Rep. Stephen Lynch (D-MA) says he is still "firmly a 'no' vote" after meeting one-on-one with President Obama yesterday afternoon.
The Boston Herald reports that Lynch, emerging from the 40-minute meeting, was unswayed.
"The president was courteous and generous with his time," Lynch said. "The president asked me if there was anything he could do that I should tell him, and I told him, 'I have been over this bill and I still wasn't satisfied.' "
"I continue to be opposed to the bill," he said.
Lynch, who voted for the bill in November, announced this week that he opposed the Senate bill, as well as the "deem and pass" process to pass it with reconciliation fixes in one vote. He said he was particularly opposed to the Cadillac plan tax, but also said the bill doesn't go far enough.
"There's one thing. If they put reform back in the health reform bill, that would change my position," he told reporters yesterday.

The people in MA already have universal health care, but many can't afford to get care even though they pay premiums. This is exactly the kind of coverage we'll have in the rest of the country with this bill. Insurance companies don't really give a shit if you can afford care as long as you, or the government, pays those premiums. In a lot of ways this bill is just another transfer of wealth. I'm sure Lynch gave more specifics than we see in the little blurb here.

dick c: It is not true that "many can't afford to get care even though they pay premiums" in Massachusetts.
Lynch did not give any more specifics. He's just full of it. He has no good reason for voting against the bill, except perhaps some crazy idea that he's going to be viable in a Dem primary for Scott Brown's Senate seat in 2 years, which is laughable.
He blamed the so-called Cadillac tax, but the Unions are supporting the bill, so that makes no sense. It was calculated that it would impact fewer than 2000 households in Massachusetts, mostly high income not Union.

Plus, anyone who votes against health care for millions of Americans, knowing full well that this is the only shot for at least another 15 years or so, based on stupid House procedural rules that no one in America knows or cares about, is either an idiot or a liar.
Or in Lynch's case, perhaps both.

Of course, there is NOTHING stopping any other state from doing what Massachusetts did. Why does every problem have to be solved federally?
You want a MA style system, go pass it. You want a single-payer system, go pass it. You want wide open, no holds-barred competition, go pass it. There would be very few limits on what a state could not do.

Except Lynch is hardly a 'progressive' -- he's just another Shadeggian "I'll say whatever covers my ass" obstructionist.
Lynch has a decidedly blue dog/conservative voting record, and in the context of the health bill ---
- Lynch DOES have a pretty good labor record
- Lynch has one of the lowest NARAL voting records.
Sooo... Lynch, so far as the health bill is concerned, is all about abortion and the excise tax.
Given that the unions are on board with the excise fixes in the reconciliation bill, not seeing that as an excuse (maybe I could give him a pass if he brought some MA/Boston area COLA numbers to the table saying even the sky high new limit hurts his constituents).
Stephen Lynch is simply trying to pretend he's fighting the 'progressive' fight to cover his flank. If the FDL posse wants to fall for that shite, well... have at it.
Labor has promised to pull backing from no voters and given that Lynch is a decidedly blue dog, it would puzzle me why progressives would want to cover his flank.
He ought to be primaried if he votes no, even if his vote is meaningless.

It's not surprising someone so craven to prefer women get secret back alley abortions rather than having access to clinics and trained doctors doesn't mind having blood on his hands of the uninsured. This guy is a fundamentally broken human bing. What astounds me is any "progressive" who is stupid enough to believe he's taking any sort of stand for them. This guy has never been a friend to progressives or liberals. The only saving grace around Lynch is that he does have a strong labor record... but that's the extent of his 'progressive' bonafides.
They guy's been in congress for almost 10 years. His voting record and public statements shouldn't be a mystery to anyone - and if "pure" progressives want to be taken seriously, they need to become serious and stop playing the black and white game of "with me or against me."

2) There are no real protection for 'Oversight and Accountability' to prevent and/or correct Fraud, Waste and Abuse.

I'm in Lynch's district. I callled and gave his Washington office an earful this morning because I think his stance on this is completely disingenuous (Kucinich is voting for it for heaven's sake) and because it's completely inconsistent - I've called before about just about every issue (bailouts, financial regulation, cap and trade, the first house vote on health care) and his office has never taken a public stance on any of those issues before a vote. And yet this one they come out as a strong NO on?
I've already emailed my Town Democratic committee trying to find out if there's a primary challenger if he votes no on this thing and volunteering to help on whatever campaign will unseat him in the event he votes no.

