In campaigns -- like in pro-wrestling -- timing is everything. And Linda McMahon (R), last seen running way behind in the Connecticut Senate race, is proving she's a master of when to say just the right thing.
Fresh off news of the cataclysmic oil spill in the gulf of Mexico, McMahon recently distributed a mailer where she promised to put 'Connecticut back to work' by calling on the government to "increase offshore drilling and production."
Ted Mann of The Day has the picture, which is worth at least a thousand barrels of spilled crude.
McMahon says it's time to loosen the "burdensome regulations" that can "inhibit growth."
Drilling for oil near sensitive coastline ecosystems is a win-win, the McMahon in the mailer. "Offshore oil drilling will create jobs and increase energy supply without cost to the taxpayer," it reads.
This isn't the first time McMahon has had to deal a, perhaps, poor choice of imagery. Shortly after she announced she was running for Chris Dodd's seat in the Senate last October, Democrats called on her to explain some old footage from her days at World Wrestling Entertainment -- which they said suggested McMahon was making money from necrophilia.
Nor is it the first time her timing has been questioned. As Republicans continued to beat the drums about ACORN and it's alleged corrupt voter registration practices, McMahon's campaign was forced to cancel a program it had planned to increase the voter rolls by paying canvassers $5 for every Republican they registered.

As an added bonus, people can be put to work cleaning up oil spills! Genius at work.

She is running in a Republican primary. Do you think any of the freaks voting in that primary are worried about harm to the environment? They LOVE harm to the environment. A giant oil spill kills things and bothers liberals at the same time! That alone makes offshore drilling quite appealing to a crazy person of the Republican variety. And that's in addition to the fact that more oil means more gasoline for more driving in one's big truck or SUV.

Oil drilling platformns are so much better looking than wind farms plus wind spills could huff and puff and blow whole cities down.

Brilliant!
Plus, think of all the photos right-wingers will inflict on us, showing the poor fish and turtles all covered in wind!

John Kerry and Joe Lieberman had the same "D'Oh" moment with their climate bill. They just hid it better---no glossy picture of an offshore oil rig.
Their bill also calls for increased offshore drilling. Fortunately for them, when the Gulf disaster happened they were able to delay the bill's release and "retune" it to tone down the language, and insert a provision giving states some ability to protest drilling off their particular shores.
I received a letter from my Senator, Barbara Mikulski, announcing her support for the Kerry/Lieberman climate bill. Regarding the offshore drilling provisions, she wrote:
From that weaselly language, it is hard to realize that she is supporting a bill that in fact promotes increased offshore drilling.

That's the equivalent of throwing the environment out of the ring, then smashing it over the head with a metal chair. And if you dare to boo, then you get body slammed by Mrs. McMahon herself.
