Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid defended himself to progressive reporters, pundits and bloggers today, blaming the Republicans for the sluggish pace of the Senate and calling for filibuster reform.

Reid (D-NV) said no one complained at first about the use of the spitball in baseball, but "the ball got wetter and wetter." He said the same is true of the filibuster in the Senate, citing the 67 times he had to use the long process of invoking cloture on mostly mundane legislation last year.

The senate is "likely going to have to make some changes," Reid said at the Progressive Media Summit hosted by the Senate Democrats today on Capitol Hill. "Republicans have abused the filibuster," he said.

Several senators this year have endorsed making a change to filibuster rules, something that would happen when the new Congress is sworn in next January.

Reid said he was criticized for dropping a smaller jobs bill than originally intended, and said because of GOP obstruction "most of our work is going to be hitting singles this year."

The majority leader said progress on other issues will come with filibuster reform.

Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) introduced Reid at the event and said Democrats failed at first to hammer the GOP for obstructionism.

"Our biggest mistake was trying to govern. Our errors have been on trying to get things done," Stabenow said. "We've got to be smarter and tougher and we know that."

Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) added in his remarks that Democrats need to "crystallize" obstruction and showcase incidents like the Bunning blockade to highlight the real effects parliamentary tactics have on voters.

Late Update: Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) announced later at the summit he will be holding hearings on filibuster reform.

Reid let the GOP get away with it and is part of the problem.

I do not see how you can blame Reid. These Republicans have filibustered everything: including a jobs bill during the worst economic period in 75 years, and a defense appropriations bill while we have two wars going on. You can count on one hand the total number of individual "Yea" votes Republican Senators have made in favor of anything that the Senate leadership has brought up. They are the definition of irresponsible. Our "independent" press may be at fault for not holding them to account, and maybe Democrats should be jumping up and down screaming about it, but at the end of the day I think it is Republican Senators that need to be blamed for their own bad behavior.

The Dems don't highlight and excoriate the GOP enough. The GOPers screamed when the Dems wanted to cut off funding for Iraq. Called them disloyal. Of course, the Dems won seats then, but they couldn't make good on their promises.

You can "blame Reid", because you know damned well that if the shoe had been on the other foot, any Dem attempt at obstructionsim like that would have been shut down and rolled-over in approximately 10 seconds.

And here we are, on the side of the angels, allegedly... and we don't have that kind of effective and lethal moxie. At the beginning of the Obama presidency and its Congressional majority, we used to joke about how the Dems could "snatch defeat from the jaws of victory".

Sonofabitch, they did it again.

Correct. Reid is in charge of the Republicans. He could have made them not filibuster!

Damn that Reid!!

He maybe could have done a better job with Max Baucus and the HCR bill. Last i checked, Baucus was a Dem.

And that was when he, theoretically, had enough votes to squash a filibuster. What do you think Reid will be able to achieve between now and election day?

Did Baucus filibuster HCR? No? Then why is that relevant to this discussion about the filibuster?

Conflating the issues.

You want "issues" set straight? No problem.

Let's start with the fact that the Republicans didn't actually filibuster anything.

It was the mere threat that they might gum up the works that caused Harry and the Dems to cave... because, God forbid, we don't get anything done! Or something...

You really should bone up on Senate rules before making a complete ass of yourself. Too late!

The discussion is about Harry Reid, and whether or not he has what it takes to get the Democratic agenda through the Senate. As majority leader, that task falls on his shoulders.

He dropped the ball, big time, when he had a filibuster proof majority. What makes you think he'll even be around to try to change the rules when the next Congress is sworn in in January?

The first step towards solving a problem is admitting that one exists. Pretending that it doesn't, or avoiding a conversation because you want to believe it's not relevant, doesn't really accomplish much, does it?

Nope. My post was about the filibuster. You turned it into some bullshit to fit your narrative.

For a person who is right twice a day, you certainly are full of yourself. Now, go back to your own damn "boner", please.

Never mind, Barry. You're dealing with a documented serial liar of Palinesque stature who, when confronted with mountains of evidence documenting his lies (as I did, for example, with his "Obama never campaigned on the public option" lie), says "You have Too Much Evidence, and I can't be bothered to read it", and runs away. That, and dives straight into the gutter with the fact-free ad hominems. Straight outta the Palin playbook.

Still, having a lower threshold for passing legislation doesn't hurt whether your leader is hero or a weenie.

"Our biggest mistake was trying to govern. Our errors have been on trying to get things done," Stabenow said.

True enough. The Democrats were ignoring the viciously one-sided hardball tactics they'd seen them play during Bush, but they wrongly assumed they would fall in line and act like normal senators once Democrats controlled both houses and the WH. But no, Republicans have used every tiny little dirty tactic they could to block Democratic success.

It really is time for the Democrats to wake up to the fact that their 'partners across the aisle' are not partners but sworn enemies.

It would put my mind at ease if there were some mechanism by which Congress were prevented from passing patently unconstitutional bills that have to be implemented (that is, somebody actually sent to jail or whatever) before the Supreme Court can act.

Don't worry, the minute the Republican's get back in the minority I am sure the will do away with the filibuster.
Heaven forbid they are forced to operate on a level playing field.
