In a speech today in Iowa, President Obama dared Republicans to make good on their threat to run on repealing health care reform.

"Now that we passed it, they're already promising to repeal it. They're actually going to run on a platform of repeal this November," Obama said. "And my attitude is, 'Go for it.'"

"If they wanna have that fight, we can have it," he went on. "Because I don't believe the American people are gonna put the insurance industry back in the driver's seat. We've already been there, we're not going back. This country's moving forward."

More on Obama's speech here.

I love this new aura of confidence on the part of Obama and the Dems. Now let's keep rolling and pass more of the legislative agenda Dems ran on: Financial reform, Climate change, the whole deal. The more the Dems pass the better off the nation and the world will be, and the better Dem legislators will do in 2012.

They can repeal the bad parts, leave some of the good ones, let the SCOTUS strike the unconstitutional parts, then that'll effectively cripple this POS horse of a different color.

Hilarious isn't it? That's one thing liberals have over right-wingers a sense of humor.

Of course there was "An American Carol" with a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 12% and the Fox News comedy fail "A Half-Hour New Hour" with a laugh-tracked existence of 15 episodes.

Humor has to have an element of truth to be funny...Libs are just whiny, snarky, and too mean spirited to be funny when talking about real issues, they don't have the truth on their side...Their humor is conjecture-based.

Have to say, when things seem a little uncertain, when I start worrying a little about the mid-term or may be start feeling agitated with the relentless GOP-nastiness, I hear him speak and I feel reassured and confident.

The best thing that we can have going into the mid-term election is an extremely popular President. Well, other than a low un-employment rate, that is.

I wouldn't quite call him "extremely" popular. His approval rating is barely at 50%. Passing health care reform stopped the bleeding for Obama and the Dems, but it didn't heal them completely.

Obama did what he promised in the campaign, passed an HCR bill. He campaigned on it, was elected to do it, and he did it. Promise. Election. Policy. What part of democracy didn't you understand there?

Are you sure this comment violates TPM's Terms of Service?

March 25, 2010 5:06 PM    in reply to CityGuy

Now, be honest. He campaigned on something very different from the bill he is now touting. He promised unequivocally a public option (which was the keystone of his plan during the campaign) and he absolutely vowed to oppose any mandate forcing people to buy insurance. We have no public option (or any other competition included in the law) and it is now compulsory to buy health insurance or be fined. That is not exactly as you are presenting it is it?

Reply | Flag Abuse

Are you sure this comment violates TPM's Terms of Service?

March 25, 2010 5:51 PM    in reply to oleeb

It IS how he is presenting it if you consider the common sense realities of the law making process. The elimination of the public option & the inclusion of mandatory health coverage are the sad realities of a political process that demands compromise as a pre-requisite of forward movement. Most here viewed the President's campaign commitments as his sincere intent & the resultant bill as 'what could realistically be passed in this 1st effort'. So although it would be easy to jump on the details of a bill so complicated & difficult we've struggled with it for over 100yrs & cry "you lied", we opt to understand reality & score him for trying & succeeding to the extent he did.

So from that perspective...Promise. Election. Policy.

I fail to understand why the Democrats passed what they themselves call a flawed bill.

The idea that they couldn't get a better bill passed is ludicrous on the face of it. They actually negotiated with themselves to dumb down this legislation.

Their promise to "fix" it at some later date is really a bait and switch. If they think they can fix it later and improve it, they could have done that from the start.

The Democrats missed a golden opportunity - to create a great bill for the American people and challenge Senators and Representatives to vote either for "We the People" or for the Health Insurance Companies. Then, if the bill doesn't pass, trusting the American voters to replace those who voted against the interests of those people they are supposed to represent.

Sarcasm, or snark, is generally best employed when your audience agrees with you. That way, the implicit joke is understood by all. If the audience tends to disagree with you, the sarcasm won't generally make sense, or create appreciation. You might do better with something more direct, like name-calling, a straw man argument, or predicting the end of civilization.

I'm an Iowa City resident and had to check out the local Tea Party protest ahead of Obama's speech here. Yes, there were some of the usual obnoxious signs and yes, the guy on the bullhorn seemed oblivious to overloading it so that his diatribes came out even more unintelligable. But what struck me was how desperate and pitiful they were. Their "cause" is clearly flawed as it so easily drifted from fiscal issues to hatred of some agenda other than their own and their "plan" is unknowable. I hope Obama (Hussein) continues to have victories and hope that the angry, unhearing, protesters continue to show what a dead end they are. Perhaps like a old, used up, snake skin, we will shed off this dead stuff. We had better.

The basic problem the Rs have in this upcoming election cycle is that they cannot convince their usual donors that the R's can sway enough voters to vote them back in power. And the reason is simple - the big donors are not stupid and see plainly that the R's platform is based on outright lies and that such platform is not likely to sway a large number of voters. Thus, the big R donors will not spring the money, and the R's are going to be in big trouble come November.

The R's have been ahead of the Dims for months now in congressional polls I think they probably are honing in on double digits after this mafio'so machination in the Congress and Senate got The People really even more riled. If they try something stupid like Cap'n'Rape, their could be even further unrest, until the elected start acting like elected and not minor deities they seem to think they are.

"Because I don't believe the American people are gonna put the insurance industry back in the driver's seat."

Obama promised healthcare lobbyists that there would be no public option (per NY Times, via Huffpost: http://huff.to/9kjTZ9), even while telling the public that he supported one. I'm happy the bill passed but the idea that the insurance industry isn't in the driver's seat is ludicrous and dishonest. There's a reason their collective stock went up after the bill was signed.
