All 41 Senate Republicans Oppose Financial Reform Bill, Say Will Lead To 'Endless Taxpayer Bailouts'

Every member of the Senate Republican Caucus has signed a letter, delivered to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, expressing opposition to the Democrats' financial regulatory reform bill, which they all claim will lead to more Wall Street bailouts.

"We are united in our opposition to the partisan legislation reported by the Senate Banking Committee," the letter reads. "As currently constructed, this bill allows for endless taxpayer bailouts of Wall Street and establishes new and unlimited regulatory powers that will stifle small businesses and community banks."

As of last night, 40 of the Senate's 41 Republicans had signed the letter. The lone holdout, Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME), said yesterday that she opposed the legislation but hadn't yet decided whether to sign, and it's not clear what convinced her.

Though the letter is unequivocal about the GOP's opposition to the bill, it does not contain an explicit threat to use the Senate rules to block debate on the bill, if Reid tries to bring it to the floor.

But though the letter does not draw that particular bright line, it markedly stiffens the caucus' position. Minority Leader Mitch McConnell made waves Tuesday by blasting the Dems' proposal, claiming it would institutionalize taxpayer funded bailouts of Wall Street. The assertion was widely disputed by both Democrats and experts, and more than 24 hours later, several Republicans were unwilling to endorse McConnell's take. One of them, Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN), even suggested GOP leadership should tone down its rhetoric and try to reach consensus with Democrats.

Now, it seems, they've all decided to endorse that line.

You can read the full letter here.

Ok, now the dems publish a letter pointing out the fact that this letter is blatantly false and another repuke lie, among many lies. Point out in detail how the repukes want to protect too big to fail banks and that the bank bailout was done by the king and his goldman sachs cronies to save goldman sachs from going under.

Detailed factual letter showing how this letter is a lie and have every dem senator sign off on it. No cooperation, then will continue with massive enforcement effort. Double the budget for the sec and the anti-trust division of the justice department and shut these criminals down. Lock em up.

I'm sorry, since when do actual facts matter?

These lies will be repeated until they are accepted as fact.

Unless of course the Media does it's job and call out these blatant lies.

I know, depressing.

Even if the media "did it's job," it wouldn't be enough. People believe this garbage because it fits what they've always held to be true. The Democrats are, in essence, telling them "everything you know is wrong." That's a much harder sell.

The Democrats need to overhaul their messaging completely. Rather than tell people "you're the ones who have it wrong," the Democrats need to tailor their message to fit those pre-existing stereotypes. Americans have certain things they don't like about Republicans too. Tailor your message to fit that.

I'll never forget the way FAUX News cut away from the HIR summit while the President was talking.

"Shining the light" can be very damaging to the FAUX News narrative.

The larger theme the Dems need to press: The GOP does not care about governing. They do not respect elections and will never make any compromises despite being in the minority. Their only goal is ideological purity, and they don't care if US citizens receive better health care or have greater consumer protections or if the financial crisis is repeated. Why vote for a political party that has no interest in governing?

Well, yes, if by "ideological purity" you mean "cut taxes on the rich."

Their only real goal is to regain power so they can resume their symbiotic relationship with the fattest of the cats. If it's necessary to lie, start wars or just ruin the country in order to take back power, that's fine with them.

I don't think you are wrong. That's the evil joke within a joke; the Dems have already caved, and the GOP won't accept victory gracefully.

Dems need to craft a good bill that really addresses the problem of the Bush depression with solid action, without any back room deals. I am sick to death of wimpy, "bipartisan", window-dressing responses to serious problems. It is about time to read the riot act to the Republican wanabees that call themselves Democrats; people like Obama and his Senate DLC cronies.

Actually, I don't think McConnell's letter is accurate. Paul Krugman's column in the NY Times today, http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/16/opinion/16krugman.html?ref=opinion, characterizes Dodd's bill as the equivalent for financial institutions of what the FDIC does for banks. The banks are not "bailed out", they are liquidated -- shareholder equity is wiped out -- and their assets and deposits are taken over by other banks. All of the costs of this are paid from a fund made up of fees paid by all banks.

The letter says that the bill "allows for endless taxpayer bailouts", which is absolutely false.

D's should bring the opening debate issue to a vote and force republicans to filibuster, while offering an amendment to break up the TBTF's. It is quite extraordinary how the Media let the GOP's systematic opposition to any and everything a democrat says stand uncontested and unmocked even when it is advanced in the most flagrant bad faith. It will be interesting to see if the dem's show any spine at all, and actual will to flood the cable shows the way the republicans do, and put the GOP on the defensive for once.

This article should read like this:
“Every member of the Senate Republican Caucus has signed a letter, delivered to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, expressing opposition to the Democrats' financial regulatory reform bill, which they all claim [INCORRECTLY] will lead to more Wall Street bailouts …”

Please add the word “incorrectly” where appropriate. Include background information that elucidates the obvious scam the GOP are trying to pull. The GOP claim is uncontestably a lie and should be regarded as such. Anything less presents the conflict as a legitimate difference of opinion. Something I would expect from the lazy MSM, not TPM.

in a rare moment of actual journalism, CNN actually made a very important distinction about the FinReg plan while they had McConnell bitching about it from a TV screen

they noted that the bailouts that McConnell says will be institutionalized won't actually be funded by taxpayers, but will instead come from a fund which the banks will have to donate to...

so lets get this straight: McConnell is against taxpayer bailouts which aren't part of the bill...check; but ALSO against allowing banks to bail themselves out...which is part of the bill...check; and AT THE SAME TIME he provides no plan to counter the FinReg bill crafted by the dems with help from repubs in congress...check

giant douche
