Rep. Tim Ryan (D-OH) took to the House floor tonight to call on Republicans to "distance" themselves from the ugly epithets allegedly yelled at minority members of Congress by anti-health care reform protesters gathered on Capitol Hill today.
Ryan called on Republican pols who addressed today's anti-reform rally to "come out and condemn" the protesters for their alleged slurs against black members and Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA), who is openly gay.
"This behavior is irresponsible it does not belong in a civilized society," Ryan said of the protests. Video after the jump.
Ryan seemed visibly upset by the allegations, but he didn't refrain from using a questionable phrase himself to describe the protesters.
"I wanted to come to the floor today after hearing about experiencing and reading some of the reports about what happened here today in the nation's capitol to some of the finest servants that this institution has ever seen by some of these tea bagger protesters who have been out today," he said.
Ryan said that that it was now up to the Republicans to condemn what was said.
"We call on the Republicans to say 'shame on you' to that kind of behavior," he said.
Check out the video, posted to YouTube by Ryan's office tonight:

Um, just because it wasn't uploaded on video to the Internet for your viewing pleasure doesn't mean it didn't happen. There are numerous eyewitnesses--lawmakers, staffers, and reporters--who have attested to what happened.

Why is it that "some people say" is all the proof you need on Fox News, but when it comes to what experts and scientist say 10's or even 100's of years of scientific data is suggestive at best?
The right wing is really becoming a parody of a parody of itself with the amount of inverse logic they need to maintain their world view.
Well you can't prove that WMD did not exist, therefor that's proof that they do exist. . .
Stop government health-care and don't touch my Medicare. . . really??!!! Is there any sense of how stupid they look to anyone who have the smallest bit of sense?
Yet they have the nerve to ask why we call them stupid when they tell us we need to keep the government away from their Medicare.

Funny. When some moron half-Governor from Alaska tells the tea-baggers what Obama or the Dems are going to do at some time in the distant future, they treat it is as a documented fact. This 'burden of proof' notion seems to be in a constant state of flux over there on the right.

It also allegedly says that faith is sufficient proof for those who don't need proof to believe what they want to believe, even when what they want to believe is not true, truth being irrelevant to "God" and "His" "Son" Christ when a lie better serves one's agenda.

Yep. Quite correct. Hearsay is evidence of an out of court statement submitted for the purpose of proving the matter asserted in the statement. Like say, having a witness testify "John told me he ate doughnuts" submitted for the purpose of proving that John did, in fact, eat doughnuts.
We're not out to prove that Frank is a f****t or that Lewis is a n****r here. We're out to prove that stupid rednecks committed the act of uttering those hateful epithets. Testimony about that is no more "hearsay" than testimony by an eyewitness that he saw John Smith shoot Bill Jones would be hearsay.
But, never mind. It's much easier to believe that evul libruls made up some totally bogus charge than it is to believe that anyone in a crowd of angry ignorant white people, including the guy with the handsome handle bar mustache and the Confederate flag do rag, would ever use such language.

Seriously, methinks they doest protest too much. It isn't up to Democrats to "prove" it. It is up to the objective and honest to accept the sufficient proofs that already exist, without regard to politics or political affiliation.
The reason you pretend it isn't proven is because you approve of racial and homophobic slurs -- without which name-calling the far-right lunatic fringe of which you are member wouldn't have any core "values," and would have nothing to say.

I'm one of the witnesses. I was riding my bike through the crowd on Independence Ave. near First St. SE at around 3pm when I heard angry shouts, including the N-word, directed at a black Congressman, whom I didn't recognize at the time but now realize was John Lewis.
It was one of the ugliest crowds I have seen, in just about every sense of the word. There were many ignorant, nasty signs, but the one that I thought summed it all up was the one that said "We need health reform, but not Obamacare." That says it all. It's not the fact of health reform that bothers them, but the fact that Obama is doing it.

That's why FOX has so many more viewers than MSNBC / CNN combined...the young get their news online and are mostly progressive. MSNBC caters to progressives, however since more progressives are yoiunger they don't watch TV....So it has much less viewers than FOX.....The elderely watch TV a lot.

My gut says that southern POLS will stand with TEA Party (they need their vote). Whereas eastern POLS are more likely to distance themselves from the TeaKlan since they don't need their votes.

At first glance I thought Republican Paul Ryan to the floor to denounce the Teabaggers...
Of course I was wrong... that would have been impressive.
Teabaggers aren't racists, or bigots...
They just hate Muslims, Blacks, Mexicans, Jewish gay men... and anyone else that isn't exactly like them.
I'm really glad I don't live in their idea of a perfect country.

I have a better dog profile picture than you, so I think I speak with moral superiority here when I say you are a silly. And as to your hearsay objection, I respond by saying that these slurs that have been quoted are not offered to prove the truth of the matter asserted. So, according to the definition of hearsay under the federal rules of evidence, this isn't hearsay... and you are still silly.

