Nevada's GOP First Lady To TPM: I'm Backing Harry Reid Over Sharron Angle

Nevada First Lady Dawn Gibbons, a Republican and soon-to-be-ex-wife of recently defeated Gov. Jim Gibbons, said in an interview she is supporting Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's reelection bid because he is the better candidate on the economy. But she thinks Reid (D-NV) has quite a fight on his hands this fall.

Gibbons, a former state assembly member, has been up close and personal with Reid's Republican rival, Sharron Angle. They served together in the state legislature and were even opponents in a three-way GOP primary for the state's 2nd Congressional district seat in 2006.

"There's no question Sharron Angle is one of the toughest grassroots campaigners I've ever seen," Gibbons told TPM in a phone interview.

Gibbons' recollection is that Angle is a tough campaigner but thinks most of the political dirty work in that race was done on Angle's behalf by outside groups such as the conservative Club for Growth. "She did not get mean and nasty but she had people that did," Gibbons said.

That's one reason why Angle skyrocketed to the nomination on Tuesday -- the Club for Growth spent big for her candidacy and she also was boosted by the Tea Party Express. But Gibbons also credited Angle's campaign skills. "She's a very good grassroots candidate, she appeals to the conservative base of the Republican Party," Gibbons said. "She gave those people a reason to get out and vote."

Gibbons said it isn't fair that she was hit by Angle and the Club for Growth as a tax increaser during the 2006 primary. The legislature had to pass a tax to pay for the budget, she said. Gibbons said she voted for the tax but against the additional spending, and Angle did the opposite to keep her tax record clean.

"She's a nice person don't get me wrong, but she was one of the people that voted 'No' the most times, even a lot of times you have to stretch and wonder why did she vote 'No,'" Gibbons said.

In 2006, Angle at first pushed for a recount after losing to Dean Heller by fewer than 500 votes. She fought in court to have a new election, but ultimately conceded after a judge disagreed a few weeks later. Gibbons came in third place.

Gibbons has her own theory about why one time frontrunner Sue Lowden's campaign deflated Tuesday. When Lowden was chairman of the Nevada Republicans, she prevented then-presidential candidate Ron Paul from speaking at the state convention. Libertarians have been mad at her ever since. "Those Ron Paul people were upset with her. That came out in the election because those are the people that remembered and this was their time to get even," Gibbons said.

As for Reid, Gibbons said she considers him to be "effective" for Nevada and the economy. She said she endorsed him last fall and is "very passionate" about his reelection.

She said Reid is responsible for stopping the dumping of nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain in rural Nevada. "That's a blessing for all our children. We don't want our children to light up at night, thank you very much," she said.

On a trip to Washington in 1997 with her husband on official business, she noticed people were being extra nice because they were from Reid's home state of Nevada. "We got better treatment when we were in Washington, and that's kind of nice," Gibbons said.

Gibbons, who now hosts a Nevada radio show, declined to weigh in on the disgraced governor, who lost in the Republican primary Tuesday. She said she won't be taking sides in the governor's race, which will pit Reid's son Rory Reid (D) against Brian Sandoval (R).

Gibbons filed for divorce in May 2008 following sexual harassment claims. Here's the most detailed article out there on their relationship.

Everything myself and husband have been
saying about Dawn, this article just
confirmed.

She is intelligent, has both heart and
conscience and was far too good a person
to have been married to the TRASH HEAP
known as Jim Gibbons, for years.

We can hardly wait for the trial (lawsuit
filed by Chrissy Mazzeo whom Jim Gibbons
tried to rape, just before the election in
06) wherein Dawn will be called to testify,
under OATH ~ about what sort of sleazeball
her former husband is and has always been.

He tried to bar HER from the governor's mansion
right after they had moved in! She surely is
getting the last laugh on him (not that NV
voters haven't already done that).

Indeed, the Yucca Mountain (which dumbnuts Shrub administration pushedhed HARD to get funding
increased for during their entire time in D.C. = the "up
'down the rabbit hole' crowd of LOSERS including
Spencer Abraham, Mr. "popeyes") project

WAS de-funded through efforts by HARRY REID; there
are a few posters (not many, to TPM's credit) on
here who really need to be in a straight jacket.
They are the original 'know nothings' ... showing
ignorance x 1,000,000 talking about people they
never met and are not fit to shine the shoes of
(like our President, OR Senator Reid).

