Mitt Romney was an apparent victim of air rage on a flight home from the Vancouver Winter Olympics this afternoon. The Toronto Globe And Mail reported the story this evening:

The man sitting in front of Mr. Romney's wife dropped his seat back and when Mr. Romney asked him to move it upright for takeoff, the man became "physically violent." Another report said that the man tried to strike Mr. Romney.

According to reports, Romney "did not retaliate" to the attack.

Romney's Air Canada flight had not left the Vancouver airport when the incident happened, and the man who attacked Romney was arrested after the pilot returned to the gate, the Globe and Mail reports.

On the Website for his Free And Strong America PAC, Romney blogged the trip he and his wife took to Vancouver as guests of the city's Olympic host committee. Romney led a similar committee prior to the Salt Lake City Olympic games in 2002.

We're updating and following this story at http://mittromneycentral.com/2010/02/15/breaking-romney-threatened-by-fellow-airline-passenger/

Is everything as it seems in this scenario?

Wow! You are so keen and quick-witted to be able to see through the gauzy veil of conspiracy! You are correct, it was a failed 'character assassination' attempt. We were trying to goad Mitt into losing his cool and acting out in rage so that his 2012 hopes would be dashed! Oh woe is me... if it wasn't for you pesky right wingers we would have succeeded! Mwahahahaha

How long did you wrestle with which direction to point your arrow? It's very ambiguous.

I think Romney's a major-league tool when it comes to politics, but I wouldn't have blamed him one bit if he punched this guy's lights out. If I had my way, air ragers would be forcibly renditioned to Gitmo.

I agree. What was the guy's problem? All Romney asked was that the guy in front of him put his seat back up for take-off as per the law.

Why stop at air ragers, why not imprison line cutters, slow lane drivers, gum spitters, and loud talkers too? Hell! Let's just make Puerto Rico our personal gulag for everybody who gets out of line! Behave or be gone, that's what I say!

With all due respect; air rage is not same as slow lane drivers.

No doubt! Slow lane drivers should have their fingernails pulled out while being forced to listen to entire Kenny G cd's.

It will be interesting to see if more information comes out. If it was before take off. Did they remove the person from the plane. They should have if possible. Second, did they move the individual right away or what happened afterward.

I'm up early and TPM is always late updating their website so I ventured over to Huffpo and Dailykos who have the story on this already. It appears that Romney handled himself well and the other guy may have been having a bad day. I am no fan of Romney but let's get the stories straight. Doesn't look like much of a story here.

Yes, you're correct; not much of a story here - so why was it reported?

I never trust anything coming from any politicians (or other celebrities) anymore; not even these small, seemingly insignificant news items. I'm always suspicious that they're part of a larger PR campaign to 're-introduce' a pol or celebrity into the public conversation. With this 'story', I feel as though I'm being encouraged to feel a little sorry for Mitt. He is, after all, just a regular kind of guy who's only trying to take his wife home from a trip and here he is being bothered by this mean, inconsiderate man who went from being belligerent to "physically violent" in a flash - and who, according to another report, tried to strike Romney.

What was that guy's name? Who did he work for? (the PR firm?) Will any charges be filed and then dropped?

My take-away?

1) Mitt Romney is an ordinary guy who gets hassled in life by the unpredictable, just like me.

2) He stays cool and doesn't meet potential violence with violence so he's a guy who stays in control and doesn't get carried away by spur-of-the-moment stuff.

3) He was just trying to take his wife home from a trip

4) Maybe he'd be the sort of guy that I'd like to have a beer with.

I just read that Chynna Phillips has entered rehab or something. When was the last time any of us heard anything about her? She must have a record or book or movie in the pipeline. Mitt, meet Chynna; Chynna, Mitt.

Well, no, it's a safety issue. If there's an accident during takeoff, you're going to be thrown forward to some extent, and if the seat in front of you is reclined, it's an additional hazard.

I was on a plane once when the woman next to me was yakking on her cell phone almost up to the time the plane touched down. I wanted to punch her lights out. I realize that there is some doubt that cell phone transmissions could cause problems with the plane, but who wants to take that chance? What's the problem with following the instructions of the flight crew?

Romney was a guest of the Canadian Olympics people as a former organizer of the Salt Lake Games. The plane is probably a little puddle jumper with glorified cardtable chairs bolted to the floor.

The plane was on the ground so the pilot probably hadn't made the announcement yet. Romney was probably kicking the guy's seat back like a little kid. I hope he took off his belt and whipped Mittens like a mule.

I once sat behind a lady who lowered her seatback into full recline, leaving me no choice but to stretch my legs so far under her seat that my toes poked out under the front of her seat. About half way through the flight she indignantly turned to me and told me to stop poking my feet out from under her seat. I refrained from punching her since she was a "lady," though from such clueless disregard for the effects of her actions on others I would surmise she was an investment banker, so no jury would have convicted me...

I have come to HATE flying. It is sometimes a necessary evil.

The domestic airlines all suck, except Southwest.

The flight attendants hate their jobs, hate the passengers and hate the management.

The airlines rape you for baggage fees, food, drinks, and so on. If anything happens to your bags, it's pretty much not their fault.

Enough of the passengers don't know how to behave, that it makes the trip hell. Passengers with children who kick the back of your chair, passengers in front who don't bother to warn the passenger behind they're about to recline the seat (ever had your laptop shoved in your chest all of a sudden? good times). Idiots who don't respect other people's carry-ons and clothing when they are trying to jam their oversized carry-on into the bin.

Not even getting into the crappy planes some airlines fly, and the delays... ugh. I wish someone would invent a superfast water craft for international travel!

Flying is so stressful now that I wouldn't dare tell the passenger in front of me to return their seatback to the upright position for takeoff because I don't know how he/she would react, but luckily, the flight crew has always walked through and done it. That said, there are people who just assume rules and requests don't apply to them, like the couple who boarded early just like us and heard the same announcement not to put coats in the upper compartments because the flight was full and they would be needed for bags--the couple had just put their coats in the compartment and I watched what they would do--they glanced at each other and upwards, exchanged words, but did not remove their coats. As the plane fills up, the announcement is repeated several times. Finally a flight attendant checking for space opens up the compartment and shoves a bag in on top of the couple's coats. He jumps up and gets the coats, but as a parting shot to the flight attendant says "Coats cost money!"
