Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-IL), who had previously said he would vote against the health care bill based on restrictive immigration provisions, has now switched again -- saying he will vote yes.
Gutierrez made the announcement at a press conference with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. Gutierrez had previously been a yes vote already on the House bill back in November, so his decision to vote for the bill is not a gain for the Democrats -- but it is the avoidance of a loss of one vote, in their fight to reach the magic number of 216.

This is great news.
I do hope he got some promises about movement on Comprehensive Immigration Reform this year in exchange for his vote.

I wonder what he'll say when folks try to much-up the eventual immigration reform bill with their own private pet issues and withholds their vote on what will be another close vote.

Looks like Kucinich was the start of a stampede to the entrances.
I thought this might happen. It made perfect sense for Progressives to tell Pelosi that they would not support even more compromises to the GOP and the Blue Dogs. But now that we have got into the home stretch it is clear that Progressives are getting 90% of what they wanted and 120% of what they might realistically have hoped to achieve.
This is only phase one of what will be a long process. The GOP hated Medicare and fought tooth and nail against it. Then they were the ones who put through the prescription drug coverage in part D. It will be the same here.
I am not that bothered about the lack of a public option. If the health care insurance market is not sufficiently competitive, one can be created.
The next area for concern is likely to be the process for developing and patenting drugs. The patent system has proved effective in some ways, but it is far from perfect.

Hey, Lousgirl! I'm doing great. I stay fit battling anti-HCR trolls and asswipes!
I'm going out on a limb here to say that the Rep. from MA won't vote "NO", especially with labor giving the bill a thumbs up.

I too thought he'd get over himself and vote yes eventually, but why did he have to be so dramatic about it?

This one isn't all that surprising.
I have an acquaintance that knows the Congressman a bit (not on his staff or anything, but he's heavily involved in Chicago Democratic politics and is a Gutierrez ally) - when the Gutierrez news broke, I called my buddy up irate --- immediately launching into tirade about "there goes my vote when he decides to run for mayor", etc....
After patiently waiting for me to rant myself out, he then wryly asked "If you really think he's that stupid, why on earth would you have supported him if he ran for mayor? He's not that stupid, if his vote is needed, his vote will be there."
Haven't been too concerned about Luis Gutierrez's vote since...

Alert! Tell Washington that the pro-amnesty rally does not represent you... or most Americans!
This weekend will be a historical turning point in the illegal alien occupation of our country. We as Americans can stand back disinterested and watch, or do the right thing for 15 million US jobless labor force that is climbing to new heights? ITS INCORRIGIBLE that our President-Senate-House would try to pass a suspect CIR (AMNESTY) when Americans are hurting.
NumbersUSA is mobilizing there members in assisting in stopping every amnesty since 2000, and now revving up resources to do the same this time around. Starting FRIDAY (3/19) NumbersUSA on Day 1 will be begin a nationwide effort for activists to visit Member's local Congressional offices at 1:30 p.m. EDT with a signed letter.SATURDAY (3/20) -- On Day 2, they will launch our faxing and petition campaign. When the Members return to their Washington offices, we need them to see your HUGE RESPONSE. It's also a Social Networking Day, so they want members to join them on Face book and Twitter.SUNDAY (3/21) - Day 3, the pro-amnesty organizers will host their rally on the National Mall in Washington D.C., and many anti-immigration organizations will appear there too. MONDAY (3/22) - Day 4, it's NumbersUSA National Call Campaign. The pro-amnesty supporters will be walking the halls of Congress urging Members to pass an amnesty. So It will be very important for patriotic Americans make their phone calls and have the Capitol office phones ringing incessantly during their visit. Find all this information and more at Numbersusa You can also harass your Senator at 202-224-3121. jamming the switchboards in the capitol.

I've got a story about this:
Since I live in the 60647, I walked over to Mr Gutierrez' local office here in Chicago to make my outrage known about his threatened NO vote.
I never saw a political office worker backtrack so fast. This was two days ago. She assured me that Gutierrez was just saying that to try to focus attention on the immigration issue. I just mentioned that he shouldn't expect a health care bill to reform immigration too.
Apparently, this personal contact with representatives stuff really works.

How 'bout "No bill-No trabajo" that is easily understandable
& to the point. I'm not trying to be rude & know he has already switched or more like got around to the proper vote, I'm just trying to help him with his constituents.
Gracias Luis y de nada.
