The campaign of Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) has a new Web video making fun of former Rep. J.D. Hayworth (R-AZ), who is challenging McCain in the Republican primary, over Hayworth's mistaken insistence last week that the United States never formally declared war on Nazi Germany during World War II.

The YouTube video is fashioned in the style of a stereotypical 1940s newsreel, with a melodramatic announcer and archived news footage and audio from the process of that very declaration of war with Germany. The footage is cut in with Hayworth's statement that the war was not declared.

"J.D. Hayworth," the announcer says. "Is it any wonder he was voted among the dumbest members of Congress?"

The TPM Poll Average gives McCain a lead in this primary of 51.2%-37.1%.

I had to laugh at how they skewered Hayworth. He was like a speared frog on the end of a stick. And he looks like a extra on the Geico Caveman campaigns...that does help much.
McCain's demerits and lack of bearing at the Academy meant nothing as he was a legacy and whatever pile of shit he stepped in, he knew someone would scrape his shoes clean; daddy.

You mean a candidate was given preferential treatment in admissions and proceeded to perform miserably when actually challenged to do the work at the school?

This is an outrage.

Oh, wait...it's McCain who got preferential treatment? Well, he's white. In that case, it's no big deal.

Instead, let's discuss how Barack Obama managed to outperform 90% of his law school class and earn his degree magna cum laude. It must be affirmative action. He couldn't possibly have honestly done better than whites. I demand his transcript!

---Don't laugh; this is how Republicans actually think.

E,
Youre preaching to the choir here. The fact that he burned in 3 planes should have been a automatic lateral transfer to Supply Corps or Civil Engineering, speaks volumes that he was allowed to be a combat aviator after his low level accomplishments at USNA (IHTFP).
There were plenty of people there who by the grace of connections werent arrested for any number of pecadilloes...

Did anyone else have a flashback to 2008 when watching this? How many outlandish attacking "web ads" did the (cash strapped) McCain camp release? It seemed like their strategy was to release these on the web, create a stir, and let the 24hr news channels run them all day for free.

I guess it worked so well in '08...

Really. It's not like AZ repubs have a good bead on history in the first place. If they did, they never would have nominated McCain in the first place so many eons ago.

It certainly doesn't stop you from having a political career in Arizona. But even with the hate for McCain the Repubs know the fastest way to end up with a Dem Senator is to vote for JD in the primaries.

Wow, McCain will be painted as a liberal as a result of this ad. Big mistake, the whole movement is based on ignoring relevant fact and doubling down of factual inaccuracies. Typical conservative response to something like this: "Goddamn liberal media making things up, that's why FOX news is number one! You goddamn liberals think you're so smart....YOU THINK YOU KNOW EVERYTHING!"

This is the know nothing party after all. I just don't see how this helps with AZ voters.

I think I know how to decide who, among smart people is the smartest; but deciding who is dumber -- John McCain [the fundamentals of our economy is strong] -- (I mean, that was a year and a half ago and required a knowledge that most serving senators should have!) -- and Hayworth's ignorance of history (which 2 minutes on Google would have taken care of).

Who is dumber? They are both dumb! Who is more dangerous? Considering McCain's seniority, his ignorance is more dangerous. Hayworth has no power base; no fake "creds" as McCain has.

And also, Hayworth didn't inflict Sarah on our country.

I actually think this could backfire on McCain.

It's that curious reaction that low information voters have when they find themselves being properly shamed. They rally around "the stupid" and defend it, because... they have to. Saying stupid things is something that happens to them all the time. Eventually, these people develop a denial system, like an alcoholic, and they just create their own reality.

(hence: Fox News)

How else can you explain Sheriff Joe Arpaio, or that "papers please" law?

Just because Hayworth actually looks like Howdy Doody (wooden dimples) and says dumb things doesn't mean people in Arizona won't love him. I think the show was very popular there, at that time, and as long as the kids in AZ are laughing at his jokes, and McCain is pontificating from his elitist castle in the land of "facts"...

Yes, I think it's just possible that McCain might have finally found his "bridge too far" (if you will forgive my referencing more obscure American military history that is sure to confuse the TeaParty™ faithful).

JD needs to give up now, the more he opens his mouth, the more he brings down the Republican party. The once named dumbest member in Congress, continues to express himself and communicate to the voters of Arizona that he is just not capable of the position as a Senator. JD is not just dumb, he is unethical and a blowhard. At this point, JD has completely made a fool of himself and I am even starting to feel sorry for him.
