner's job to get consensus on how the GOP should present its ideas, but said it's also important to consider ideas such as Ryan's coming from individual members.
We also asked about the Draft Cheney movement and Issa offered a one-liner.
"Well he's young, he's rested, and if he puts his guns away and goes to work, I'll vote for him," Issa quipped.

Issa is the guy who initiated the recall of California's Dem governor, Gary Davis. Davis was about as popular as cancer of the rectum, and Issa viewed himself as a shoe-in for the Gov job as he led the charge. He was usurped by Arnold, who immediately erased any memory of Issa (not a mean feat anyway) and the rest is history.
Issa is just one of many famous turd republicans who have crawled out of Cali on and off thru the years...jokes like Rohrerbacher, and 'B-1' Bob and now some of the creepy ones running for senate and governor..take your pick.
Issa, jockeying for publicity will jump on any bandwagon if he can get a microphone. Or a penis, if it was wrapped with a ten dollar bill.

Let's bring back the 90% tax rate.
I don't think that would happen, and I'm not even sure if I would like it to happen, but if lame-ass yahoos keep saying "privatize social security" or "abolish medicare" as the only solutions to the budget crisis, then someone needs to inject an equally effective option from the other side to balance out the crazy.
A bigger tax rate on the wealthy (roll back the Bush tax cuts, or the Reagan tax cuts) is a real solution, and might even look reasonable to red-staters if they stare at the possibility of a 90% rate for the wealthy long enough.

It's not like Social Security is all that generous. Last I looked at the Social Security website, the average monthly check was $1050, which would barely pay the rent in my area.
All we need to do is raise the cap so higher wage earners pay the same rate as everybody else.

Yeah, they are a great alternative to Dems as long as they don't have to say what they would actually do, given a chance. It's not like McCain (and all the other GOP candidates, and GWB) didn't test drive all these ideas with no success. Even Reagan couldn't gut Medicare and Social Security, and he had attacked Medicare as socialism back in the 60s and managed to con Californians to giving up full funding of state colleges in favor of fees (read tuition).

Social security is not creating the deficit....quite the opposite. And privatizing social security will by definition put EVERYONE's retirement money in the hands of the bankers....and we've all seen how that is working out.
Privatizing social security is the most hair brained idea.... A base rule for personal investment planning - DIVERSIFICATION. Privatizing social security places even more eggs in the risky banker and stock market basket....at least keep some of Americas retirement money out of the hands of the greedy & crooked stock markets. Repugs don't call it a tax if "private industry" collects it. So toll roads =bad, private toll roads =good. Medicare for all =bad, letting insurance companies bleed us all dry =good.

The republicans are just plain silly. If they simply sit back and say no, Obama will implement all their agenda for them. He has proposed an "automatic IRA", which is nothing if not the first step in "privatizing" SS. His debt commission is tasked with finding ways to cut SS and medicare both. What more do the republicans want? Perhaps they want credit for starting the ball rolling.

The auto IRA isn't to replace social security but supplement it, since even under the best circumstances social security can't pay for a good retirement long term. It is a well documented fact that more people participate and save a lot more on average when they are automatically enrolled in IRAs and have to opt out than when they opt in, without noticing the slightly lower take home. A lot of state institutions already do this or something like it because it works, and it is all but universal in Europe.
If you think you could ever get by on SS alone, you haven't been paying attention (or you really like the idea of moving to Mexico or El Salvador)

Since the arrival of RWR and his side kick Alan G. Congress has been including Social Security in the Federal budget to hide over spending by Congress . Also WallStreet has wanted to lay hands on the S.S. funds since it's inception so there has been a public assualt on S.S. by the GOP to frighten the public in to thinking S.S. is in serious trouble . But any intelligent person will deduce from this that if S.S. is in serious trouble why is Congress still using the S.S. funds to hide over spending ? Near the end of last year (a few months ago) Congress announced there was zero inflation to reduce the S.S. payouts which favors hiding even more over spending . To Congress there may have been zero inflation but to Seniors and other S.S. recipients the cost of existing has out paced their income . Now that Congress has pegged the S.S. recipients with a zero COST OF LIVING increase this week they announced an increase in inflation . The Truth ! S.S. has nothing to do with the condition of the budget . Conclusion ! We have a lying Congress and colluding media .

This is interesting opportunity for Democrats and progressives to use the fear card on the elderly and turn the tables on the GOP as they have done on healthcare reform. The main difference however Dems and progressives will not have to make up lies such as "Death Panels". One would have to merely point out if this republican plan was in effect over the last decade when it was originally introduced where would our social security savings be at this point, that the Dow is hovering around 10000 like it did at the beginning of the decade. Secondly republican plan goes against the golden rule of retirement and investment planing... diversification. Essentially the republicans are trying to place all our(national) retirement plan into one basket.

The privatization method would be for the very young along with bringing the retirement age out a year or two. It also would help if any new citizens would have to pay into the system for a longer time before they become eligible for benefits. This is a time for ideas from both parties.

No surprise there. Issa is a major capitalist (DEI) and politician who represents the standard conservative capitalist program, a key element of which is oposition to collectivization of old age benefits. Good ol' 19th century/early 20th capitalism. Push comes to shove, Obama and many Democrats are amenable to "reforms" in that direction, especially with regard to Social Security. They just haven't figured out the vehicle for accomplishing it yet, so keep throwing up commissions in the hopes that 'indpendent' propaganda about the "crisis" will finally take hold.

His district is in north San Diego County, right next door to the old Randy 'Duke 'Cunningham district. Cunningham's seat is now held by repub Brian Bilbray, who didn't actually live there, but who's mom did, so he used that address to establish residency in order to run.
He's been a total flake on health care reform. Was initially seen as a moderate Repub, but after election, completely steps in time to the leadership.
Down the road is the district of ex "in the pocket of the military industrial complex" Repub rep Duncan Hunter, who somehow didn't get touched by the Randy 'Duke' Cunningham scandal, but interestingly enough, resigned his seat soon after.
His son , Duncan Hunter Jr (of the 'what if they let the hermaphrodites in?' fame was elected to fill the older Duncan Hunter's seat.
All of these guys are completely out of touch with the public. They rarely even show up in their districts, but rest on the coattails of San Diego's Republican machine. lots of people here who have made insane amounts of money and want to keep it that way. as a whole though, the urban areas are trending democratic w/regard to votes. i

I imagined that Google had brought up Issa's personal site.
Then I saw the headline "Social justice, social protection and social security."
Social justice? Darryl Issa?!
Then I looked at the top of the screen. It said "ISSA International Social Security Association."
ROTF...

Issa is the slimeball rich corrupt criminal background sleazo who along with Grover Norquist started the recall of Governor Gray Davis of California supposedly because Davis said the state was in trouble and we needed to rethink some taxes. In reality he wanted to run for governor. His crooked past came out so he had to bow out. But like all rotten Republicans he's never gone for long.
