Rep. Parker Griffith (R-AL), who switched from the Democratic Party in December 2009, has been defeated in his Republican primary by Madison County Commissioner Mo Brooks. Griffith is now the second party-switcher to lose his new party's primary this year, following Pennsylvania's Republican-turned-Democratic Senator Arlen Specter.
Griffith has conceded the race. With 99% of precincts reporting, Brooks has 51% of the vote -- just above the 50% needed to win without a runoff -- with Griffith at 33% and businessman Les Phillip with 16%. Griffith was elected to a Democratic-held open seat in 2008, winning a 51%-49% race in a district that John McCain carried 61%-38%. He switched parties in 2009, citing the health care bill and Democratic spending as major reasons for his decision, after having already voted against such big-ticket Democratic items as the stimulus, cap-and-trade and health care.
Although Griffith was welcomed with open arms into the Republican caucus, his Republican opponents did not back out -- Brooks and Phillip had already been running to take on the Democrat Griffith. And Republican primary voters have agreed with their decision. Brooks, who had the endorsement of local Tea Party activists and Griffith's 2008 opponent, Wayne Parker, was able to dislodge the incumbent pretty easily.
Brooks very clearly harnessed the same distrust of an incumbent party-switcher that Joe Sestak seized on in Pennsylvania against Arlen Specter. Check out this ad that Brooks ran, in which Wayne Parker declared: "It's time for a Congressman we can trust."

When I sucked it up and took the Republican ballot today, it was so that I could be a part of this. Yes we did!

Wait, I'm confused. I'm guessing you voted for Brooks--who I assume to be the more conservative/teabagger candidate in hopes that he would be too extreme to win the general election?
You do realize you live in Alabama, right?

That. Mo Brooks is out there but at least he's authentic. I plan to support Raby in the general. But you're correct, Brooks could win in the general. (North Alabama is generally the least backward part of the state, though.)
I don't see a lot of practical difference between him and Griffith, tbh.

He should have read his Machiavelli. You can quit the game, but you can't switch sides. Do that, and no one ever trusts you again.
One of Reagan's best lines was, "I didn't leave my party; my party left me." Neat, huh? Shifted the betrayal off of himself and on to the Democrats. That's like a figure skater throwing a quadruple-axle with a couple of somersaults thrown in.

Democrats had a another good election night and the msm ignores it. The black congressman in Alabama that voted against obamas healthcare plan lost to a white candidate that was endorsed by all the major black political groups in Alabama.

this was all about Griffith the person. he was a selfish power-grubbing ass. everything else (buying his way into the Dem Party, being convinced by DC GOP operators to switch, & etc) flowed from that. the electorate finally revolted against a revolting individual, that's all.
given Brooks power-base is highly localized, he's a life-long politican, is intellectually inflexable, a Mormon (thus not well-accepted among SBC power-brokers) & the nature of the 5th District... don't be suprised if a Southern-populist style Dem beats him.

While it's tempting to look for tea party implications and try to nationalize this race, the overwhelming reason Griffith lost is because, as another commenter pointed out, he's just sort of smarmy and untrustworthy and power hungry. I do believe that a reasonable person can make a thoughtful, rationale decision to switch or leave parties - but it was just so clear that Griffith didn't do this. Rather, he made a kneejerk, politically motivated decision to flee what he thought was a sinking ship. The attitude of most Republicans I know in his district was "once a cheater, always a cheater" - and I think they were absolutely right.

Okay I'm going to be the grammar police for a moment, in the article and a few of the comments the term "Democrat" was used, this is a pejorative and incorrect label. It is Democratic. Thank you I shall leave now.

As an Alabamian, to say that it is no surprise they went for the teabagger is really quite silly of you. It also shows that you really don't get the district. We don't have open primaries in Alabama, and Parker Griffith was never a true Democrat to begin with. Oh, he skated by posing as one in the state legislature briefly before making his run to take Bud's House seat, but his feet were never held to the fire. When he feared that the backlash against health care reform was going to make him being a Democrat and holding onto that seat untenable, he bolted since being in DC was more important than anything else. This was truly about Parker Griffith personally and him showing, by his own actions, that he doesn't really stand for anything other than getting re-elected.
Democratic candidate Steve Raby may have the connections to the past to catapult his way into Congress as he was Howell Heflin's- or as we still lovingly refer to him as Howell the Jowl- chief of staff for 13 years. He certainly has more political experience than a county commissioner, but that doesn't usually mean much in Red States. There are some really cooky fools in the rest of the district that spend too much time listening to talk radio and Fox News.