Beg to differ. It's not hearsay at all, and therefore doesn't come under an exception. It's a verbal act, the same way a libel or an order to commit a murder would be verbal acts. Fall's outside the definition of hearsay altogether.
Which all good fun for us lawyers, but for the lay people here's the real point of our pedantry over the rules of evidence. They were worked out, over certuries, based upon what the life experience of both ordinary lay people and lawyers told them about what kind of evidence was sufficiently credible to be admissible in court.
The testimony of eyewitnesses to having heard a mobster give an order to have someone killed made is good enough to send the mobster to the death house. The testimony of public servants, police officers and news reporters that they heard these words it is surely good enough to anyone whose mind isn't Fox-locked to prove it happened.
For the Fox-locked, however, nothing is good enough. When the inevitable clear tape shows up, it'll be dismissed as a fake. No fact deemed inconsistent with Republican orthadoxy can be admitted to exist.

That's what I was saying with my earlier comment- that it wasn't definitionally hearsay, because it wasn't offered for the truth of the matter asserted (such as is the case with verbal acts). Anyway, I hear you. I don't mind some level of skepticism toward these kind of things, but it bugs me when the skepticism is only there when it conveniently fits in with political leanings.

In a day an age when every single one of us has a video camera on our phones you expect me to believe that NO ONE filmed a loud group of protesters yelling "nigger" and "faggot" in the United States Capitol? How do you know she didn't hear something else? Again I'm not gonna be shocked if video does turn up, I just think maybe it or some actual evidence should be presented before the use of the word "Allegedly" is dropped.

You're a regular Perry Mason. Come on, is it really that hard to believe, after confirmation from from several independent sources, that a bunch of angry, conservative white people yelled the nigger or faggot. I mean the Capital police arrested several of them. Are they in on it too. Since when is video documentation a requirment in believability? Can you produce a video that doesn't show Lewis and Frank being derided or present witnesses that refute that it happened?

I'm not in any tea party. I wouldn't be shocked if they did it and would denounce them if they did. However I see no reason why this wouldn't have been caught on video or audio if it happened. Hell a crowd chanting "nigger" in the United States Capitol is such an awful idea it would destroy the whole movement... I can't believe no one took out their cell and recorded it. I think you all are overlooking that because you want this to be true. It would confirm what so many have already said about tea party people.

When that douchebag lit his underpants on fire to blow up a plane and kill countless "allegedly" was all over the place and if I remember reading right, GOPers were all pissed and the Left mocked them for their (probably fake) outrage. But just like people quoting some of the crazies from FDL, I'm not surprised by some of the things that were said by some of the wingnuts, so it shouldn't be surprising to you. We never know for an absolute certainty, and to some extent all of are statements are always qualified by "allegedly" but I'd imagine that some of these things were said. "Allegedly" was being used in the Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab case because it was a criminal issue. One doesn't want to taint the process, after all.
In the present case, the tea baggers/people/partiers are being accused of a moral offense. There's no need to pull punches. The claims are completely credible and consistent with their general behavior.

Fortunately, they have done us a big service. This kind of nastiness doesn't only offend black and gay people, it offends moderates. It undermines the credibility of everything that the right-wing claims to believe. I am glad that the Teapartiers are finally outed as anti-American values jerks. Are you kidding - gop and the fox'news' network don't have the leadership skill to make this sort of comment to 'there' people. These extremists are their bread n' butter of late - and why would they want to in any way antagonize them. The teabaggers (won't even dignify if with capitalization) are finally able to say in a public forum things that many in the gop have long stood for in silence. the congressional gop will not risk alienating these 'important' swing voters when they think they're gonna need them come November.
the teaparty people (hence a strong contingent of the gop) have ridden patriotism and religion to the dangerous level of nationalistic blindness - they have so fought to justify their own sense of entitlement to the denigration of those they see as different from themself - the ultimate form of selfishness -
teaparty = the new Nationalistic-Selfishness Party: yes friends, they are the new NatSee Party -

1) Why does Ryan want REPUBLICANS to condemn the slurs? The Tea Bag party has plenty of democrats in it, why is he not condemning them himself?
2) As to Barney Frank, who was called "Communist Homosexual", which part is a slur? He is openly gay, and had a boyfriend run a call-boy ring from his house (check the Congressional record, he was censured for it), and then had a boyfriend who was a high-level exec at Fannie mae, whom he protected, by attacking the Bush admin for wanting to investigate Fannie Mae. He accused the Bush admin of "professional lynching" of Fannie Mae's CEO at the time, who is black. It turns out that that CEO commited financial fraud, and that the Bushie were right. Did Ryan condemn Frank for falsely accusing the president for being racist or for the fact that he totally fell on the job in his overview of Sallie Mae? no? exactly.
Frank also has stated that he wants to control the banks and set salary levels for all job levels in the U.S. If that's not communist, what is?
And his demands also come after the bang-up job he's done with everything else: loans, sallie Mae, bank oversights...
Why does Ryan assume that republicans said the N word? How does he know that it wasn't democrats, and why doesn't he condemn anyone (he just whines that republicans need to condemn these people). Republicans did not say that Obama was clean, well-spoken and light-skinned,for a Black man; Reid, Biden and Kennedy did, and all are DEMO-CRITS!

