Scott Lee Cohen, the embattled Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor of Illinois, appeared for an interview Thursday on Chicago Tonight, seeking to answer questions about allegations of domestic violence, drug abuse and other damaging issues.

Cohen has faced significant controversy -- including a call from Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn to potentially quit the race -- since he narrowly won a six-way Democratic primary on Tuesday. In 2005, he was arrested for allegedly threatening his girlfriend at the time by putting a knife to her throat and throwing her against a wall. The case was dropped after the woman, who had previously been arrested for prostitution and later pleaded guilty, failed to show up to court. In addition, his wife said in his divorce case that he abused steroids and attempted to sexually assault her. Cohen has admitted to past steroid use.

"You know, all this happened at a rough time in my life, and you know, I understand it looks bad," said Cohen, who was accompanied in the interview by his ex-wife Debra York-Cohen. "And that's why I tried so hard to put it out, the day I announced I was running. I have answered every question that was asked me by the media, in a full, complete, and honest way. Again, I tried so hard to put this out the day I announced so it wouldn't come to this. Nobody wanted to listen."

Interviewer Phil Ponce asked Debra York-Cohen about her allegation that Cohen attempted to force himself upon her sexually. "At the time, that was an accurate statement," said York-Cohen. "And again, I will reiterate what I said before, that Scott was at that time using steroids, which he has openly come forward and discussed with anyone and everyone who's asked him that. That's who he was then. That is not who he is now. And as a matter of fact, it wasn't who he was through the rest of the proceedings of our divorce, because all that had ended.

York-Cohen also declined to comment on whether Cohen has been timely with alimony payments, citing ongoing legal proceedings.

Ponce asked Cohen about the 2005 police report, which said that his then-girlfriend had physical scarring that was presumably from the altercation in question. Cohen strongly denied hitting the woman. "You know what, she may have had marks, but if she did, they were done by her," said Cohen. "And if we can find her, and have her come forward, I'm sure she would tell you the same thing."

Regarding his past steroid use, Cohen said: "You know what. It was all at the same time, it was a bad time in my life. You know, I was trying to put muscle on. It was a bad decision."

Cohen said that he would not leave the race. "I don't believe that I'm an embarrassment to the ticket," said Cohen. "From day one, I've been honest and forthright. Again, I tried so hard to put it out there."

Ponce asked Cohen about the conventional wisdom that if Cohen continues on the Democratic ticket, Gov. Pat Quinn does not stand a chance of winning. "You know what, he would be running with the most honest man, the most dedicated person," said Cohen. "I absolutely, strongly disagree. I think it's a strength for the party."

However, at the very end of the interview, Ponce asked Cohen what he would do if it became clear that his candidacy would prevent a Democrat from being elected governor. Would he drop out then? "I would have to seriously think about it, because I would never ever do anything to hurt the people of Illinois," said Cohen.

I am very unhappy about this. I voted for this guy. I looked at a few web sites, saw some advertisements. This guy ran the best campaign, and seemed like the best choice. I guess I could be accused of not doing enough research, and so I should have stayed home. Like the other 80% of voters here in Illinois (turnout was pathetic).

But where the F was the media on this?? Heck, where were his opponents?? HOW THE HELL DOES SOMETHING LIKE THIS COME OUT THE DAY *AFTER* THE ELECTION? I'm really pissed.

This, along with other scandals, may turn Illinois purple. It's really in question whether we will keep Obama's Senate seat.

This was known before the election. Sure it was not covered like it is now, but then he was just one of what seven candidates? Now he's the Democratic Party candidate for Lt. Governor. It was known, other challengers had asked Hynes and Quinn to speak out against Cohen, because they couldn't get the message out. Cohen self-funded and drastically outspent the rest - Lt. Governor candidates don't get a lot of donors, and can't spend what they do get on an "attack ad". They have to hope voters do their research.

ARG, you did the right thing. You did the homework based on what this guy and his handlers and the local media allowed you to see at the time.

I'm just as amazed as you are that this only came to light now.

One bad apple, and all that rot, eh?

But I hope to hell he gets his comeuppance.

Well, now I know why nobody shows up to vote on primary day. (Turnout here was in the low 20% range.) They don't want to feel like a fool the next day.

