Mark Critz (D-PA) appeared to narrowly win a special election today to fill the late Rep. John Murtha's seat, a victory the Democrats believe means the fall midterm elections might not be so bad after all. He'll be quickly seated by House leadership once results are finalized.

Critz was leading Republican Tim Burns with 53 percent of the vote to Burns' 45 percent and 70 percent of precincts reporting, and Burns conceded the race around 10:30 p.m. In an unusual twist, both candidates are aiming to be on the November ballot. Critz was on track to prevail in a party primary to be the nominee in the general election, and if Burns' lead for his primary holds steady, these two candidates will be matched up again in November.

The Dem turnout was boosted by a competitive Senate primary between Sen. Arlen Specter and Rep. Joe Sestak, one reason the majority party had been sounding quite confident about the race for several days. Critz was fueled as well by labor activists and Democratic volunteers who made calls and knocked on doors for weeks to help keep the seat. Former President Bill Clinton stumped for Critz over the weekend.

Although, RNC Chairman Michael Steele was once talking a pretty big game on the race as well, telling the Washington Post last week "We're going to win."

Democrats believe this is a bellwether district since it voted narrowly for John Kerry in 2004 (51%-49%) but for Sen. John McCain over Barack Obama in 2008 by by less than one percentage point. Al Gore handily won the district in 2000.

You neednt hold your breath long, on 'Morning Jo(k)e" the spin was that PA-12 was a referendum on Obama as Critz ran hard against everything Obama. Scarborough talks, as usual, out of his ass and mouth as everything according to him, and who he enables on the show, is a referendum on DC and Obama. But if it had been a GOP victory he would have lauded the fact that 'politics is local' and as so went PA-12 for McCain in '08. so it went again. You cant win with the MSM ever, or the pricks on it. And MSNBC sent Shuster to the locker room and kept Buchanan???

They forget the fact that John Kerry won this district as well when he ran for prez. This is Murtha's seat, and had he lived he would be on track to win it again as well.

That's true. I dont know what margin Kerry had over Bush in PA-12 in '04. I was living 40 miles west of Philly then near Allentown, first time voting in PA and the exit polling sort of blew my mind in how aggressive they were.

Not so fast on counting your November chickens. Critz did not run as a liberal. Critz ran as a conservative Democrat. His ads portrayed him as a pro-life, pro-2nd Amendment, anti-cap & trade candidate, and as one who would have voted against Obamacare. We will see if he VOTES as a conservative Democrat (in which case you and libs here will be all over him) or Critz will be exposed as just another dishonest Democrat in conservative clothing (for purposes of getting elected in a "moderate" district).

Note that the article pointed out that Dem turnout was increased due to the Spector Sestak race. Maybe Critz will win again in November, but he may have to contend with higher GOP turnout and at least a short voting record after having his arms twisted and legs broken by Nancy Pelosi.

Also, it should be noted that Obama is 0-4 in big endorsements/campaign appearances: Deeds, Corzine, Coakley, and Spector. Obama needs to do MORE campaign appearances this fall!

So much for the demise of the Democratic party.

It's still a big tent party, unlike the ideologically pure, goose-steppin' apparition the GOP has become.

Lets celebrate that a Democrat won in PA-12 AND in the PA Senate Primary.

Specter shouldn't feel so bad, however. He did far better in the Democratic primary than he would have done in the GOP teabaggin' primary. Those pitchfork wielding blowhards wouldn't have given him 10% of the vote.

R's kicking up as much dust as they exit as they can. These two will face off again in Nov 2010.

JOHNSTOWN, PA — Republicans today accused Democrat congressional candidate Mark Critz of “illegally campaigning” inside Cambria County polling places. The Pennsylvania Republican Party and the campaign of Tim Burns, Critz’s GOP opponent in the 12th Congressional District, said Critz was witnessed inside polls in Westmont.

Critz’s campaign did not deny that he had been inside some polls but maintained that nothing improper or illegal occurred.

“Mark did no electioneering within polling locations,” Critz spokeswoman Holly Shulman said. “These are nothing more than desperate attacks which we’ve seen from Tim Burns throughout this campaign.” The Burns campaign circulated a photo purportedly showing Critz inside a polling place in Westmont.

And the state GOP committee quoted a section of the Pennsylvania Election Code saying “no person, when within the polling place, shall electioneer or solicit votes for any political party, political body or candidate.”

“Get out of the polls, Mark!” Republican Party spokesman Mike Barley said in a statement issued to reporters. “Your presence breaks the law, intimidates voters and election workers and could influence the outcome of this election.”