Guess they have nothing better to do at the
asylum ... finished up their basket weaving
early. IVY

IMO, the pivotal role Reid played in the Yucca fight was truly impressive. He had plenty of help, but he really earned my respect as pretty much the consistent driving force leading the fight.

C'mon, the guy is comedy. He's like that white guy I saw in Barnes & Noble yesterday, who was talking and chuckling to himself, and when a book by Jimmy Carter caught his eye, he started muttering about how brother Billy was a real regular guy while Jimmy was nothing but a flake. He sensed my presence and looked at me with a semi-dazed look, and I just gave him a bemused smile. You're not going to win an argument with members of the too-cuckoo-for-cocoa-puffs crowd.

So, consider the source, roll your eyes, smile bemusedly like you would at someone who's walking around oblivous to the toilet paper stuck to the sole of his shoe, and move on.

Who are these "Obama donors" that would not be pleased? I am an Obama donor--$4600--and would LOVE single payer. The Unions were Obama donors. They would love single payer.

Just who are these donors you are so sure wouldn't want single payer?

May I remind you that a CEO of a big corporation could only donate $4600, just like you and me?

Donors didn't keep Obama from pushing for single payer. REALITY did! There were probably 30 votes in the House and 10 in the Senate for single payer.

But keep tilting at those windmills and keep calling the president a traitor when he goes after what's possible.

The only way would could get a single-payer system is if the current health care system fails on a collasal level, which really is a shame because it's still on the verge of doing so.

$4600? LMAO. *If* you play your cards right, that *might* get you a grip-and-grin and a nice photo. But not if you were dumb enough to do it in $50 increments online.

Ever hear of "bundlers"?

Bundlers are people with friends in high places who, after bumping against personal contribution limits, turn to those friends, associates, and, well, anyone who's willing to give, and deliver the checks to the candidate in one big "bundle."

Even though these donors direct more money to the candidates than anyone else, disclosure can be spotty, with Obama and McCain posting bundlers by ranges, indicated in this chart with the "max" and "min" columns, and with the top ranges being simply "$500,000 or more." Together, 536 elites have directed at least $75,750,000 to McCain, and 560 have gathered at least $76,500,000 for Obama.

While John McCain's campaign posts bundlers' employers and occupations, Barack Obama's campaign does not. The employers displayed for Obama's bundlers are based on CRP research.

These guys averaged $1,366,070 apiece, Kind of makes your $4600 look like peanuts, no? And that doesn't count outside groups that produced independent ads, mailers, etc. on his behalf.

Small donors gave him a lot of cash. And despite GOP propaganda claiming different, made up the bulk of his fund raising (after he was an established candidate, of course). What it didn't do was give us direct policy access. That costs extra, apparently even with Obama.

Funny thing. I don't think single payer was the right move immediately, not in the current job economy. But advocates here did ultimately convince me it was a better long term approach. I really liked Obama's plan from the primaries. I was shocked he didn't even bring it to the table before gutting it.

You said "donors", asswipe! LOL.

Those bundlers raised money for the president but could not DONATE more than $4600. Bruce Springsteen, Oprah, John Legend, Tom Hanks, Stephen Speilberg and ME all gave the same amount.

You still have not been able to list one DONOR who was dead set against single payer.

You have not offered a shred of evidence that Obama did not pursue single payer because of his donors.

As always, you can never back-up your baseless allegations. It's so predictable.

But why take it off the table from the start. He could have used it as a starting point to eventually arrive at a decent public option, etc, instead of the RomneyCare that it became. Contrary to the popular view that he's a "3-dimensional chess master" there are times when his negotiation skills are puerile-to-naive.

It took a year to get HCR through. By that time, almost everybody was sick to death of HCR and even democrats were saying we should move on.

But YOU think we should have wasted 4-6 months arguing over single payer which would have accomplished two things: validated the talking point of "a government take-over of healthcare" and made the negotiations go on for 18-24 months. You actually think that's a good use of time? I don't.

Here's the reality: the vast majority of Americans have health insurance. The vast majority of them are satisfied with their insurance because they've never really needed it or been screwed by their insurer.

