Stupak: Still No Agreement

Brian Beutler reports that Rep. Bart Stupak just told reporters on Capitol Hill he is working with the White House on language handling abortion.

"There is no agreement, so until there's agreement I'm a no vote," Stupak (D-MI) said as he walked from the House floor to the office buildings. Earlier today news reports suggested Stupak had flipped to support the bill, but he's saying he's not in.

The negotiations are critical as Stupak still holds a (shrinking) coalition of pro-life Democrats together against the bill. He said he has "pretty close" to 8 members standing with him. Brian asked how important the Catholic bishops are to the process.

"This decision will be determined by members. Not by any group," he said. He would not answer a question about whether there is discussion about making the Hyde amendment banning federal funding for abortions a permanent fixture. "I'm not going there," Stupak said.

Brian asked if Stupak was close to an agreement when he abruptly canceled a press conference yesterday. "One step forward, two back," he said. Brian asked if it has moved forward again. "Half a step--so we're only going back one and three quarter steps," he said.

As Brian has been reporting, abortion remains a major issue standing in the way of the final passage of the bill. Several Democrats told him yesterday that leadership has been discussing the possibility of President Obama issuing an executive order on abortion upon signing the bill.

Today's vote is still not a done deal, but we are being told that leadership is telling members the votes are there.

What's he want?

Cover? The ability to back out of his claims without looking stupid? Or does he actually still thinking he's going to get something of substance here?

What Stupak claims to want is for the government to tell people who've received federal assistance that they can't buy certain kinds of health care plans. That's what his amendment says. That's the distinction with the Nelson / Ellsworth-style text that's in the bill right now. That's the concession he's fought over for months. And from everything I know that's not something Obama could possibly make happen in an EO even if he wanted to. So what are the "negotiations" over? What would the "agreement" be? Is Stupak holding out for Obama to do something unconstitutional?

He said he has "pretty close" to 8 members standing with him.

What does that mean? Either you have eight or you don't. Pretty close to eight could mean him. I can't stand this man. He says he's fighting to be sure that federal dollars aren't spent on abortion. They aren't and won't be. End of story.

I hope his political career is nearly done.

Stupak is still way better than the Republicans, difficult though he seems at this moment. Stupak is clearly willing to sell his vote on HCR, which he supports in its virtual entirety despite his foolish attachment to one extraneous issue. Stupak is acting foolish on this one point although he will likely accept some compromise in the end.

The Republicans are foolish, not acting foolish on one issue. They will not sell their votes at any price. They are relentless in their attachment to their one overriding concern - that the wealthy not be forced to pay any money to aid their poorer fellow citizens even if these fellow citizens forfeit their very lives for the lack of that aid.

Stupak is willing to tax the wealthy to help the poor. He is so far above the Republicans that he seems like a saint in comparison.

Stupak is willing to hold up this bill for his extremist position, built upon lies and misstatements, so he's as bad as the Republicans. Also, since no one else is willing to say this, I will: Medicaire does not provide funding for abortions, so millions of poor women already have to pay for abortions out of their own pockets, and many health plans also now do not provide funding for abortions, so millions of middle-class women must pay out of their own pockets. Stupak wants to change the law to make it almost impossible for any woman who isn't wealthy to get an abortion.

This is an extremist position that matches what the GOP agrees with. Rich Republicans can leave the country and get an abortion whenever they see fit, but the GOP in general has made the political, economic and social conditions for obtaining an abortion in this country so onerous that it's very difficult for many poor and middle-class women. On top of this, they've tried to inculcate young women with ignorance about their bodies, reproductive health, and their rights as citizens.

Now Stupak wants to make things that must difficult. Just terrible, and indefensible.

This man is a pawn of ultra-right wing bishops who are now determined to get their way ever since the Nuns and Catholic hospitals have challenged their nonsense.

Get a primary challenger to this thug and kick him out, I say.

Stupak's kid committed suicide with a family gun. So I feel badly for him and his family being harassed, even though he's being a dope about this issue. HOWEVER, if he doesn't come to his senses, I will absolutely support his opponent in the primary. I probably will anyway, but I'm giving him a mini-absolution.

Just more evidence that if the Dems continue to reach out, the elections won't be the disaster so many are predicting now.

This guy is aware he's a democrat right? You're gonna stop comprehensive healthcare reform because of some debunked fear about federal funding for abortion? Why the fuck is this man even in this party.

Stupak is in!!!!! He sold his vote, God love him! Shame on those who would not sell their votes at any price. And shame on those 178 Lockstep Zombeys who will never sell their votes at any price at any time for any cause no matter how just. At lease the remaining Dems who lined up with the GOP on this issue can be persuaded to sell their votes on another issue on another day. The worst, lowest Dem, Bobby Bright or Gene Taylor or whoever, is a paragon of virtue compared to the best, whatever that can mean with those automatons, Republican.

What does it matter what Stupak said or did before - when the chips were down he voted with us. God bless Bart Stupak! God bless Max Baucus! God bless Ben Nelson! And, yes Virginia, God bless Joe Lieberman.

We're in! And they did the right thing when it counted. The bald fact is that we could not have done it without them. God bless them one and all!
