In an interview aired last night on Greta Van Susteren's show on Fox News, Rep. Bart Stupak (D-MI) said that the top Democratic leadership have not approached him about the health care bill.
"Has the Speaker come to you since I last spoke to you last week," said Van Susteren "or even Congressman Steny Hoyer, anyone come to you in the top leadership and talked to you, said down and said, you know, What's your problem?"
Stupak's answer: "No."
"Don't you find that unusual, if they want you and your 11 others?" Van Susteren asked.
Stupak said no, he did not find it usual. When asked why, he said: "Because they disagree me with on the issue, so they'll wait until the last minute and see if they can run -- do an end run, get the votes without us."

He is dumber than I thought. Note to Stupak: if you state that you will not support the bill why are you surprised that they stop asking for your opinion?

Bart, They're doing you a FAVOR, moron. They're going to pass the bill without you so you can keep your anti-abortion creds and not have to answer for killing health care reform.

And the fact that you voted against health care/insurance reform for the already living won't matter.

It's OK to allow thousands of people to die because they lack health insurance in order to make a big show of opposing something that the legislation doesn't do anyway?
That's an odd sort of morality.

And apparently you'd do it in duplicate. The Senate Bill does NOT allow federal funding for abortion.
He's grandstanding.

Stupak is not standing in opposition to the bill because he believes abortion is murder - Stupak is standing in opposition to the bill because it's many provisions prohibiting the federal funding of abortion do not bear the name "Stupak" on them. And that makes Stupak sad. And if Stupak is sad, then all those poor uninsured people will just have to go without health coverage until the world recognizes the brilliance of Stupak. And only Stupak. Not some other, abortion-funding-prohibition measures that are not Stupak.

This is his own fault. He let the narrative of "The Senate bill allows for federal funding of abortion" gain traction, so if he votes for it then he's voting for abortion. This isn't about what he believes, but about public perception. Unless he's a moron like a good portion of the rest of the American people.
If he had immediately come out and 'endorsed' the abortion language in the Senate bill as 'not as powerful but still acceptable' then he could vote for it. Now it's too late for him to backtrack.
It pisses me off that any congressman, but especially a Democrat, would help kill what has been a decades-long goal of the party - all because it doesn't place *more* restrictions abortion.
If he really feels strongly about the need to further restrict abortion, that's fine. Let him introduce his own legislation independent of this package that would restrict abortion to his liking, find a co-sponsor in the Senate, and let the chambers vote on it separately.
They should lean on his cronies and make it clear they'll be outsiders in the caucus, just like Mr. Stupak. Maybe a few of them will flip.
