The Democratic National Committee says that Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele has declined to sign on to a joint statement written by DNC Chairman Tim Kaine that condemns threats made to members of Congress from both parties. The draft text of the statement says that while Steele and Kaine disagree on the health care bill, they would "together call on elected officials of both parties to set an example of the civility we want to see in our citizenry" and ask "all Americans to respect differences of opinion, to refrain from inappropriate forms of intimidation, to reject violence and vandalism, and to scale back rhetoric that might reasonably be misinterpreted by those prone to such behavior."

DNC spokesman Brad Woodhouse told reporters that Kaine sent the letter to Steele today and then phoned him asking the chairman to release a joint bipartisan statement "condemning the threats and acts of vandalism over the past week, calling for an end to such tactics and urging a more civil tone in our politics." "This afternoon, Chairman Steele, through staff, declined Chairman Kaine's offer," Woodhouse said.

RNC spokesman Doug Heye told TPMDC that Steele did reject the request. He said Steele was among the first to condemn threats in an appearance on NBC's "Meet the Press" with Kaine last weekend.

"Gov. Kaine had an opportunity to condemn such activities when he was sitting next to Michael Steele on the set on Meet the Press. He chose not to, and instead decided to use it as an opportunity to raise money," Heye told me in an email. Steele said that neither party should be associated with the racist incidents that happened at the Capitol Saturday during a health care protest.

Heye added:

Obviously, a large majority of Americans - a broad coalition of Republicans, Democrats and Independent - are upset that President Obama, Speaker Pelosi and Majority Leader Reid pushed through health care legislation that increases premiums and raises taxes and did so through strong-arm tactics, closed door meetings and sweetheart deals. Voters have a right to be angry. Unfortunately, some have chosen to engage in language and actions that go too far.

The DNC's letter, dated today, details the many reports of threatening letters, calls and emails sent to members of Congress. Kaine writes:

In the interest of protecting and instilling confidence in our political system, I propose that we issue a joint statement calling for an end to such tactics. A joint statement by the elected Chairs of the major national parties would send a bipartisan signal that this is not how we should conduct our politics in America.

In the interest of acting promptly, I have enclosed a draft for you to consider. I look forward to working with you to finalize the statement and issue it from both of our Committees.

Here is the proposed draft statement included in the letter.

As leaders of our respective national parties, we want to speak to all Americans about the importance of conducting our political debates in a manner and tone that respects our political system and demonstrates to the world the strength of our democracy.

We have a system of government that allows the great issues of our day to be resolved peacefully and civilly and that serves as a beacon of hope to those around the world who yearn for political freedom, political stability, and governing without the threat of violence.

We have a system that allows people to express approval of their government or change the party in power peaceably through the ballot box.

Our Constitution affords Americans the right to assemble and petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Clearly, we have different positions on the merits of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. However, we together call on elected officials of both parties to set an example of the civility we want to see in our citizenry. We also call on all Americans to respect differences of opinion, to refrain from inappropriate forms of intimidation, to reject violence and vandalism, and to scale back rhetoric that might reasonably be misinterpreted by those prone to such behavior.

"We have a system that allows people to express approval of their government or change the party in power peaceably through the ballot box."

Doesn't fit Steele's narrative about American tyranny.

Nice try Kaine.

He didn't get permission from Rush thus wasn't allowed to sign.

Sad thing is, I'm only being semi-snarky. He can't sign stuff like this if he wants to keep the title of titular head of the Republican Party. In reality his only responsibility is to repeat accepted talking points. Signing a non-aggression pact with the Democrats is most certainly not an approved activity. He doesn't have the authority for that.

If Steele signed that, he'd be on the receiving end of some faxed nooses, as he knows very well.

The Republican Party should hold their next convention in Stockholm; they have the Syndrome, if not the socialism.

Steele also has a mean, adulterous, gold-digging "Catholic" sister, "Dr." Monica Turner Tyson, whom I am 95% certain ran me out of a women's clothing store with insults about my disfigured face. Before she bred meal tickets by Mike Tyson, she also bred meal tickets by a MARRIED drug trafficker. Before that, she was screwing Marion Barry at tax payer's expense through some phony city contract "charm and modeling school". Barry has been putting his hos on city contracts for DECADES. You'd think Barry was a RePig!

I'm glad the people threatening Democrats with violence and civil war are christian, patriotic terrorists, working with the approval of every elected Republican and right-wing church in the country, instead of some other kinds of possible terrorists. Imagine if they were people who DIDN'T love America and equal protection under the law.

Actually you have no idea who did what. You are just venting prejudice and bigotry.

Considering how often Democrats are crying "VICTIM" and being exposed as frauds, any more claims are suspect at best and hardly worthy of note. Prayer vigils are not angry demonstrations.
The latest is a Driehaus spokesman claim that a rock was thrown through "the Hamilton County Democratic Party headquarters in Cincinnati," on the 30th floor. Nice throw.
There was no spitting, no N-word, no F-word, and the cut gas line went to a grill.

In point of fact, every attempt was made to provoke such language and record it, but nothing happened. This goes to a long line of fabricated incidents like the fake noose on the door of a black Columbia professor, placed there herself.

Stop being a useful idiot and start thinking for yourself. Steele is right for not buying into continued Democrat fraud.

