Remember how Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid predicted there'd be a vote on a jobs bill today? Well, maybe that was a bit premature.

Two major obstacles now stand between Democrats and the jobs package they'd like to pass before next week's President's Day recess: A ton of snow, and equally substantial GOP obstructionism. The question is: which will thaw first?

The snow has pushed the Senate floor schedule back at least a day--a significant amount of time given the crowded nature of the calendar. But Democrats still don't have enough votes to overcome a filibuster, and unless they can win over at least one Republican, they may adjourn this coming weekend empty-handed.

What's the hang up? Republicans are working with Democrats on one key aspect of the legislation: tax breaks for employers who hire new employees. But beyond such a measure, Republicans are balking at supporting a full package. And with Democrats now one vote shy of a 60-vote supermajority, they will need one GOPer to break ranks if they want the package to overcome a filibuster.

So far, Democratic rhetoric has been gentle. Last week, Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) said "You need two to tango. And you need Republicans for bipartisanship."

"Hope is prospective," he said. "We don't have bipartisanship at this moment. I hope we'll have it in a matter of minutes, hours, days."

Days later, they still don't have it. Which makes you wonder if and when leadership will pivot to directly call out Republicans for unanimously filibustering a jobs relief package when unemployment hovers at near 10 percent.

But, just keep trying. Maybe the Republicans will change their minds.

Same for health care. Just keep trying to reach a bipartisan agreement with the Republicans. Surely they'll have to say yes someday. I just know it.

And I'm pretty sure that this is the year I'll get a pony for my birthday. I'm going to wish real hard and make it happen.

It doesn't work that way any more. Senate rules say they don't have to actually do anything beyond announce their intention to filibuster. And that's good enough, apparently.

The Democrats are in the majority.
They can change the rules.

Changing the rules to say that Senators would need to have the courage of their convictions and ACTUALLY bring a debate seems like pretty much a no brainer.

And if the Republicans complained about actually having to show up in order to prevent America from moving forward. . . Well LET THEM.

The majority in congress right now is playing out every stereo type of feckless wimps.

IMHO.

They can't change the rules until a new session of Congress, which won't be until 1/2011.

They're not going to get Republican votes.

This is insanity.

It's like there are 3 Democrats and 97 Republicans in the Senate.

The difference being of course, now we get nothing done, but with 97 republicans in the senate, it would take about two weeks to become a fascist state.

Absolutely! Just schedule the vote and let the American people see exactly who is standing between them and the job they need. Why is this so hard for them to understand? My guess they are counting on the invertebrate nature of the dems, but I believe if a vote were scheduled, and held, republicans would vote for it.

Republicans hit Democrats consistently for obstructionism, and the media picked it up and put it in terms of asking Democrats to justify obstructing. Why can't Senate Democrats ever figure out they need to talk about Republican obstructionism if they want the media to talk about it.

If the Republicans want to filibuster, hold the vote and get them on the record as opposing a jobs bill.

Make them filibuster the jobs bill. Make them hold a real filibuster, spending all night reading from the phone book, to show the American people where these bozos stand on jobs.

When will people learn that standing and speaking all night to sustain a filibuster is not necessary? Please put away your Mr. Smith Goes to Washington DVDs and VHS tapes. It doesn't work like that. It was a movie.

I know that. But there's no reason the Dems couldn't do away with the bullshit situation that exists now where the mere threat of a filibuster is enough to require 60 votes, and actually make them go through the formalities and the spectacle to show just how obstructionist and anti-jobs they really are.

As I said above, the real problem as I see it is that there are no consequences for a filibuster. Hold the cloture vote and make them go on the record as opposing a jobs bill. Let's see how many of them have the nerve. I'm betting at least a few of them will chicken out.

MAKE. THEM. FILIBUSTER. THE. JOBS. BILL.

which part of that is so fucking difficult? senate dems wonder why the republicans-as-obstructionists narrative isn't sticking. BECAUSE YOU'RE NOT CALLING THEIR BLUFF AND MAKING THEM OBSTRUCT.

people outside TPM and the beltway don't see back-room threats from republicans to filibuster. here's what people outside the beltway see: dems in charge, dems squabbling, and nothing being done. no change. no nothing. notice what they're NOT seeing? republicans -- because they have been able to stay off the stage. PUT THEM ON THE STAGE AND MAKE THEM OBSTRUCT.

I can agree that both sides are pathetic, but at least the side that is in control is trying something. The other side is just blocking things no matter what the expense is. To have a Senator block all nominees until he gets big earmarks for his state is outlandish. To think that it would be a good thing for the country to get rid of Medicare as the Republicans want is so far out there that it is laughable. When are they all going to realize that the same old ideas aren't going to work. They haven't worked in the past and they won't work in the future. How hard is that to figure out? This country needs jobs jobs jobs, and to think that one party is trying to block any hope of getting a jobs bill is a good thing....well if you truly think it is a good thing then you are just as crazy and as out of touch as the Republicans are.
I hope the Democrats make the Republicans filibuster the jobs bill and the nominees and everything else. Make them block everything so that the American people can really see why nothing is getting done. Lets show the American people just what each member of the Senate is made of.

So, where is #41 on this? Is he a different kind of Republican, or just more of the same, dressed in a barn coat. Oops, I forgot, he's not running for anything right now, the coat is in the closet...in Wrentham.

Bring it to the floor, vote on it and if it fails, it fails. The American people will then know exactly who to blame. If it never gets a vote, then it's both parties voting against us.

February 8, 2010 5:02 PM

Yup, bring it to the floor. Remember when public opinion began to change concerning GOP obstructionism in the Clinton era? It was when Gingrich's lock-step troops prevented a budget bill from moving through, causing a federal government shutdown. Republicans were sure this shutdown would mean trouble for Clinton, but instead it ensured their own defeat at the polls. Of course, it helped greatly that Gingrich belittled his own stance by seeming to suggest that his alleged snub by Clinton on Air Force One was a big reason for his tactic.

But we have plenty of similar, obnoxious tactics by Republicans now, which can relate to the jobs bill. For instance Sen. Shelby's insane universal hold on Obama appointees until his state gets billions in pork.

So: Flog the hell out of that and similar developments, pointing out that the very same party that claims Obama is failing to create jobs is standing in the way of any legislation that actually attempts to do just that -- unless, of course, it involves corporate or high-income tax cuts.

Quit blaming the Republicans, blame Obama and Democrats vs. Progressive Democrat.

Republican don't have any power in Congress to obstruct or pass any Bill--the Democrats control Congress and the White House.

Blame Obama and Progressive Democrats...for a change.

Bring the bill to the floor and make Republicans filibuster it, if that's what they are going to do.

Exactly. The way to make a bully back down is to stand toe to toe with him and make him throw the first punch. Let Republicans threaten anything they want to, then call their bluff and tell them, "Go ahead and filibuster. We'll make sure every unemployed person in America knows who's blocking the jobs bill."

In this corner, the Dunces.

. . . and in this corner, the Reprobates.

We the People need a third party.

The Dunces are, well, incompetent. The Reprobates, they're what they are, corporate hacks of the first order.

Election reform, break the strangle-hold these two corporations have on our election system, and have real people doing the Peoples business instead of installed corporate shills.

We are so screwed.