This guy, Cohen, advertised on TPM. I visited his web site by clicking through an add posted here. I thought that was pretty savvy of him, and the fact that he was running the best campaign (of course, because he spent the most money) seemed like a good thing.

I find this very discouraging.

I do too, but this might turn out to be a good thing for future voters....they're gonna look into things more on the local level, maybe.

No more "Lost" and "Dancing With The Stars", maybe.

Numerous affairs, taking steroids, tries to physically force himself on his wife, was arrested for domestic violence against his girlfriend but that's all in the past all way back in 2005 and that was a rough time in his life and he fell in with a "fast crowd".

He's a con man to boot. You can tell just by watching him - he's slimy as hell.

Illinois needs a run off system--when candidates get a nomination with 20% of the vote things like this are more likely to happen. This pawn is broken as a candidate and the party should unite to get him out of the race--it's a long time to November and the damage could be rapaired if something is done now.

Il dems must make a decisive move. Get his booty out o there, Quinn and Maddie. Why they didnt do this right away is beyond me. Quinn needs no more weak point if he is to win in Nov. Illinoians are notoriously bad at researching candidates..or producing wholesome ones? Either way, the daly/blago/ryan/daly saga lives on in our beloved body building wife beater here

If you have to explain why you're not an embarrassment to the ticket, BY DEFINITION YOU'RE AN EMBARASSMENT TO THE TICKET.

Is there any weird trick the Democrats can use to exclude this guy? Can Quinn withdraw from the ballot and run on a third party? Can the general assembly pass special laws to give Quinn a way to wiggle out from under this or is that too ex post facto or something?

This pisses me off to no end... and most of my anger is directed at the damn media. Sometimes I get the sense that 'journalists' who cover government and politics are upset they don't cover sports, because they're always a hell of lot more interested in covering the scores and inside tidbits, in a way that apes the local team beat's news and notes.

On the rare occasion the media can roused to actually cover policy, it's always stupid he said/she said - without so much as a scintilla of accepting that yes, some views are just so damn stupid they ought to be called out as such (i.e., there's a legitimate conservative argument to be made against Health Care Reform... "Death panels" isn't one of them.)

The real shame... there was a pretty damn good candidate available - Art Turner.

Unfortunately, he's simply a solid, competent legislator. I know 'excellence in competency' doesn't excite people, but Turner had a 30 year career as a progressive, honest public servant -- a "lunchpail legislator", if you will.. He's not brash and loud, and not looking to get his name in the paper or on the local news... He simply goes about his job, writing solid legislation and pushing through good programs that help people (he's been a long-time leader on affordable housing, for example). He's got the added bonus of scoring pretty damn well when it comes to eschewing various powerful interests -- from Mike Madigan to lobbying efforts.

In a sense, he's PRECISELY what I'd want in a Lt Gov... a good, honest, sincere public servant -- rather than an all sizzle/no steak whore (and a whore is a whore... whether it's a "Two Americas" fake like John Edwards or a "real America" numbskull like Sarah Palin).

Alas... such people generally don't stand a chance, especially in a roiling environment like today.

Exactly "WHERE AND HOW" did he put all this information out there... I seen no quotes from the camapign season saying "I am a wife beating, hooker loving jackass" hell he could of sewn up the rethug nomination with that campaign.

Ok so let's take a look at this.

I don't know this guy and have no idea whether his "Fell in with a bad crowd" story holds water. If it does, then I'd like to point out a weakness in the Democratic Party (yes, another one!) which is the lack of a forgiveness mechanism. The Republicans make people whole (sometimes over and over again) if they confess their sins to Jesus. George Bush was a drug addict who was arrested for drunk driving and still managed to be president.

I'm just saying that if the guy's story about having turned it around holds up, then maybe the party of "Move On" ought to move on, too.

If it doesn't, then Illinois Democrats need to get serious about "Excellence in Competency" (which is a great phrase, by the way, Zonk) and get Cohen to step aside in favor of Quinn.

Sorry to be all teacherish here, but Democrats are supposed to be the people who believe people can change, and change the world, and yet we run for the hills at the first whiff of controversy. By this logic, nobody in AA who didn't also come to Jesus could have a hope of achieving higher office, and even with a Jesus conversion, they would have to do it by joining the Republican party. Which leaves a lot of talented people out.