If Obama told those people "no more private insurance. You will be forced into a government-run system", the outrage would have made the Iranian demonstrations look like a walk in the park. Even many people who wanted HCR did not want to be forced into government run insurance.

I believe in single payer but the vast majority of the country have to be convinced that it's workable before they will go along with it.

Hello Chameleon ... this is IVY (wife of Jung at

until after July 4th, bless his overworked
heart and brain.

He had asked you in your previous chats, "how to"
create a personal avatar. I'm thinking you didn't
see the post, being someone very brilliant (you're
welcome!) and sharing, who WOULD have answered.
Clicking on your 'birth certificate' avatar also
only gave him the "not found" screen (???)

That 'cartoon guy' is a big bunch of snorts and
giggles, isn't he? You surely summed him up
(like surgery done with a LASER beam) however
with two words:

Bitter much?

I'D like to add: Psychotic much? Maybe he
needs to look Ms. Angle up and ask to borrow
some of her Haldol Rx !

Josh ought to TOSS these fools, what do they
contribute to the public discourse?

ONLY on here to show their stupidity and STEAL
bandwidth ... clearly.

As another poster stated, TPM is not a
"public square". Those who pee in the punch
or knock things over get escorted OUTSIDE
(and not with gentility or by Tinker Bell!)

Dawn Gibbons has had a renaissance in her
life, wouldn't surprise me if she has
already found that "30 something personal
trainer" someone in the thread below mentions.
Who could blame her, after living with that
pile of DUNG, Jim Gibbons?

Hi Ivy - nice to meet you. You must be sensational as you have a pretty terrific husband. I must have missed that post. As far as creating your personal avatar. Just find something you think you would like and save it (I use a Mac) to your desktop of whereever you save it on a PC. Then go to your Profile and it will walk your through it. It's quite simple because if I can do it anyone can.

So Jung is on a special assignment or just too busy? Well, I hope you will take his place in the meantime. We need all the smart people we can get in here because sometimes it gets taken over by the crazies and the trolls.

Now I am not quite sure why that happened when he clicked on my avatar but TPM has gone through some major changes in the last month and not for the better, I must say. I think it is the facebook hookup that is causing the problems. But in order to create your own avatar, just go to your profile and then follow the instructions, Usually when you click on someone's avatar it takes you to their page and if they've created a profile you usually can see what they have to say about themselves. s

Thank you for the compliment. I get called a stupid idiot all day long by the trolls so it's a good thing I have a thick skin.

Thanks for checking in. You made my day and say hello to JungatHeart and tell him not to work too hard and be sure to come back and check in.

Let me know if I can help you with uploading your avatar and if push comes to shove you can always contact the folks at tpm - they will help you.

Have a great weekend

I heard some school children walking by my
office today, using the expressions:

OMG (Oh my god) and FREAKTARD

Never thought this NV Physician would have
a chance to use those ... and ALL in one
post!

OMG! That is the SADDEST thing I ever read
(since Princess Diana expired, anyway) = the
best YOU can do

TO try and 'sling mud' at Harry Reid is to
come up with a "nickname" used in the MOVIE,
'Casino' ?????

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA

You aren't the only one who watches films,
juvenile person.

Mr. Cleanface? TRUTH IS, that was given to
Reid as a COMPLIMENT.

You suggest he was 'in the pocket' of the MOB?
So why in Hades did they

TRY TO BLOW UP HIS (family!) car, twice?

Here is the reality, taken from a newspaper article.
Comparing him to John INSANE (who will NOT be found
innocent, after thorough 'up his rectum' investigation
by FBI and other 'three letter' Fed Agencies) is

Very ... FREAKTARDED ! Not much light there in your
cave, is that it? Have no new VCR tapes since Casino
came out over a decade ago? (Nyuk Nyuk) Very Amused
IVY L.

ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

In Casino, Robert DeNiro's character melts down in front of the Nevada Gaming Commission after the commission denies him a license to operate a casino. The scene is loosely based on a December 1978 hearing when Reid was the commission's chairman, and some of the dialogue spoken by Smothers is taken directly from Reid's words during the hearing. (The rest of the scenes involving Smothers, who plays a composite politician known only as "Senator," have nothing to do with Reid.) OK, it's lackluster Scorsese, but at least it's not Gangs of New York. And there are other Reid echoes in Casino: Joe Pesci's character refers to a "Mr. Cleanface," which gangster Joe Agosto said was his nickname for Reid, but a five-month investigation of Agosto's claims cleared Reid of wrongdoing.

