The Sierra Club is up with a new radio ad campaign targeting Sen. Blanche Lincoln (D-AR) over what the group calls her "her decision to co-sponsor legislation that would undermine the Clean Air Act."

The Club is the second group to take to the airwaves to attack Lincoln over her decision to join an amendment by Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) that would block the EPA from regulating greenhouse gas emissions. Last month, MoveOn.org ran several TV ads attacking Lincoln for co-sponsoring the measure.

Audio of the new Sierra Club spot and video of MoveOn's ad after the jump.

The Sierra Club spot began running in Arkansas today. A spokesperson for the group wouldn't divulge the size of the buy, but said that it would be heard by many. Here's the ad:

In a release announcing the campaign, Sierra Club Executive Director Carl Pope claimed that the amendment Lincoln supports will endanger public health in favor of padding oil company profits. " Senator Lincoln's constituents ought to ask her why she wants to help Big Oil and out-of-state coal companies to the detriment of the clean energy businesses and natural gas industry that are actually creating jobs in her home state," Pope said.

The MoveOn TV spot, launched in late January, also focuses on public health. Here's the ad:

Two other progressive activist groups, Friends of the Earth and CREDO Action, announced last week their plan to erect billboards in Arkansas targeting Lincoln over the resolution.

Right. Only Magic Blanche could possibly win for the Dems in AR despite some of the most dismal polling in the country. If anything is going to assure a GOP win, it's keeping Lincoln on the ticket.

I don't think there is any path to getting Blanche off the ticket, is there? Unless she decides not to run?

No, that's not right evidently. There is a chance of primary-ing her (don't know nuthin' about relevant dates). Current polling shows all Dems losing badly to Republicans but it's way to early to read too much into that. http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2010/02/poll-blanche-lincoln-trails-gop-opponents----and-so-do-other-possible-dem-candidates.php#more

Hopefully, Blanche will be next:

Bayh is an anomaly of sorts; he really grew to dislike the influence of liberal activists on his Senate colleagues. To him, these activists increased the cost of doing business. Reaching out to the other side became more risky than rallying around an ideological pole, even though that rallying around contributed to stasis. When it became clear to Bayh that the White House wasn't going to play his game -- wasn't going to sell out liberals at every turn -- Bayh decided he had had enough.

Good riddance to these Republicrats who only undermine Democratic positions and the party itself. And to the Obama White House, welcome to reality.

That's a rule, didn't you know? By the new DLC math, if you're against anybody with a "D" after their name you're a terrorist. Or a traitor. Or something evil. It doesn't really matter that Blanche votes with the Rs on every-damn-thing, or that she goes out of her way to undermine every piece of Progressive legislation she can get her grubby little claws on. She's a D! Love her! Or else.

Its a pity there isn't a viable Democrat running against this fool in the Dem. primary. She's running even further to the right of fellow desperado John McCain who appears to be running further to the right of Attila, the Hun. The nation could do without these two special interest shills.

Heh. This is exactly the kind of stuff that's killing Democrats. Empowering an agency to shut down any company it wants, based on fraudulent climate change theory is asking for a slap down.
But hey, if the left wants to help Republicans...be my guest.
Keep up the good work.

No, what's killing the Dems are fake ass Dems. Perhaps you haven't noticed? Republicans suck and any Dem who votes like one should head over to that sorry ass party of klansmen! What we need are real Democrats. Alan Grayson had an article on the huffington post a few days ago and he had it right..."You Can't Beat A Republican By Becoming One! I couldn't agree more. Only idiots could believe that after the 8 years they trashed this country that Republicans deserve another chance. Why not just drink some bleach and get it over with?

Glad to see some pushback against Lincoln. It would be a lot more effective, though, if all these organizations could coordinate and spend their resources backing a better candidate.

This thread points out the problem we are facing in the upcoming elections. There are elected officials, such as Blanche Lincoln, Evan Bayh, and Ben Nelson, that we progressives (OK, liberals) see as DINOs. They cause us more trouble than they are worth, and are arguably the reason why HCR is blocked. In an effort to keep them appeased, the bill was watered down to where it caused problems on the liberal end, and still the Republicans marched in lockstep against it.

So, what's the answer, challenge them with more liberal candidates, in the hope of replacing them with a more reliable vote for good change? The problem with that scenario is that they represent states where it is difficult to elect Democrats, and even more difficult to elect a non conservative politician. Challenging them raises the possibility that a Republican, in name and attitude, wins the seat, which makes passing legislation even harder, if not impossible, against an intransigent minority. Have a few of these races go the red direction, and they could flip the Senate which means they would have control over its agenda, including the scheduling of debates, votes, and committees, far worse than the situation we are in now. So, what's the answer? It beats the hell out of me. Any suggestions?

I have a suggestion. Stand up for what you believe in. If Democrats are convinced that their ideas are superior to the Republicans' then they should try to persuade the American people to vote for them BECAUSE they will govern that way. Maybe you win, maybe you lose, but when you do win you can actually get important things accomplished. The GOP's governance very nearly wrecked the country and Bush, in my opinion, will go down in history as the worst president in American history. Obama is brilliant, knowledgeable and a supremely-talented politician. He and the Dems would be pummeling the Republicans if the Republicrats would get out of the way. Which they will very soon, voluntarily or otherwise, beginning with Bayh, then Lincoln. Some may be hopeless but many Republicrats are just craven politicians who will go where the wind blows them. Obama is the wind.

I see DINOs as a symptom of a larger problem - the lack of leadership and cohesive direction in the party. It's that void that allows the nelsons and lincolns to define themselves as separate from their party's policy agendas while simultaneously enjoying it's institutional support and loyal base.

The dems are a big tent party. It needs to be inclusive. But it has to focus it's agenda to a a clear set of policy objectives and communicate it clearly - not just to voters, but also to elected members. They need to rehabilitate the democrat "brand" and convince people that the democrats stand up for what they believe. If that happens the DINOs will see that it's in their best interest to stop bucking their party....or get taken down in a primary.

I don't think primary challenges will work with the party as ideologically adrift as it is now.

"Big tent party," yes, but you don't want to let people take a crap inside the tent. Send them to the Port-o-san outside the tent until they know how to behave.

You should consider that the Democrat Party is the party of the center-right(the GOP is the party of the far right) and that you, and I, as progressives are not welcome as anything other than doormats and drones for the center-right Democrat Party. You might consider that the only progressive party in this country is the Green Party. The Democrat Party will never get 60 again, when they had 60 nothing got done, so frankly there is no point to working for this party.

Agreed on the Dem Party. Disagreed on Green Party. We do not live in a parliamentary system. We're stuck with the Dems.

All that's left is to fight the corrupt for the shell and soul of the Dem Party.

Let her twist slowly, slowly in the wind. And while you're at it, let the DSCC know they won't see any contributions to a fund that benefits the likes of Ben Nelson. Concede the Senate, if needs be, and use a 41-vote Democratic "majority" to block legislative abominations; let things grind further to a halt until the public has had its fill. Hell, we have proof a majority that includes the likes of Sen. Lincoln won't do anyone any good anyway.
