A trio of Democratic lawmakers took to the phones this afternoon to call out Sen. Jim Bunning (R-KY) for his decision to block a month-long extension of federal transportation and highway funds, a move government officials say will leave thousands out of work for the foreseeable future (not to mention the thousands of doctors that will see their income drop.)
Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) joined House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn (SC) and DCCC chair Chris Van Hollen (MD) on the call. All three slammed Bunning for blocking the extension, but Van Hollen's take was a bit more nuanced. He began his comments to reporters by thanking Bunning for blocking the bill.
"Jim Bunning has done more to draw attention to the procedural abuses in the Senate than ever before," Van Hollen said. Compared with Sen. Richard Shelby's (R-AL) short-lived "blanket hold" last month, Van Hollen said Bunning's action has done far more to make the Democrats' point that the GOP is holding up the works in Washington.
"This is part of the wake up call for Americans that Republicans are abusing the rules in the Senate," Van Hollen said.
Klobochar agreed. "To see that one Senator could hold up what pretty much everyone thinks would go through," she said, sounding exasperated at Bunning's move, "well, that just makes no sense."
Clyburn continued the theme of the call, stating that how Bunning could do what he did "is beyond me."
Beyond Van Hollen's claim that Bunning will unite the American people against Republican parliamentary tactics in the Senate, the move by the Kentucky Senator also appears to produced a rare bit of harmony between Democrats in the Senate and the House. The two sides have been at loggerheads over health care reform, cap and trade and other issues for almost the entire year Democrats have controlled both houses of Congress and the White House.
Klobochar seemed happy that Bunning had brought the Democrats together, if only in slamming the GOP.
"We just like doing things with the House!" she said as the call was ending. "We're just trying to get things done here."

It's nice to think so, but I saw two separate reports on this and neither report mentioned the senator or the party that they were from (forgot what channels the reports were on).

I saw a report on the local newz last night - they showed a clip of Biden talking about the effects on those who will be out of work; followed by 2 clips of GOP guys (Bunning and someone else) arguing that these funds aren't being balanced by corresponding cuts, as required per a recent law, or something. That was it.

So why the hell are they letting Bunning get away with it? Reid should haul the Senate into session and schedule a vote ASAP (he should have done it last week). If Bunning tries to object, rule him out of order. Let's see if the R's go to bat for him (not bloody likely).

YES. The Democrats are getting blamed for this, and rightly so. They have the power to stop it today if they would just play hardball. Sadly, Reid is more concerned with collegiality and process than to exercise real leadership. It's hard to be a leader, doubly so in desperate times such as these. He's just not up to the job.

This is such a load of sausage. Bunning is just the convenient face of a process that Democrats allow.
They can change this any time they choose to. All they have to do is decide to do it. They don't, and they won't, because they see more benefit in how it works now. "We WANTED to do the right thing, really! Our hands were tied! Oh is that check for me?"

I never understand the need to beat up your own side when the going gets tough. It is a hell of a lot more helpful to get things done to beat up the enemy of what you want instead of the folks trying everyday to make it happen.

It's the Democrats in the Senate that have the blockage. Jeez Louise, stop yur yappin' and stand up for the working people of America for cryin' out loud. Standing at center court in front of cameras is not the equivalent of scoring. Actually doing something like breaking the fillibuster and keeping the Senate in session until the babies run out of diapers will score points. Otherwise you're just another showboating weasel.

Yes, it's wrong. How? Because legislators shouldn't have to muster a 3/4 majority to change the Senate rules so they can actually go about doing the jobs they were elected to do. Our elected officials shouldn't have to go to extraordinary lengths to pass uncontroversial legislation that averts serious, real-life problems for its own population as a matter of principle. It is truly morally bankrupt to force your peers to clear significant obstacles before they can provide medical care or income to those who depend on it, merely to achieve a political advantage. This man has decided that his constituents' interests are worth hurting our neighbors by depriving them of health care and earned income.
And that's before you even tackle the fact that they'd never be able to corral 67 votes to change a centuries-old tradition simply for this sole instance of abuse. Forget about that and just focus on how twisted it truly is, what Sen. Bunning has done to his own people, because it's far more significant and edifying.

I'm not apologizing. I'm educating these fools who come in, having never commented before, and try to re-frame the argument as a failure of Democrats. I'm not having it.
There's no trust involved. We see Sen. Bunning throwing the proverbial wrench into the machine and then we hear someone argue that it's the Dem's fault for not re-engineering the machine so the wrench isn't a problem. It's a ridiculous argument and you know it.

Is it ridiculous to expect Senator Reid to force Bunning and his colleagues to hold the floor until he relents or collapses? You may not like the rules of the Senate but there they are. There is only one way forward, and that is to force the issue and make the obstructionists filibuster. There is no other way. Or if there is please enlighten me.

I wish it were that simple. This isn't a filibuster in the traditional parliamentarian sense; it's a part of the archaic Senate rules that all Senators abide by. To overcome this hold would require a 3/4 majority (even greater than a super majority) to overturn a Senate rule and the chances of that coming together are nil.
I agree with your position that normal filibusters could be averted by actually forcing them to do it, though. That's a fair point.

If more Senators' livelihoods were at risk, they'd do the right thing. These fatcats all live off lobbyist and industry money, and all they have to do is wring their hands and pretend they can't do anything about it.
Of course, that's a separate issue from the fact that sociopathic hypertribalist authoritarians run the Republican Party...

It's a shame that people's lives have to be so severely affected for people to understand exactly what the consequences of this republican party manoeuvre - obviously a threat to the country showing them what will happen to us if they don't get their way on every single issue - but in the end, I think Van Hollen is correct.
This is political terrorism perpetrated by the Republican party, with the retiring Bunning as their hit-man.
Such horrific actions must not be allowed to happen so easily.

R extremism--the gift that keeps on giving. However much the Ds make a hash of things, the Rs always manage to pull them back from the brink with some reactionary overreach that makes the political middle think twice about casting their lot with looney tunes. Bunning is a few bricks shy of a full load and kudos to Mitch McConnell for taking the political risk involved in putting him out to pasture. Pity you won't find Harry Reid performing any similar public service with the droolers and clowns in his cadre.
That said, even a stopped clock is right twice a day...and Bunning has nailed this right on. The issue isn't whether these extensions should be made but how to pay for them. Bunning wants to pay for them out of already appropriated but unutilized "stimulus" funds rather than increasing the deficit. Makes perfect sense.
So what are these Democrats doing? They have decided that they have a real winner here. On the one hand, they get to do their favorite thing...appropriate more money they don't have. And then they get to complain about a mythological "crisis" created by Bunning that they know doesn't exist and is scheduled to be rectified on a PERMANENT basis later this week. RETROACTIVE TO 1 March.
And it looks like that line of BS is working with their usual tools and lemmings, to judge by some of the comments here. Unfortunately for them, these same folks were already in the tank for their agenda and knowlegeable observors cannot be so easily fooled.