The only individuals who have condemned it are Democrats, and probably some independents. The Republicans are silent on the issue.
You too fail to condemn the slurs by attempting -- and failing -- to point away from yourself at Ryan.
Why are YOU FALSELY claiming that Ryan DIDN'T condemn the hate-speech? -- so YOU can avoid condemning that you APPROVE?

"Tea Bag party has plenty of democrats in it, why is he not condemning them himself?"
The Tea Party has no Democrats in it, stop lying. The whole bowel movement is about hating that a black man is commander in chief. That is the ugly truth.
"2) As to Barney Frank, who was called "Communist Homosexual","
He was actually called a "Faggot".
"Why does Ryan assume that republicans said the N word?"
Because their history of racism and bigotry is well documented.

In fact, when a new "Tea Party" was set up in Nevada recently, the fact that an organizer had any prior involvement with Democrats was enough to condemn it as a "fake" group.
The TP folks started off claiming they weren't affiliated with any party, but at this point it has become clear that only conservatives are welcome, which these days means Dems need not apply.

Everyone here realizes why shooter and co. are demanding "proof" that these ugly incidents happened, right? It's because they don't believe gay and black people to tell the truth, particularly gay and black Democrats.
Despicable.

The 'baggers are exposing themselves as the bigots we've always known them to be. Let them cling to their guns and their hatred as modernity surrounds them. Let them rewrite textbooks and pretend that Jefferson was insignificant and Joe McCarthy was a statesman. Let them long for the eight year period when appearances by the president were rehearsed and invitation only --when a critical t-shirt or bumper sticker would invite harassment and ejection. The teabaggers want a return to the 1950's, when minorities and women knew their places, and white was right. What they fear most is education and compassion, and a generational shift toward making certain that everyone gets an opportunity to define happiness for themselves.
Once this meager step toward insurance reform has been taken and people actually begin to benefit, what will these cowards do?

Those depths are not hard to plumb. I doubt it takes anything close to "profound insight" to fathom the 'bagger mind.

Baggers are bigots masquerading as patriots, is that clear enough? Teabaggers "want our country back," so exactly which country are they referring to? Listen to the epithets hurled at true patriots like John Lewis. Read their signs, observe the lily white constituency, examine their revisionist version of the past eight years. Refute that. You can't, and there will never be enough guns (or biceps, for that matter) to overcome what will occur in a very short while. You lose, and you know that by now or you wouldn't have such a difficult time refuting the truth.

Again you over generalize as if you know what is in the heart of each of these people. What do you consider a patriot?
Teabaggers "want our country back," so exactly which country are they referring to? I'm sure they are referring to their idea of the USA. Same claim as when Dems say the same general statement.
Listen to the epithets hurled at true patriots like John Lewis.
I have tried seriously to listen to the youtube links and I did not hear it. I'm not saying any of it didn't occur, it very may well have and if so I don't condone it. But a few shit heads do not make up all the entirety of the 'baggers'
Read their signs, dude - they are just signs.
observe the lily white constituency - really? What does that really say? It is interesting.
examine their revisionist version of the past eight years. Refute that. Can't as I am not sure what that exactly you are referring to.
and there will never be enough guns (or biceps, for that matter) LOL nice.
to overcome what will occur in a very short while. You lose, lose what? In my opinion we will all lose.
and you know that by now or you wouldn't have such a difficult time refuting the truth. Truth-depends on the paradigm.

Your boys Boehner and Steele have been on the Sunday talk circuit basically admitting that it occurred. Believe it that, if it were a Dem hoax, they would be all over it.

They'll successfully alienate the majority -- and increasingly: wait till they start showing up at the polls armed on election day. That will implicate a lengthy legal history which prohibits anyone other than law enforcement being armed at the polls, and for obvious reasons.

Can't let you get away with that lie. Lesssee, who was Pres? A guy with a W for his middle initial? Ya think he would have allowed any control? Nope! Their thinking was that this kinda stuff happens and a free market will correct itself. So, you bemoan how that worked out, but your blame is totally misplaced. So, credit to you to get half of it right.

OT: Today's NYT story on Pelosi's involvement in resuscitating HCR after the Brown win in MA is a must read. It needs it's own discussion, IMO.
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/21/health/policy/21reconstruct.html?hp
I give Obama credit where credit is due for his involvement and effort in pushing reform over the past weeks, but it seems that Pelosi has been the strongest force behind reform. She outmuscled Rahm on this, who was advising Obama to pursue a slim downed bill.
If (hopefully when) this bill is signed into law, history will show it is has much Pelosi's accomplishment as it is Obama, and I think we will see a very powerful political alliance emerge between the two. She has shown her courage and grit.
