TPMDC has been searching far and wide for public supporters of Rep. Paul Ryan's "Roadmap" budget blueprint, a measure that Republican leaders insist is Ryan's alone and which grips the political third rail of Social Security and Medicare cuts.

But it turns out Ryan, who says he is willing to lose his job over the plan if it means ending the deficit, isn't as lonely as it may seem.

He has nine Republican friends co-sponsoring the measure, which would effectively privatize Social Security if it becomes law. That's unlikely, and both GOP leaders and Ryan's office say this will not be the Republican budget alternative that gets a floor vote this spring.

But Democrats, sensing a political opportunity reminiscent of the 2005 Social Security fight that hurt the GOP in the polls, say they want to force a vote on the Ryan plan.

Looks like it already has 10 "Yay" votes, counting Ryan (R-WI).

The original co-sponsors are:

Rep. Roscoe Bartlett (R-MD)
Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) - She was just talking about her support for the idea on Fox.
Rep. Michael Burgess (R-TX)
Rep. John Campbell (R-CA)
Rep. Jeb Hensarling (R-TX) - He also spoke out in favor of the plan last week
Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA)
Rep. Tom Price (R-GA)

Secondary co-sponsors:

Rep. Cynthia Lummis (R-WY) - signed on Thursday
Rep. Sue Myrick (R-NC) - signed on Thursday

This NEEDs to be turned into a DCCC commercial and ran on every TV station in their districts, 24/7/365 until the election.

Now that is a great idea. But it needs to include a statement that Medicare is a GOV'T run program for those GOP and Tea Party members who believe that it falls from heaven!

Reid and Pelosi should pound the GOP with this, and try to force a vote. As is abundantly clear from other threads today, I don't know jack about SS, but I do know a opportunity to shift the momentum when I see one. The State of the Union, question time, Healthcare Summit, and this SS flap, offer that chance.

It does make me wonder though why the leadership so damn quick to pounce on a political winner, but slow as molasses when it comes to actual substantive legislation?

Please vote on it. Then you can explain why balancing the budget is a bad thing later.

But somehow, when the President and Congress propose to make cuts to fraud and waste in the SS/Medicare system, your party promises to "protect Medicare".

Your party is filled with disgusting hypocrites.

You know, maybe we should stop calling them hypocrites. That would imply that they actually know what they are doing.

What was that saying again? Dear Lord, please forgive him for he does not know what he is doing....

how about we tax the living shit out filthy rich americans and corporations. we'll balance the budget AND leave them plenty of money to buy their sports cars and mansions and give multi-million dollar bonuses to each other.

but you seem to think it's better to balance the budget by saying "fuck the old and the poor."

maybe you can explain why you prefer the one to the other.

p.s. it's comical that you'd lecture democrats on balancing the budget. who was the last president to balance the budget? who was the president who pissed it all away?

A 2008 GAO study found: 72 percent of all foreign corporations and about 57 percent of U.S. companies doing business in the United States paid no federal income taxes for at least one year between 1998 and 2005. More than half of foreign companies and about 42 percent of U.S. companies paid no U.S. income taxes for two or more years in that period.

During that time corporate sales in the United States totaled $2.5 trillion.

The GAO said corporations escaped paying federal income taxes for a variety of reasons including operating losses, tax credits and ... Wait for it! ... an ability to use transactions within the company to shift income to low tax countries.

Wow. Really? Yes.

"Most people in America understand that the rich people hire good accountants and figure out how not to necessarily pay all the taxes and the middle class gets stuck [paying the bulk of federal income taxes]."
— International War Criminal George W. Bush, stating the obvious and, inadvertently, telling the truth, possibly for the only time in his life, to Fox News Sunday Legacy-journalist/Host Chris "Paving the way for Luke Russert" Wallace, February 10, 2008.

Personally, I thought this gem was the only thing he ever said about tax cuts for the rich that made sense. On second thought: It was the only thing he ever said that made amy sense, gawd bless 'im ... as he spends his long remaining days, locked in a 6'x9' cell with Dick Cheney, somewhere in Europe. Lo siento, vato. No estamos autorizados a retirar el cuerpo de Darth. Además, creo que realmente le gusta usted.

Corporations never pay taxes...consumers do...when you realize that, you may be ready for your next lesson.

Typical Republican: You hate America by destroying Americans. if Shrub had privatized SS, most seniors would have been ruined. But you are glad about that. You actually hate America by supporting policies that hurt real Americans but you are too coward to admit it. I almost feel sorry for your family.

I really don't get why they think this is politically a good idea.
Privatizing SS was not popular with the public. It hurt the GOP and they dropped the idea because they feared public backlash.
Now, after the stock market tanks, and an election is approaching, they not only revive this idea but decide to throw in abolishing Medicare too? I know voters complain about the deficit. But try taking away Medicare and see how loudly they complain.

Yes, I really wish that Sarah Palin would loudly endorse the abolishing of Medicare and the privatization of Social Security at her next Tea Party gig. She'd be lucky to get out alive, not that such a failure on her part would be a bad thing.