I think she's dead right on why Lowden lost though. The Ron Paul/Libertarian faction HATES her. I was hoping it wouldn't manifest until during the election.

I think we're going to see a lot of the Nevada power structure on the GOP side either support Reid or quietly sit out. Going from having the majority leader seat to the most junior senator plus Ensign would be insane. Especially if McCain survives his primary.

Uh oh, looks like he's on to us. We have no choice but to accelerate our secret plan to expropriate the means of production, liquidate the capitalist class and live in a glorious socialist utopia. It's inevitable, you know.

Oh, wait, the capitalists packed the means of production up and sent them off to Communist China. Crap, that really throws a monkey wrench into the whole thing. If we have the Revolution now, we won't have anything to do after it's over except give each other haircuts and serve free hamburgers at the local McMarxalds. Foiled again!

Not that anybody cares at this point in the comments, but Mrs. Gibbons is wrong. Lowden actually did invite Paul to speak at the convention - verified it with YouTube before I posted here - but incurred the wrath of his supporters when she shut the convention down (literally stealing the ballot boxes) before actually allowing him to win delegates.

As for the rest - that's fine. Part of the mission of the conservative wave is to send the neocon war mongers back to the left where they belong. Good riddance!

" Gibbons has her own theory about why one time frontrunner Sue Lowden's campaign deflated Tuesday. When Lowden was chairman of the Nevada Republicans, she prevented then-presidential candidate Ron Paul from speaking at the state convention. Libertarians have been mad at her ever since. "

Well, no, Ron DID speak at the convention, got a standing ovation and the delegates proceeded to elect Ron Paul delegates overwhelmingly to the national convention. The state GOP Lowden chaired then fled the convention to shut it down, not having the votes to recess it, and appointed state delegates by conference call. Recall, that Ron Paul came in second in the primary in Nevada, ahead of McCain, and by the time of the state convention, Romney had dropped out.

Lowden's GOP willfully threw out the entire primary process for the State GOP of Nevada. It wasn't even just Ron Paul supporters who were upset about this (in fact Ron Paul delegates couldn't have been elected were the Romney delegates not also voting for them).

Reid is GONE!

"Sharron Angle, following her come-from-behind Republican Primary win Tuesday, has bounced to an 11-point lead over Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid in Nevada’s closely-watched U.S. Senate race.

A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Likely Voters in Nevada, taken Wednesday night, shows Angle earning 50% support while Reid picks up 39% of the vote. Five percent (5%) like some other candidate, and six percent (6%) are undecided.

We'd better make plenty more room in the Big Tent Party for all the refugees fleeing from the SS GOP now that it's been taken over by blood-thirsty illiterate pirates. Senator-Elect Charley Crist (D-FL) is setting a good example, especially now that he's vetoed the GOP anti-abortion abortion of a bill. Charley seems to be a new man now that he's out of the Republican straitjacket, headin' left as fast as Arlen did once he decided he'd had enough of the Tea Party asylum.

It's a real shame that Bob Inglis didn't see the light and jump ship to the Democrats once he saw he was too reasonable and well-mannered to maintain support in the Mad Hatter's Tea Party trailer park lynch mob. We could have used him; he would have been like a Gene Taylor or a Bobby Bright, both of whom I am happy to have with us by the way, but maybe with more capacity for leadership and principle.

I would be glad to welcome Senator Bob Bennett on board the Good Ship Common Sense as well. Now that there is one sane party and one insane party, we'll need a lot more folding chairs for the new arrivals.

"We'd better make plenty more room in the Big Tent Party for all the refugees fleeing from the SS GOP"

Funny, the polls say the Indies are leaving O'Dumba and the Dimtartds in droves. Who are these refugees? The Tea Party candidates just won 4 races!

The polls say that the Tea Party is increasing it's members or supporters in the double digits last month

The GOP is taking on some serious competition from within the party to remove the RHINOS and get back to giving the voters more of an option when they vote instead of la la liberal land Unicorns and Rainbows.

btw, Ras has the most accurate polls proven in elections nationwide. get wise