The Burns campaign questioned whether Critz had a “poll watcher certificate” that would have allowed him inside the voting place. Critz’s campaign did not say whether the candidate had such a certificate.

Sally Winder, judge of elections in the Westmont No. 5 precinct, said Critz entered the polling place, shook the hands of a few poll workers, and was told he had to leave. He complied, she said.

Fred R. Smith, Cambria County election supervisor, said Critz should have been asked to leave the precinct.

Although Smith reported receiving one phone call from a man who was "out of control" over Critz allegedly being in a Westmont precinct, he had not received any complaints that Critz improperly campaigned inside the precinct or interfered with anyone who was voting or waiting to vote.

A person could lodge a formal complaint with the county board of elections. Smith said he was unsure what, if anything, would be done about such a complaint.

i wouldn't celebrate too much. this guy's a democrat, but he's hardly liberal. he said he would have voted against health care reform and that he'd vote against cap and trade. he's also pro-life and holds a number of other conservative positions. that's pretty typical of this district though. it's the kind of rural area that's dominated by Democrats left over from the steel mill and mining days. they still support Dems out of loyalty to the unions and the regions' history of Democratic votes, but they're overwhelmingly conservative on most issues, especially social. an area like Johnstown which is one of the hubs of this district is anything but progressive, even if it's overwhelmingly in the hands of Democrats.

8% when there were less than 100k votes in the entire election. That's a BIG win. And this is just a special election. One thing about the Repubs, when they feel they are losing, they don't even bother to vote.

They would rather do absentee ballots and 'pretend' they didn't vote for the loser. Which is fine, because there will be a HUGE Democratic turn out for the November elections.

And the Repubs and Tea Party psychos will end up splitting their votes on no win candidates based on extremist ideology.

Didn't they learn anything from the Brits?

I think some here are missing the point (perhaps wilfully). This is precisely the kind of district the Republicans must take back from the Dems to win control of the House. These are precisely the kind of voters that were supposed to have become alienated by "Obama's radical socialist agenda" (not to mention his color). Conditions are more favorable for Republicans now than they're likely to be in November. And still their hand-picked candidate got rolled.

If they couldn't beat Critz how ae they going to beat folks like Altmire? Boccieri? Holden? Lipinski? Spence? Skelton? Arcuri? They'll win back some seats in the south which flipped during the past two "wave" elections, but there aren't enough seats there to win back a majority.

This doesn't even touch on the opening Kentucky gave us by nominating Paul. The Dems cose the stronger and more progressiv of the two potential Dems, Conway, to oppose him. As did Pennsylvania (in an "outsider" election, Sestak will be far stronger against Toomey). And Halter looks positioned to knock off Lincoln in the runoff, giving Dems an outside shot at holding that seat (Blanche has none).

I'm feeling better about November tonight than I have in months.

As progressives i think we have learnt our lessons well. Just ignore the national media hype, steel our spines and work like crazy to push our agenda forward. Unlike the teabaggers we do not believe in our own propaganda, we aren't feted by the cable commentariat nor do we want to be, and we are proud to stand on solid ground in being for something instead of railing against everything (which is easy).

I've just read the comments over at RedState to see how the loons are reacting to this upset. It's amazing, they had one sane guy who called this out for what it is: an epic failure of the conservative movement, urged his comrades to wake up and stop being complacent, but what did he get? A flick of the hand, surely he was overreacting; the Dem was to win this all along. He became nearly apoplectic that no one sensed the urgency and was angry at having been asked to send a cheque to Burns, then had to backtrack and apologize when some big gun there insinuated that he was casting 'aspersions on my character'. I almost felt for the guy, but hey, why step in when your enemies are destroying themselves.

IMO, this was the most important race of the night; by far.

If nothing else, it will give the national media cause for pause on calling 2010 a wave election for the Republicans.

It still might turn out to be that, but.............

......PA-12 is a solid reminder; all politics is local.

Trying to Nationalize a local election, like the Republicans tried to do in this one, is a VERY risky proposition.

Here's the media-friendly teabagger version of a "great night":

Jump up and down that Rand Paul won, and ignore the fact that in Kentucky last night, the numbers were: Republicans 330,000 total votes, Democrats 448,000

State in news articles that Democrat squeaked out a special election victory over the Republican in Murtha's district (a bellweather district for Republican turnaround hopefuls) - when it was a solid 8 point victory in a district Steele was counting on, where they spend a lot of money, where insurance reform was supposed to be so unpopular, and where the right wing was supposed to be so "motivated."

I predict another huge night like this for the teabaggers on the second Tuesday this November. Gosh, I hope Rand Paul has never said anything stupid or silly that the Dem can beat up on him with.