"SECONDLY I have said this to you 5 times and I'll say it again. Everyone admitted the Spitting and N word happened. The republicans have admitted it. FOX NEWS admitted it. FOX was the company that ran an O'Keefe video where an Acorn worker said she had murdered her ex-husband. Yes ran it for a week... AFTER the police confirmed the guy was unharmed and very much alive. Even THEY had to admit it happened. The evidance was corroborated that much that they had not choice

IT HAPPENED. Everyone admits it happened... And you when were shown a video of the guy getting spat at and all you said was "well he wont walk so near the crowd in future" and how you are back to denying it happened again."

As for "You're going to include insulting somebody? That's rich." Yes yes its always the partners whos getting beaten up's fault. And when he puts her in the hospital, its her fault casue she is too much of a pussy to take it. He didn't hit her THAT hard. She only wants to make him look bad.

Minimizing the crime is the way out of a coward. After all the gas line lead to a grill, so that was ok, right? Oh, sorry that was "Unsubstantiated" too

Probably did it himself to make you look bad. Yeah that must be it

"The latest is a Driehaus spokesman claim that a rock was thrown through "the Hamilton County Democratic Party headquarters in Cincinnati," on the 30th floor. "

The latest. You were peddling that bullshit earlier in the week. I'll tell you now what you were told then, the brick was thrown though the constituency office on the ground floor, as you well know. But still you gotta have sympathy for Driehaus like your idol Boehman did. "Take Steve Driehaus for example. He may be a dead man, He cant go home to home to the west side of Cincinnati" No veiled death threat there...

"There was no spitting, no N-word, no F-word, and the cut gas line went to a grill.

In point of fact, every attempt was made to provoke such language and record it, but nothing happened. This goes to a long line of fabricated incidents like the fake noose on the door of a black Columbia professor, placed there herself."

You lying little weasel. The gas line went to a grill. Wow if you knew anything about Gas you would know that if it gets turned on with a deliberate leak it will explode. Where it goes makes no difference. SOMEONE WENT AND SLASHED THE GAS LINE NEXT TO A PROPANE TANK.

SECONDLY I have said this to you 5 times and I'll say it again. Everyone admitted the Spitting and N word happened. The republicans have admitted it. FOX NEWS admitted it. IT HAPPENED. Everyone admits it happened... And you when were shown a video of the guy getting spat at and all you said was "well he wont walk so near the crowd in future" and how you are back to denying it happened again.

You are a liar without shame. And you know you are lying. And when challenged all you can do is blame the victim, minimize it somehow and try and sway the ignorant with yet more lying.

30th floor? Nope. You've been reading too many gooper talking points. If you go to the Hamilton County Democratic Party web page, you can see a picture of the broken window, and the view is obviously from a ground floor. http://www.hamiltoncountydems.org/

Moreover, that web page gives the address of their headquarters as 6109 Webbland Pl. in Cincinnati. If you enter that address into Google maps, click on the marker, and then click on the "Street view" link that pops up, you can see that it is a 2-story building, with a sign in front that clearly says "Hamilton County Democratic Party".

I don't know what other building you deniers have in mind, but it's obviously not the right one.

What strikes me as particularly silly is this new Republican culture of victimization and their constant whimpering coming from Republicans about conspiracies to silence their voice, despite the fact that fox, cnn, and various arms of the MSM take pains to comply and recite talking points delivered by the RNC, as exemplified by the fact that the Cantor office incident is the only "vandalism" to garner headline status.

The self-pity, conspiracy theories, and paranoid delusions of the New Right echos the story-line Republicans give me about the flower-children of the 60's. So hearing about all the Republican Woodstock events isn't such a surprise to me.

I do have one question though :
The lefties of Woodstock could point to the LSD, and other psycho-actives (never mind the Hoover FBI) to blame for their paranoid delusions. What's the Republicans excuse? Does it turn out that Fox News is a more powerful hallucinogen then LSD?

I still have not figured out the Michael Steele appeal for the GOP except that he, like Obama, considers himself to be an African American. Other than his race, I see not one reason why the Republicans would have him in the chief party leadership position. The fact that he is lousy at it seems moot. Don't get me wrong...what's bad for the GOP is generally good for the majority of most Americans and the world in general, but it is shocking - yet fascinating - to see how fast and far the party is self-destructing.

That's just idiotic. First, Kaine didn't sufficiently condemn it on Meet the Press so now the subject is off the table??? Meet the Press ws the one and only opportunityto talk about it???

Second, just when was it that MtP became such an amazing and effective fundraising vehicle? So is that what Republicans are doing when they go on the show? Raising money? Because I don't recall ever hearing an appeals for contributions on that show myself. I dunno. Maybe they've been transmitted in Morse Code? Sign Language? Subliminal messaging?

If Republicans don't want to be associated with racist incidents that happen during health care protests, they should probably stop going to them. Because its obvious that they sure as hell can't control them.

It's comforting to know that you are a whack denier that doesn't even know what your own party is owning up to. So, that puts you squarely in the fringe, shooter. Must be awful lonely out there.

Lies, deception, disarray, struggling for their message - that is the state of the leaders of the conservative movement today. If I were a conservative, I'd be a bit frustrated, too. When history would typically hand the party not in party a win this November, the GOP are running out of time to even define themselves in any kind of light favorable to voters. With their recent descent, it looks like they'll stay in the closet for awhile. And that's really too bad because I honestly feel that there is a place in public discourse for their views.
