Sen. Blanche Lincoln (D-AR) got a primary challenger this morning, but she says she's not worried about squaring off against members of her own party ready to spend money to prevent Lincoln from being reelected.
In an interview with the AP over the weekend, Lincoln was asked about a Lt. Gov. Bill Halter -- the man who progressive groups hope will defeat her in the Democratic primary -- and said she wasn't sweating the primary. Lincoln said what she called a record of being one of the Senate's few true bipartisans will see her through to victory.
Answering her progressive critics, Lincoln told the AP she's not the only one pushing back against them on a public option and EFCA.
"It's important to note that I'm not the only Democrat in those positions," Lincoln told the AP. "There are other moderates, and there are moderate Republicans."
Lincoln said her willingness to stand against national Democratic figures will give her the advantage in a primary race.
"I think I can be very clear to Arkansans, and I think they will understand, that when President Obama presents a good idea and it's good for Arkansas I can be supportive," Lincoln told the AP. "If it's something that's not good for Arkansas, not good for the people or the industries of Arkansas, it's going to be something I'm not going to support."
But Republicans, who Lincoln says she's been willing to reach out to, aren't interested in giving her bipartisan credibility. In a statement this morning, the NRSC said Halter's entrance into the primary really means that nobody in Arkansas likes Lincoln anymore.
"Arkansans are tired of the status quo under the Obama Administration and they are looking to elect a Senator who will fight for much-needed checks and balances in Washington this November," NRSC spokesperson Amber Marchand said. Marchand added that both Lincoln and Halter "are completely out of step with Arkansas' mainstream values."

If Lincoln is not smart enough to see through all that GOP propaganda, then Bill Halter is the least of her worries.
Politically, she is trying to out-Republican the Republicans. However, when given the choice between a real Republican and Republican-lite, like Lincoln, people will choose the real Republican every time. Put another way, if Lincoln is not going to stand up for Democratic principles, why in hell would any Democrat vote for her?
IMHO, it is doubtful that Lincoln has enough on the ball to understand what Bill Halter represents.

"However, when given the choice between a real Republican and Republican-lite, like Lincoln, people will choose the real Republican every time."
People always say this. How, then, do you explain Lincoln's election to the House in 1992 and re-election in 1994? Her election to the Senate in 1998 and re-election in 2004? Her record throughout has been what we call Republican-lite. That's the record she runs on.
I'm no big fan of Lincoln. But, historically, she has had quite a bit of success getting voters to choose her over real Republicans. Somehow, all the other conservative Democrats serving in Congress got elected, too.

Because Arkansas has been a relatively reliable Democratic state on the federal level. 3 of 4 House members and both Senators are Democrats. In fact 2 of the 3 House Democrats ran unopposed.
But things are changing and the state is tilting more Republican. If they want a Republican, they will choose one.

Reliably Democratic because they're often willing to choose Republican-lite over Republican.

Arkansas is the only southern that has more Democrats than Republicans in congress.
Republican-lite Democrats have run in MS, AL, SC, TX, GA, NC but come up short.

IMHO, Lincoln's Republican-lite record is no longer tenable.
As a Democrat, I might hold my nose and vote for her, IF the alternative was a real Republican. However, Lincoln's record does not give Democrats ANY reason to vote for her. Just a rather lame reason to vote against her opponent.
With her poll numbers in the 30's and the electorate's anti-incumbent mood, do you seriously think Lincoln has a snowball's chance in hell of being re-elected? Really?

Democrats also control the state government in Arkansas. The thing that regular K is missing is that Democrat from Arkansas is from Arkansas is more conservative (on Social issues, not fiscal issues) than a Democrat from the east or west coast.
Lincoln's problem is that the President is Black, pure and simple.
More broadly, the problem that Democrats have is that poor and so-called conservative whites can't separate their emotional dislike and distrust of Democrats from their analysis of the policies.

She will lose the general election, she needs to drop out now and give a fresh face and an outside DC candidate a chance.
As a matter of fact that should be the meme from our side - Drop out Now Blanche!

Actually, she should stay in long enough for Bill Halter to become the anti-Blanche Lincoln.

Lincoln's cognitive disability – evidenced by her statement that "there are moderate Republicans" – should disqualify her.

Another thought – if other DINO senators see the emergence of national Democratic opposition to their re-election maybe they won't be so quick to cave to the Right on critical issues.

Most candidates in a primary fight don't run to the middle, but rather try and appeal to their base. Is Arkansas a open or closed primary? If it's closed she could be in real trouble as the Halter supporters will be very motivated, and other than her big business benefactors I can't see anybody too excited about getting Lincoln elected.