Just something worth considering.

As bad as this new is for Illinois, it's symptomatic of a larger problem with the Democratic Party. If the information was available prior to the primary, which it apparently was, the party should have discouraged him from running. If he insisted on running anyway, they should have given the information to his opponents so that the primary could winnow him out. You know that the Republicans are experts at sliming Democrats while coating themselves with Teflon (see John Ensign for a textbook example). If Democrats want to win consistently, they are going to have to get their organizational act together.

This reveals a SERIOUS issue with respect to down-ticket races and Citizens United. Let's say you are a Repukeliscum strategist, and your candidate, the leading Repukeliscum, is in a blue state (like Illinois). How do you set yourself up to do well in the general?

Simple. Pick the weakest opponent. You begin at filing day, and determine who your opponents are. Using the excellent oppo research of the Repukeliscum Party, you find the candidate who has the child-beating allegation, or the odd sex-attack, or too many DUIs, or whatever; we'll call this person "Scumbad Dem". You get the word out to Daddy Moneybags, your buddy at GINORMUS Construction. GINORMUS runs ads pumping the name recognition for Scumbag Dem, the weakest candidate, and you pump this guy using fuzzy dog pictures and get his name recognition up. Maybe just maybe you actually GET THE PERSON IN using your signature gatherers, also paid for by GINORMUS.

It's Primary Day, and Scumbag wins!! Hooray for Democracy.

On the day after Primary Day, you begin with the negative ads revealing Scumbag's history of sex abuse or whatever.

That's the Citizens United effect. It won't be on the big races, but on the little races that are also important. After all, if you can get the Democratic ticket filled with child molestors, perverts, and red-light-camera violators, everyone will ignore the log in your party.

It makes no sense for Lt. Gov. (in Illinois, at least) to be independently electable anyway. Let them run on paired tickets and this sort of low-voter-interest shenanigans goes away before it's a problem.

That said, the only person I don't blame for this debacle is Scott Cohen, creep though he may be. At least he made an effort to win an election. Every Illinois Democratic Party official above the rank of intern had a duty to head this off, which they could have done before lunch on the day he announced his candidacy if they'd felt like doing their jobs, including and especially the other candidates.

This is an open letter to everyone who collects a substantial paycheck from Grainger Terry.

You crossed the line when you started listing 18 year old unemployed kids as “Expenditures” on your D-2’s for SLC. Posting “Craig’s list” ads asking people to show up for “Astro-Turf Jobs Fairs” and BS “Campaign Rally’s” and then paying them $200 to show up and listing their names on D2′S under expenditures, crosses the line- especially when they put dozens and dozens of 18 year old kids name’s under expenditures for “consulting ” on their D2 expense reports.

At this point. You should show just a tiny bit of class, decent respect, human dignity and personally call each and everyone of those kids and apologize to them this weekend. Then submit an amended D-2 report remove their names from the expenditure reports, and repay them for their time from your personal accounts. If you and the names of people who worked on behalf of SLC don’t make a mild attempt to do this, your names will show up on Politico, TPM, Washington Wire, Political Wire and who knows where else. “Poilitics ain’t bean bad.” That is not a threat. This is the least you can do in the name of basic human decency and the future careers of 18 year old kids who may wish to continue working in government or politics. If you fail to do this, well, you deserve what you get and you should be prepared to look for new work out of Illinois and out of Washington DC. This isn’t personal, it is just a fair warning.

In the spirit of due diligence as a voter, I would like to ask the political media to compile and publish a list of all current elected officials and candidates who: 1) have ever been divorced, 2) who have ever been arrested for anything, regardless of the outcomes. Also include everything about any time they have had a problem of any sort with the IRS, again, regardless of the outcomes. Please list the nature and timing of each arrest and interview - and the outcomes to all. Please locate and publish every court document in everyone of their divorces or other court appearances. As a follow-up, please interview all of the their spouses, ex-spouses and ex-girlfriends.

This is the standard and precedent your political reporting profession has just set for us - and I plan to hold you to it. As an dedicated and deeply concerned Illinois voter, I want to know all of this about every candidate, before I will vote for any of them from now on - because that is what you have convinced me matters in Illinois politics in 2010. I look forward to you doing your jobs, for a change.