It Should Be Instructive to All that Mr. Lynch, like Mr. Stupak is "pro life".
I liken Mr. Lynch and others actions to the Tragedy of the Commons: a situation in which multiple individuals (Mr. Stupak, Mr. Lynch, and Mr.Arcuri so far), acting independently, and solely and rationally consulting their own self-interest, will ultimately deplete a shared limited resource, (in this case health care for 30 million working poor) even when it is clear that it is not in anyone's long-term interest for this to happen.
If these men rule the day, this is a tragedy. I am saddened by his and their actions, not entirely surprised, but saddened. Mr. Lynch is a part of the Pro-life conference in the HOR, but he doesn't say this to his constituents because he realizes in S. Boston, they might actually fire him for saying so, Mr. Lynch isn't fighting the good fight, he is fighting against women. I hope his constituents realize this, and take the appropriate action. He has a pro-life voting record and he received a 25% pro-choice score from NARAL in 2006. Don't be so sure Mr. Lynch fights any fight but his own, against poor women, who don't have access to health care.

Here is a (presumably) partial list of folks who apparently work at Arcuri's office:
Sam Marchio, Chief of Staff
Chris Wilcox, Legislative Director/Counsel
Melinda Becker, Legislative and Press Aide
Roxanne Yaghoubi, Legislative Correspondent
Jay Biba, Press Secretary/Dir. of Special Projects
Mark Cornell, Scheduler/Press Assistant
Charles Greco, Staff Assistant
Joe Johnson, District Director
Pete Scalise, Deputy District Director
Connie Wood, District Scheduler
Pat Smith, Caseworker/Field Representative
Jason Phelps, Caseworker/Field Representative
Sarah Bormann, Caseworker/Field Representative
Liz Gustafson, Staff Assistant
I think folks should post a similar list of folks who work in Representative Lynch's office.
And I think folks who know these people or have access to them should send them the following message: if Arcuri and Lynch help take down HCR and they don't immediately resign, they will never work again in the Democratic Party.
This issue is that important. If you don't support HCR on this vote, and if you're not willing to resign over it, then you simply don't belong in the Democratic Party.

The man knows how to read a poll (unlike Obama's people). Coakley lost MA because this health bill doesn't even remotely match democratic campaign promises (and she didn't even give lip service to fighting for a better bill). A MA politician would be a fucking idiot to vote for this POS. There are 50% independents in your state. Poll after poll shows: We. Hate. The. Obama. Bill. Democrats don't have the numbers to win without us.
IMO, November is going to be a bloodbath. Strong-arming the left wing can maybe pass the thing ... but it will cost you seats in the election. Obama "won" by turning almost every traditional democratic constituency into a total loser. He didn't beat the republicans, didn't even fight, he's too chickenshit for that. He beat the liberals.
Obama and his band of conservative supporters here at TPM and elsewhere took the win for their corporate masters. Yay! Now they are intent on driving out the few remaining democrats with morals and ensuring that the party is 100% Blue Dog. Obama Democrats are the neocons of the post-partisan era.

There are varying strains of blue collar conservatives/white collar progressives and anything in between depending on the issue in Lynch's district. Reagan Democrat Racism and Anti-Elite resentful crabbism is not always far from the surface in attitudes, values, and relations. That said, times are changing and I think Lynch is trying to move where he can conceptually while deeply and strongly anchored to the triple-decker milieu that brung'm to where he is now. He would be wise to pay attention to the large network of Nuns who have come out in support of this bill. [http://www.networklobby.org/issues/2009%20Issue%20Agenda/healthcare_page.htm]
He needs to stand with Sister Carol Keehan of the Catholic Health Association and kick Stupak and the bishops to the curb.
This would make him viable statewide if he is indeed interested in retiring Scott Brown.
Also, he should stop listening to these dirtbags and their ilk:
Dennis & Callahan

It is a very popular local radio sports show with a rightwing stink to it.

I just spoke to a person from Lynch's district who said that she and a friend called and spoke with a rep from his office. They were both told that Lynch is NOT a definite no but is only "leaning" in that direction. So keep up the calls.

Where he is actually leaning is to a strong primary challenge. This guy clearly has no loyalty or conviction to anything but survival. Threaten that & he will relent faster than you can say "Tea Party". Health care reform as it turns out is also just one giant expos~e. (sorry, couldn't make that work)
